Bad hum in Alesis 520 USB speakers

I have a pair of Alesis M1Active 520 USB speakers that have developed a loud hum. without any input, if I turn the volume knob all the way up the hum goes away, but of course, I cannot use the speakers that way. Please give me a solution.

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting. I'd like to help! Connect your speakers to a surge protector or power strip. Limit how many products you have connected to your power strip or surge protector at the same time. Multiple products connected to the same surge protector or power strip can cause this type of behavior or Ground Loop.

A ground loop is an unwanted current in a conductor connecting two points that are supposed to be at the same potential, often ground, but are actually at different potentials. Ground loops are a major cause of noise, hum, and interference in audio, video, and computer systems.

  • I unplugged the usb connection, still hums. I moved to a different grounded AC power outlet, still hums. moved the speaker away from the computer with no connection, still hums. Tried a surge protector on a different circuit with nothing else on it, still hums.Weird to me that the hum goes away when the volume knob is turned way up.

Hi! I have an old pair of Alesis M1Active 520usb's. They have a really bad hum when powered on. I've tried everything to get rid of the sound. Changing the grounding, wires, etc. I know they aren't the best but they sound great and would like to continue to use them. Any advice??
