Bass drum double triggering

Anyone have good suggestions for the bass double triggering if you aren’t careful with your foot work? I have my beater turned using the plastic head (manual says not to use felt), and the head very loose to try avoid too much rebound, but I have to set the retriever and threshold quite high to avoid double hits, and really avoid “burying the beater”.. If I set it to avoid the extra hits, I lose the ability to play quicker notes, and definitely not double bass.

I’m not an experienced drummer, so will reducing my spring tension help with the bounce?

Maybe a pad on the head to better absorb some of the hits?

Am I incorrect in thinking the loose head would help? Should I tighten it up instead?
