I’m confused and frustrated

Messed up in Cubase LE4 ville

Hello, I'm having alot of trouble getting the software (CUBASE LE4) set-up properly for my Mutimax8usb, I've downloaded recent updates and manual and this thing just seems riff with problems. I also have access to Sequel will it work with my mixer and is it a better program?

I'm a complete novice to this and it seems incredibly full of problems and misinformation (bad software editing) things don't match up manual says things that don't exist on mixer etc,... This all started when I decided to go with the CUBASE LE4 because there was a disc included that related directly to the Mutimax8usb, (well at least that's what it seemed. Also I'm using Vista Home Premium on PC, big HD (300G with nothing on it really) 2-3G of RAM so I don't think that's the problem.

I had the Sequel installed (went smoothly) but didn't know how to sync it withe the Mutimax8usb so I uninstalled and went with the CUBASE LE4 on included disc, nightmare began. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • The multimix will work with the software you want. Cubase is an added value to the controller but is not limited to that software by any means. If the computer is recognizing the mixer it will show up in the input/output device preferences of your software.

  • Every time I open the Cubase LE 4 I get the following meassge in a pop-up window titled: AUDIO DIRECT SOUND FULL DUPLEX DRIVER. (Reads as follows): The audio input is not activated. Recording audio is not possible. Click on the ASIO control panel button in the System (VST) or Device Setup (nuendo) dialog. Make sure a device name is selected in the "input ports" section and activate the corrosponding "check box" in first column.

When I do the above the device name is the device name 'Realtek' or something like that, which is the device for playing cd's etc,. on the 'right' channel for the left it just says 'Stereo-1' or something like that. But, when I put my cursor over the speaker icon in the system tray it says: Volume: 100 Speakers 2- USB Audio CODEC.

When I go into 'Manage hardware devices through Windows it lists a USB device (above) but nothing about Alesis or anything 'naming' the mixer.

Well, there you have it Mr. Sandeen, lol! Help me if you can.

Oh one more thing, the sound card in my PC is Realtek (High definition Audio) Version: 6.0.1. 5789, 2-11-2009
    Driver: C:\windows\system.32\drivers\RTkuhda.sys

  • No. It's not the 2.0 version it's earlier. I bought it in 2008 and never took it out of the box until a week ago, lol. The problem seems to be stting the ports in the co0ntrol panel. I don't know which ones to choose. There are like five for 'in' and three or four for 'out. I do the best I can then it always comes up "unmapped ports" when I try and start a project.

Is there any way that someone, you perhaps could walk me through this? Either on-line or phone? On-line would be best because of cost. Is there a chance that we could schedule a time to do this?

    Thanks,

    Gene ahart

  • 1.turn on your multimix.
    2.open cubase.
    3. go to devices>device setup>click on vst audio system(on the left)
4.Go to the right and pick your vst device. (drop down menu) press ok when selected. In your case multimix8 I guess.(close)
5.Go back to devices>VST connections>inputs (right click and remove the input bus. Now add input bus. Start with 4 mono inputs.
6.Pick outputs. Just leave the default stereo out.
    7. Go to file> new project>empty>ok
    8.go to project>add track> audio>again pick 4 mono tracks
    9.Highlight the first track
10.on the left you will see the inspector. Go to mono in>left click> check mono in( this will be chanel 1. Do the same for the rest of the channels and pick mono 2,3,4,etc....Your channels should now be mapped.
    11. Let me know how you make out.

  • Well I got through all the stuff in the email from RW and it seems to be working now but, just prior to getting that email in my frustration to try and get the thing to work I went in to the Steinberg folders and put several them on my desktop thinking that might make it easier for me to figure this thing out well, last night when I went through the first tutorial for recording the bass part it went fine except all i got was the 'clicker' recorded no bass part! lol.

The day before I just dragged and dropped the tutorial icons onto the main cubase icon and the tutorial worked by itself. I heard the bass part and everything. What a mess. I think I have the tutorial icons back where they belong, (they are no longer on my desktop) but the other programs I can't remember where I got them from.

They are as follows: My First Cubase Project; VST connections; Recording; Cycle recording; and Playback. All those icons with their little red and white Steinberg symbols are still on my desk top, where should I put them? Or does it matter?

The other two icons on my desk top are: asio4all_2_10 and 'Audio' which contains the following files: All the tutorials (1-4);HALionOne Soundbanks; Cycle Two Recordings and VST presets. Do the files/programs I mentioned in the above paragraph belong in the Audio folder?

I swear man I haven't felt like this with a PC since 1997 when I got my first one and you had to install and set-up "everything" yourself. I feel like we're almost over the hump though, then I just have to spend the next month learning how to use the thing, but that will be worth it.

Thanks again for your time and patience,

    Gene Ahart

  • RW is right Gene, save yourself the headache down the road and try to organize your music as much as possible with folders as you begin saving sessions. If not you will end up with multiple duplicates/similar file names and archiving your sessions outside of the "stereo bounce" will be a nightmare. You also might want to get a simple external hard drive down the road to back up your "Billboard Chart Toppers" ; )

  • RW, I went to properties and see nothing anywhere similar to 'find target' or 'target' or Walmart for that matter. There's a narrow window on the 'General' tab next to the Steinberg icon that you can type in but it has the name of the file in it . The other day before I knew anything at all about what I was doing with this program I dragged and dropped the icon for 'My first recording or something like that into an open cubase window and I heard the bass part, so if I can find which program or sub-program that was, the file with the bass part on it is probably there. Because when I did the first tutorial all that recorded was the clicker! It was great!

