Is the Alesis DM8 Pro discontinued?

I've searched many websites to find an Alesis DM8 Pro Kit, has it been discontinued? or is it just on a long back order list?

  • B&H Photo/Video/Pro Audio has the DM8 Pro Kit listed as 'discontinued by manufacturer' on their website. Do you know why they would do that if the kit is still available through Alesis?

  • I recently had to deal with this at Sweetwater. I was going to get the DM8 but was told that Alesis has discontinued it

  • Funny, that's one of the sites i was considering. Currently i have the DM8 Pro Kit on order through Adorama. Their site strategically doesn't state 'in stock' or 'back ordered'. It allows you to place the order, but ultimately you are placed on a back order list. I used PayPal, so i won't be charged until the item ships, if it ever does . . .

I placed the order on Dec 15th. The sales team there sent a 'back order' notification on the 19th. I called them yesterday, the 26th, and they cannot confirm or deny discontinuity. The P.O. to their supplier is in place without dispute, but the last kit they received was Dec 6, according to the rep i spoke to.

They're not supplied directly from Alesis, at least the information i got through the phone exchange seemed to indicate that. The rep expressed that there was no reason to think that it wouldn't materialize. I don't mind the wait, especially at their price point ($499). But i would like some confirmation. I mean, i don't want to wait around just to get a notification in 30 to 60 days saying, 'sorry, we can't get those any more'.

  • I've made several purchases through Adorama over recent years. I have no doubt of their sincerity in this matter. They honestly can't tell me because they just don't know. My query in this online forum is, are you guys still manufacturing and distributing DM8 Pro Kits? Your answers so far have been somewhat less than absolutely definitive. 'No plans to discontinue' and 'it doesn't mean a huge shipment couldn't show up somewhere', are creatively ambiguous. Could i get a straight 'yes' or 'no' that you are still putting DM8 Pro Kits together and sending them out the door to your various re-sellers at this present time?

  • I’m frustrated
Any new news on this J Sandeen? I wrote an email to your company regarding this drum kit, but did not get a reply. Of all your kits... I think this one would best suit my needs... technically, physically and even aesthetically. I'm pretty darn sure I'm not the only one, so it would seem a grand shame for your company to discontinue this "perfect" product. And if it's not discontinued... maybe you could at least tell us where to get it on a consistent basis? I know it will take me a couple of months to save up for one... so I don't want to have to resort to some over-priced, used and abused kit off of fee-bay.

C'mon Alesis... this is not how to build a dedicated following. Give us some clear answers on the DM8 Pro Kit. We want it! If you build it... we will come!
    • Hi Lonn, we have no plans to leave the e-drum module/kit market. So regardless if something goes discontinued, something else will follow.

Unfortunately I cannot locate stock with the support resources I have. Your retailer will know best in your location as the results will vary from region to region.

    Lonn,

Hi, i almost forgot i had chimed in on this thread a while back. I gave up on the DM8 Pro and bit the bullet on a DM10 Studio. Happy enough with the product, but then, i'm not a pro drummer. Just a weekend musician doing a lot of church youth group music. Mainly bass & sometimes guitar. Wanted to get some drum experience to round out my potential stand-in capabilities. The DM10 was more than enough for that, but i've found that i tend to over-buy feature sets so that i don't wind up depleting my parameters. My drummer friends don't tend to buy Alesis, they're more the Roland and Yamaha set, but i digress . . .

Everything that i've observed to this point would indicate that the DM8 Pro is discontinued, at least at the $499 (new) price point. I've worked in advertising for a number of years and i think it was a market strategy similar to Honda (automobiles) back in the 80's. Flood the market cheap and then raise prices later. The kit was incarnated and offered at near or below cost to get the consumer's attention for a limited time, which is now past, and now they're only available at prices close to or more than the next tier product.

This was a calculated risk strategy to get Alesis drums 'out there', into the hands of potential Roland & Yamaha buyers on a budget. I think it had a measure of success, or at least the accountants at Alesis have decided that the experiment has run its course.

Consider for example, the DM8 studio and DM8 Pro were at essentially the same price for several months and that didn't make sense. The Pro kit had better pads and a better rack. It didn't add up. Now the 8 studio is still selling for the same price, but the 8 pro is scarce, even at a higher price. Yet all the same components to build the 8 pro kit are widely available across a series of kits readily available at several retailers.

This is all calculated marketing, and Sandeen's carefully worded responses here would only seem to verify this theory. Occam's razor.
