Hi to all forum mates,

I do not understand when hearing something through alesis io2 express the ouput is stereo but when I record something by my microphone the ouput is in mono and recorded as mono as well.

Please assist me to solve this problem of mine.

  • Hello,

That's because your microphone is mono. You may think your hearing stereo but your only hearing mono with your microphone. Mono = one audio source and
Stereo = two audio sources. General rule of thumb, if it’s one microphone or one cable, use mono. Stereo has to have two inputs...that’s what makes it stereo.

If you’re recording drum overheads (two mics), stereo acoustic guitar (two mics), or the line output from a keyboard (two cables), you’ll record to a stereo track. Most virtual instruments are like keyboards. They’ll be in stereo, too.

  • Dear Chris,

Thank you for your reply but one thing bothers me and it is when I suppose to record via sound blaster live 5 pci card the same microphone records in stereo and thus the output is in stereo as well.so there is nothing like mono, why than in alesis audio interface?

So what do you say and suggest now.

    regards,

    Hani

    • Hani,

Understand that no matter what audio interface you use, no matter if it's this company or another company, the results will still be the same. Microphone is mono, as I explained above. Let me give you an example:

Let's say I want to record a live performance with your Alesis mixer. Your current Alesis mixer is only a 2-channel mixer. You only have two channels to choose from. One channel can be used for an instrumental of a song that you want to sing over and the other can be for you to sing into.

I would use a Y cable that has the 1/4" ends connected to channel 2 of your mixer. Channel 1 would have my microphone connected to it with an XLR connection. I would record into a software. For example, I could use a free software such as Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and set that to stereo so that everything gets recorded all together at once.
