How do I send MIDI data from Ableton to VI49 MIDI out

Hi everyone, I just recently got an Alesis VI49 because my M-AUDIO axiom 49 was acting up. With my M-Audio however there was a fairly easy way to have MIDI data from my computer being sent from Ableton via USB to come out of the MIDI Out port of my keyboard. This allowed me to easily trigger my analog synths through ableton via my keyboard's MIDI out and was very convenient.

How do I do this with my Alesis VI49? I tried changing the device setup in the VI49 Editor to no avail. Perhaps I don't understand how that works.

Thanks so much for any help!

  • Hi Andrei,

    Thanks for posting.

In order for your VI49 to trigger and control your synths via MIDI, you will only need to connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI Out port on your VI49 to the MIDI In port on your other gear. While there is no additional setup with the VI49 that needs to be done, you may need to perform some additional configuration on your other synths for the MIDI information to be received by your other gear.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the reply but this does not help. I am currently able to trigger my synths from the Keybed on the VI49. My question was how do I use the VI49 to send MIDI thru from Ableton live to my Synths? On my m-audio Axiom there was a MIDI USB out option that actually turned off midi out from the Keybed. It was very convenient. Currently I am performing that function by unplugging my VI49 from my synths and plunging in my audio interface instead. I have to keep switching cables if I want to alternate between Keyboard trigger and Ableton trigger.

Is there a MIDI thru option to send midi data from the USB thru to the MIDI out port?

  • There is not an option to disable MIDI output from the keybed, but you can use the VI49 Editor to send MIDI data from the USB port and the MIDI Out port as well. After you've configured your VI49 for the Editor, select the keybed and turn on MIDI to DIN. This will allow the keybed's MIDI messages to be sent from the USB Port and MIDI Out. Check out this link here for more information.
