Cubase LE for Mac overdriving Alesis Multimix 8 USB FX

I am using Cubase LE 5 on Macbook Pro OS 10.9.4 using my Alesis Multimix 8 USB FX as my audio interface. The problem is that the audio output is overdriven to the point of sounding like pink noise on steroids from the planet Xircon! (When I use Garageband through the Multimix 8, the audio output is fine.) (I get the same thing through my Lexicon Alpha interface.)

When I switch the audio out to the headphone jack, the sound is normal. I tried downloading and installing the MultiMix USB 2.0 Macintosh Driver [v3.2.0] before I realized that it was not for my mixer (I don't have the USB 2.0 version). But the audio output seems to be the same as before. Help.
