How can I download/Record a MIDI file from my computer onto my Alesis Sr-18

I have a library of Midi songs, (guitar pro) I would like to know what do I need to do to record the Midi drums from the computer unto my alesis sr-18.

I can already hear the songs through my Sr-18. Commands are sent via USB interface.

Can I record into User Song, or User Pattern?

Please, please pretty please don't mark this as answered with a simple non useful answer. I've seen it here happen often, if you can't answer, opinions are welcome but don't mark it as answered, give a chance to someone else who might have another clue to pitch in.

Also I've looked almost everywhere, and I can't find anything. (I looked into all the Sr-18 threads here. Also sent an email to customer support general inquiries, and have searched the Internets extensively. I am at a standstill.

Thanks and apology for the drama. I am exhausted.

  • Hello,

Thanks for the post. I'd like to help! You could transmit MIDI data from your SR18 to your computer via USB. To make the SR18 listen to external sync (MIDI Clock with Song Position Pointer):

    1. Press the SYSTEM SETUP button.
    2. Use the Page (up and down) buttons to select Page 5 and choose "CLOCK IN - ON"
    3. After making all needed changes, press SYSTEM SETUP again to exit, or choose another page. Note: All the parameters on the following. pages must be saved if you want to retain them. To save them, press and hold the SAVE / COPY button and press the REC (ENTER) button.

SR18 - Can it receive program changes?

    1. Press the SYSTEM SETUP button.
    2. Use the Page (up and down) buttons to select PAGE 8 - PRG CHNG.
    3. Select 'ON' using the rotary dial.
    4. After making all needed changes, press SYSTEM SETUP again to exit.
    5. To save, press and hold the SAVE / COPY button and press the REC (ENTER) button.

Program Change (PC) 00 selects User Drum Set 00; PC 01 selects User Drum Set 01; PC 02 selects User Drum Set 02; etc. However, be aware that some devices number Program Changes as 1-128, others as 0-127, and some as banks of programs.

    • I have done everything, but te program change. I will mess up with it later on tonight,

      Few things:

I can already reproduce midi songs coming from my computer>USB>MIDI OUT>SR-18. But..

      1. It seems its no picking up the MIDI CLOCK from my computer (guitar pro) is this a SR-18 config prob, or computer (already clock in in system)

      2. What I'd really like to do is: RECORD the MIDI file that is being sent from my computer and being reproduced by my SR18. How can I do this? Can I record as SONG? Or as PATTERN without having to do everything manually in STEP EDIT?

(Can I record while the file is being reproduced in my alesis sr-18?

Thank you. If this works it will save me at least 6-8 hours of work. And will expand my field of view for solo performances with my loopstations.

  • I’m happy
I tried: through Alesis SR18 MIDI IN recorded in USER PATTERN from software sequencer (MOTU DP8). You can record max. 128 Beats to one USER PATTERN. Recording is realtime. Put in SR18 system settings quantize = 1/16 and Clock IN=On, Clock OUT=Off. You have to stop if Beat numbers begin to repeat from 00.

I tried to record to Alesis SR18. From software sequencer (MOTU DP8) to SR18 MIDI IN. You can record to USER PATTERN up to 128 beats. All you need to do is set in SR18 System Settings Clock In=On, Clock Out=Off, in Record setup quantize=1/16. Click Rec and Play on SR18 and Play on sequencer simultaneously. You have to stop recording if Beat numbers begin to repeat from 00. Also you can record to software sequencer from SR18 MIDI OUT.
