Can't record 4 tracks on Alesis iO4

Hi there,

This is my first time posting. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me! Big thanks in advance for any help.

I am using an Alesis iO4 with Cubase LE5 in Windows 7.

I initially had the iO4 set up to record only two channels (i.e. in Control Panel / Sound / Recording / iO4 Properties / Advanced / Default Format), as the majority of the time this is fine for me and I thought it would be easier on my computer.

Now I want to record 4 channels at once. I have now got it to say "4 channels, 16 bit" in the iO4 Properties / Advanced / Default Format box in the Control Panel, although oddly I now seem unable to change this, as it won't allow me to select the down arrow at the right hand side of this box.

In any case, I can't seem to get anything to record in Cubase through Channels 3 and 4 on the interface. I run something through Channel 3 and select Stereo In - 1 as the input, but nothing records. Does anyone know what's going wrong?

Apologies if I haven't explained that clearly enough. It's the stress :)

Thanks again in advance for any help.

All the best,

Jim

  • Hi I'm having the same problem...I have selected the switch on the back to 16bit and in the alesis io4 control pannel it says Io4 in: 4x16bit 44.1khz but has a "X" stating that the unit is being used by another program when the only program i have it on is my cubase elements 6? When i put the switch in the back to 24-bit the icon in the control pannel says io4 in: 2x24bit 44.1khz and has a dimond or tryangle which states that it is ready to use and i am then able to record channels 1 and 2 but not three and 4. I need to record 4 channels at once. Any help would be great!!!

    • Just booted pluged the interface into my computer and wal-la it works now...? Weird but good. I had the computer running. Plugged the interface into the computer and to the wall. Turned power on the interface. Started up cubase elements 6 when to device set up, noticed that io1 through io4 where there among the other listings. Clicked on control panel and saw that io4 was activated with my computers speakers and mic also. Un-selected my computers audio. went to devices, VST Connections and clicked add bus told it 4, mono and boom there was all 4 channels ready to go. Work good. Very funny but odd???? Not sure what i did right or wrong but it works and thank you very much for your help. If this changes I will be sure to let you know. Thanks Again!
    • Good to here. Also make sure your using USB2.0. Some older systems have USB2.0 and 1.1 on them. 1.1 will limit your inputs do to bandwidth limitations.

  • I got the Alesis iO4 with Cubase LE5. It's setup on 16bit 44100, and all drivers are installed including asio4all. The problem with asio4all is that the software doesn't allow me to make changes, im only allowed to view the manual or uninstall. When setting iO4 on 24bit, Cubase runs normally on 2channels, when i flip the switch to 16bit Cubase does not recognize the device and asks me to make changes to Asio Duplex, and when I do so, only 2 channels are recognized as input.

    • hi..apart from it taking 45 mins to activate cubase via e licence, downloading asio drivers, setting up 4 mono channels on vst, various conflicts with gs wave synth which if you look at internet for help seems to be a very common problem as does getting it to record 4 seperate channels and record and playback on pc speaker system.a poorly written manual.I still cannot get it to record 4 seperarte channels.unit works fine on pro tools and mac but i did not buy it for that,I will call tech helpline again to try and resolve these issues but so far not impressed
    • Sorry about the cubase licensing, unfortunately that is a Steinberg thing. Some application will want to use ASIO4ALL to use more than 2 inputs. If you are using ASIO4ALL with the switch set to 16 and the session set to 16, you should be good to go.

When you set this up by default your computer will now want to play out of the io4. You need to check you software routing preferences to change the output hardware option.

  • Hello again.

So, I never actually got this working (and haven't wanted to record 4 tracks since)! I already had the switch set to 16 bit at the back.

    I'm using the ASIO4ALL driver.

The startup guide doesn't explain specifically how to record with four tracks. Do you have any written instructions on how to set that up by any chance? I've tried extensively to get this working but can't seem to make it happen.

Thanks a lot for your help with this.

    All the best,

    Jim

  • hi there,
i have a problem about mi alexis io4 i hope you can help me, well, the first problem it`s after installing cubase le 5 (the software included) I already have the license, and the program, but, when I try to configure the vst connections it seems that the inputs and outputs are inverted, because in the inputs, appear io4 L and R (instead of 1 and 2) and in the outputs, 1 and 2 (instead of Land R) , I have tried the four channels, and using 16 and 24 bits switch and I just can`t record, (I have a shure pg 48) when I try to activate the monitor (in 24 bits) I just hear a (ssssss) noise even if I have the phones level at the min. , and can't record in cubase even whit the gain level at max.
I have tried recording in garageband and I could, but using the gain level at max.
I don`t know why this happen, maybe, something abut configuration, or a problem in the interface ?
i hope please you can help me

  • I’m confused
I'm having same trouble with Cubase 7 using ASIO4ALL

I can only record audio into cubase with CH1 and CH2 LINES

CH3 and CH4 - Cubase 7 does not record the audio

yet using my audio editing software http://acondigital.com/products/acous... on the same W7 64bit PC the audio of CH3 and CH4 records with no problems.

So can you tell me what is wrong - is it a setting in Cubase?

Also sent a support before finding this thread.

I have read the thread and cannot fathom what I need to do.

  • I telephoned support,

basically you need the i04 itself to be in 16bit mode(I WAS)

What I was doing wrong wasn't mentioned, basically you have to set up the audio tracks(and obviously arm them) in Cubase to get the audio from Channel 3 and 4 inputs, as it will use Channel 1 and 2 as Default, so on the audio track you need to choose aither mono or stereo track and set either 1/2 or 3/4 as the input(However you have re-named them).

Also when done you need to 'Save as template' and give it a name - this will then be your default project to open, if you do not you have to reconfigure in VST connections everytime(unless you save the project to re-open later).

The UK telephone support line was very good at solving my problem so kudos to them....cheers.

Anyway - it is actually simple once you know and the product is very good btw! It replaced my M-Audio Fast Track Pro as I wanted more inputs, so I'm happy with the purchase of my i04!

  • Please can I just confirm that I can record four tracks separately onto my computer and will then be able to independently edit the four tracks when I'm mixing after recording? Thanks

  • You can record 2 x Stereo Tracks, you have to set up which lines to record for each audio track, i.e. 1/2 stereo or 3/4 stereo, if you need more inputs for more instruments you could put a mixer before 1/2 and/or 3/4 line ins. I had to set it up in Cubase. Refer to the manual(It shows Cubase LE 5 set up)...

    http://www.alesis.com/company/media2....

I'm not sure about just running in mono inputs as I have 2 x mixers before both 1/2 and 3/4 ins,

I found Alesis quite helpfull and gave them a call for some technical info. I also had to save a Cubase template which I use now for every project(to keep the settings for io4).
