I’m Incredibly frustrated

Alesis Q88 MIDI doesn't work with Volca Keys or Bass

Hey, so I'm using Ableton 9 as my DAW, but this is not the issue. Ableton sees everything MIDI from the USB side of the controller (send and receive lights illuminate upon controller press) but when I plug the 5 pin MIDI cable into the Volca Keys, it does not seem to register in any way whatsoever (the Key's ribbon controller still works fine). I have tried powering the controller with BOTH USB and 9 volt and connecting the MIDI connector to the Keys' MIDI input through the q88's MIDI output. Both the MIDI in and out of the Alesis Q88 and Volca Keys are set to MIDI input 1 and same with the DAW. I have reset the keyboard and also have the exact same preferences as ALL of the other functioning MIDI controllers. My Carbon 49 has zero issues with compatibility and plug and plays immediately with the Volca Keys with only USB power and MIDI connected. Unfortunately, the Q88 works with zero of my MIDI capable hardware so I'm not sure if this is a user error or a faulty MIDI port?

  • Hi Matt,

I'm sorry you're having problems with your Q88.

It sounds like your product may need to be serviced. Warranty and non-warranty claims are not handled here on the forum but I can point you in the right direction. Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

    • Submit a Warranty or Service inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the Alesis Support Page. Select Warranty or Service Inquiry from the drop down menu.

    or

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  • I know this is an old thread, but I'm having the same problem with a brand new Q88 and a Volca FM. The Q88 works fine with virtual instruments via USB in a DAW, and it works fine via the MIDI out port when plugged into my Novation Mininova, but I can't get it to work with the Volca. I can also use the Mininova to control the Volca FM, so I know that the Volca is working right, and also that the Q88 is working via the MIDI port.

It seems like there's some sort of incompatibility with Korg Volcas and the Q88, which is very frustrating.