Damn, none of this would have ever happened if the install disk that came with the Alesis did not list the cubase LE 4 program as 'supplemental' with the programs for '4' other mixers listed first anyway, I'll figure something out.

J Sandeen, I'll do what you say with the folders.

OK you guys, this is a nightmare! I uninstalled everything! Updated 'all' of the software and hardware on my pc, (which isn't that old, HP Pavilian 6000 I think, dual core processor the works), I updated my sound card! Then re-installed this thing sitting on my PC desk got all the updates etc,...and I get to the same place and the 'exact' same thing happens.

When I am going through the first turoial (and god knows it isn't easy knowing which instructional manual to use since three different ones exist, and I have them all!) and you get to the point where you are 'recording' this 'pre-recorded' bass part? The bass isn't there! All I get is the clicker! If I seem to be using alot of these "!!!!!!!!!!!" it's because I'm really upset at this point. I know I'm using the forgotten step-child of the Alesis lexicon of sound products but someone there has to be able to help me make this thing work. AND, I'm no novice to PC's I've been using them for 14yrs! And I've encountered messes like this before it's just been awhile so I know a rotten egg when I smell one!

And the confusion starts with the installation disk which doesn't even list the mixer I have! It lists six 'other' products including Multimix USB 2.0 (the one that actually works?) but not the one I paid for!

It gets better: once you put the installation disk in to yopur PC the goui (or however you spell that) the 'interface' that come up for installation under the heading 'Windows XP and Vista Drivers For Your Alesis Product' The version of the mixer I have is not even listed!!!!!!!!!!!! The program that 'does' apply to this mixer is in a separate box with the heading 'Optional Audio/MIDI Sequencing Application' now if you're sitting at your PC and this is what your looking at which one are 'you' going to install? Right. The wrong one! Which is what I did three years ago when I first got this thing, breand new btw from Big Dudes Music in Kansas City, Missouri. What they failed to tell me at the time is that this thing was already obsolete. So I couldn't get it to work and put it back in the box where it remained intil two weeks ago.

So gentlemen I know it's late in the but money is money and I want to "Get Satisfied' with this product. I don't care if you have to call the CEO of the company on vacation in the Swiss Alps! I want and need for this thing to work or you can contact Alesis and maybe we can work out some kind of exchange deal but I want some 'real world' results here.

    Your Move.

    H. Gene Ahart
    • Gene please give us a call for quicker assistants. As I stated before you will not need a driver for the one you described to me. I think the main confusion is that we have three different models of 8ch multimix, some needing drivers and others not. If you have the **non usb 2.0** "Multimix 8 usb" you will **not** need any download for the computer to recognize it. The disk will just be for the LE recording software. You can download an ASIO4ALL driver to help with latency but the ASIO is in no way needed for basic operation and is purely an performance option. RW was giving you information on the 2.0, which you do not have and setup will be different. If the follow along I gave you does not get the interface recognized you may have usb codec conflicts and using a "registry cleaner" will help clean unused drivers.

So you do not see an error next to the new usb device on you device manger correct? Do you have a logitech camera by chance?

  • Mr. Sandeen,

Got a call from 'Dan' today I think it ws Dan, anyway got most things worked out.

There's just one more thing that I've noticed a couple of times but have never mentioned, (because I trust too much) but that is that the USB cable that came with my mixer does not fit in the slot in the back of the mixer all the way. That's the way it came sticks out about a quarter of an inch or so, never did look right to me but I thought, " hey they (Alesis) built this machine surely they can do a USB cable so I just assumded it was correct, but, after all the trouble I've had and therer was some MIDI noise in the background today that Dan could never figure out I see this cable agin in the back of the mixer as I'm putting this little cover I have for get over it to keep it from getting dirty and I think, 'That just can't be right.

So tell me, do all of the USB cables (that go in the back of the mixer) on the Multimix8USB do this? Or have you heard of this?

    Ya. Thanks.

    • I have no idea, all I know is that the cable does not fit all the way into the back of the machine, this does not seem correct to me. And as I have said to you and 'Dan' The tech I worked with on the phone (two days ago) this mixer has 'never' been used much less abused, it is the way it was when it was new.

So, since this is your company's product it would seem to me that you could find out if any of the ports or cables on these mixers where ever defective, or, manufactured incorrectly. And since I'm a novice at this stuff how would I know which USB cable to use to test it, or, where to get one that would be correct for this mixer?

Mr. Sandeen, I appreciate your help here, I'm just trying to get this right.

      Respectfully,

      Gene Ahart
    • There are no known defects regarding the usb port.
If you have the 1.1 mixer you will need to get a 1.1 usb (Type A Male to Type B Male) cable. If you are under warranty we can most likely send you another one if you contact the support center.

  • You mean the 'only' usb cable that will work with this mixer has to come from Alesis? I can't go to an electronics store and find something?
