I’m frustrated

I can't believe there is no User's Manual for QX49!

I have just bought a QX49, which came with a very summary Quick Start guide briefly listing its features, but no User's Guide. I was pretty sure there would be an User's Guide somewhere, so I came to this site to download it, but apparently there is no such thing. I find it hard to believe that Alesis would sell such a product, which obviously has some advanced functions, without a manual what would at least explain how to use them.

So now I am stuck with a MIDI controller that has several programmable features, but I don't even know where to begin. For instance: there is a "Group 1" text that keeps flashing in the screen, is it normal? What does it mean? How do I program the transport keys to be used with Sonar XL2? How do I change the MIDI keys assigned to the touchpads? How do I use the advanced features and how do I store whatever I have managed to edit? And so on, and so forth.

Apparently Alesis makes the controller and expects its users to find out on their own how to use it. Frankly, this is unbelievable and rather outrageous. I hope I am wrong and there is a User's Guide tucked away somewhere. Otherwise, I will never buy an Alesis product again and will make sure nobody else I know does.

  • I’m frustrated
Just adding to my post above: I have just found out there is a firmware upgrade for my controller. I downloaded it, expecting to find inside at least a brief explanation of what it does. Not a single word! Frankly, this is absurd. So how do I find out what firmware my keyboard has right now? What is the purpose of the 1.05 upgrade? Should I apply it (running the risk of bricking the device) or not?

Come on, you guys at Alesis, would it be that hard to have somebody spend 10 minutes writing a brief explanation of what this upgrade does?

  • There is a "Group 1" text that keeps flashing in the screen, is it normal?
Yes, this is normal for the active zone/group to be flashing.
    What does it mean?
You are currently affecting the flashing selection with the parameters being changed.
How do I program the transport keys to be used with Sonar XL2?
This Sonar mapping video may help:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7Iz6...
How do I change the MIDI keys assigned to the touchpads?

-Press the ADVANCED button to enter Edit mode.
-Press a key corresponding to the setting you want to edit. For example:
-Press the key labeled DATA 1 to edit MIDI note number assignment.
-Press the key labeled CHAN ASSIGN to edit MIDI channel number assignment.
-Strike the pad whose assignment you want to edit.
-On the right side of the keyboard use keys labeled 0-9, and ENTER to enter a new -MIDI note number assignment for the pad.
-Press the key labeled ENTER to confirm your assignment
-To make additional assignments, simply strike another pad, and repeat steps 4-5 above.
Press ADVANCED when finished to exit Edit mode and save your adjustments.

How do I use the advanced features and how do I store whatever I have managed to edit? And so on, and so forth.
There is an 'advanced' section of the manual to reference for these features.

STORE: Stores QX49's controls in a preset:
    1. Press the KEYBOARD's STORE key. "STORE" will flash on the LCD along with the current preset.
    2. Use the KEYBOARD's numeric keys to enter a preset (01-20).
    3. Press the KEYBOARD's ENTER key to confirm your choice.

Concerning your firmware, I would not do anything with it unless you are trying to overcome sustain/wheel control issues.

Come on, you guys at Alesis, would it be that hard to have somebody spend 10 minutes writing a brief explanation of what this upgrade does?

There are explanations, on the website and on every folder you received in the update package.

So, Im not sure what you are referencing there.

  • Thanks for the reply, J. Sandeen. This has clarified (to a very limited extent) some of my doubts, but I still can't get over the fact that there is no User's Guide for this keyboard. After all, this is not a cheap Chinese gadget, this is Alesis! Some of your explanations, for instance, could be included in a short manual that would at least prevent non-technical users as myself to remain completely in the dark.

    Furthermore:

    (a) No, there is no "advanced" section in the manual. There is only a one-page Quick Start guide that states briefly the purpose of each section of the keyboard, but without any explanation whatsoever about HOW or WHAT FOR. Amazingly enough, there isn't even a single illustration of the screen to indicate what we should expect to see there and what this data means.

    (b) As your own snapshots show, there is NO explanation whatsoever about what the 1.05 upgrade fixes or improves, only a short instruction on how to upgrade. So I must ask again: what is the purpose of the 1.05 upgrade? And how can I tell what is the present firmware version in my keyboard?

All in all, the QX49 seems to be a decent product, but I am deeply frustrated with the lack of information and astonished at the lack of an User's Guide, a simple document that invariably accompanies any gadget with more than two buttons you purchase nowadays.
    • (a) Im not sure we are looking at the same document.

      Advanced Feature - Page 4
      http://www.alesis.com/stuff/contentmg...

That explains how the features work. No, there is not MIDI theory in the manual, this is not something you will see in a MIDI controller manual. If you unfamiliar with the feature you are reading about, you are most likely not going to be using the feature.

      (b)

If you are not having trouble with your wheel, it does not concern you and you should not worry about the update. It will not give you any extra features.

Feel free to ask me any MIDI questions, this will not be located in the manual.
There is no "right" way to use a MIDI controller, that is the most confusing part.

  • I'm buying a used one and just saw this. weird on no real manual. but I checked out the quickstart guide and I think I'll be able to figure it out with that. If not, I'll just return the unit. I'm lucky I'm buying it from guitarcenter with their 30 day return policy. I get it on the 2nd of Jan.

  • I’m disappointed
I have just the same problem!
I know how midi works, and a few of the instructions written in the "advanced" mode are useful. But there are a lot of functions that seems to be hard to do. That is not an intuitive system, and there are some inaccuracies in the same quick start guide.
For example, in the CC# assign in step 3 they say "Use KEYBOARD's numeric keys to enter the desired CC#"
After several tries i had to understand that i had not to press the keys of the keyboard with numbers (suc as to change global midi channel) but tke keys with + and - (number 6).

I am very disappointed of the way that guidel is written. It is impossible for me to use the keyboard as i like because i don't know how to use it.

It's unbeliveable there is no user manual.

  • this doesn't tell me what midi channel is coming out of the MIDI OUT of the keyboard. I'm going into a Kenton Pro Solo midi-cv converter and need the MIDI out be at Channel 1. Is Channel 1 the default or do i have to change it?

  • so i figured out to select a MIDI channel you press the ADVANCED button and then CHAN ASSIGN key-then select your channel using + so i select 1-then press ENTER key (which is last key on keyboard) but pressing that doesn't change anything on the display-then i press ADVANCED again-supposedly it is set at MIDI channel 1-but it doesn't work. Can anyone tell me a way to get this to send to MIDI channel 1?
    • Hello,

What DAW are you using with this QX49? Also, I've retrieved a full chart to help you out and explain all the MIDI CC notes for your Alesis QX49 controller. Review my image below.

    • Im not using a DAW-Im going straight into a Pro Solo MkII midi-cv converter and then into an Arp 2600.
I have an Alesis Micron-and that works as its giving off MIDI Ch 1 into the SOLO but the QX49 is not communicating with the SOLO.
I have it on USB/POWER meaning both are active-i have selected MIDI 1 by pressing ADVANCED and then pressing the CHAN ASSIGN key-i then use the + to select 1 then i press ENTER (last key) but when i press ENTER the display doesn’t show any change-then i press ADVANCED to leave the page.
Then when i hit a key it does not communicate to the PRO SOLO
      the MICRON does.
      what is wrong here?
