Multimix USB 2.0 Only Sending Stereo Channels 9-16+mixdown to Ableton 9.1

Hi again,

I upgraded to a 16 USB 2.0 from an 8 USB 2.0. I purchased the 16 off eBay and am worried that it is defective although it is hard to say for sure.

I am using Ableton 9.1 and a Dell XPS-15 w/ Windows 8.1 64 bit (16mb DDr3 / SSD HD/ i7 2.2 Quad) with my Alesis Multimix USB 16 2.0.

- I downloaded the upgraded 2.0 drivers for Windows 8 (64). (ALESIS_USB2_2.9.64)

PROBLEM:
When I send an input to any Mono channel (1-8), the sound it is not sent through USB in a single mono channel. It is audible when sending it through the Main Mix and also in (what Ableton calls) channell 17/18 -- the mixdown.

- All Stereo channels (9-16) work as expected.

- Everything works properly when disconnected from the CPU.

- All of the channels are recognized by Ableton.

- I still have my USB 8 2.0 and it is working properly--recognizing and sending sound through all channels.

- I had issues before with using USB 3.0 ports with my 8 when I upgraded my Laptop--then hooked up a USB 2.0 Hub to retrofit the speed (which was your recommendation, thank you!). I have tried both with and with out the HUB and am experiencing the same results.

I hope you have another quick fix for me!

(I added a screenshot of the channels in Ableton. For this example, I only activated channels 1/2 in mono and 17/18 for mix-down. As you can see, nothing is coming through 1/2, but it shows in 17/18, which is counter-intuitive. 17/18 should only reflect a sum of tracks 1-16.)

Thank you

  • Hello,

This is quite a post but thank you for explaining this. I can help. First, I recommend using 2.0 USB ports on your computer with this particular mixer. The USB 2.0 port sends every individual mixer channel as well as the MultiMix’s MAIN OUT/2-TRACK OUT left and right signals to the computer. This means that, for the MultiMix 16 USB2.0, 16 individual channels are sent to the computer along with the MAIN stereo pair (18 channels in total.)

The USB2.0 port receives a stereo audio stream from the computer and assigns it to the 2-TRACK IN left and right channels of your MultiMix mixer. Note that, if a device is connected to the MultiMix’s 2-TRACK IN inputs, the signal from this device is merged with the signal from the computer.

The best way to begin using the MultiMix for USB 2.0 recording is to set up your mixer this way:

    1. Hook up your monitoring system to the MultiMix’s CTRL RM OUT jacks.

    2. Apply the MASTER section’s buttons as follows:

    a. 2 TK TO MIX: Leave UP. Pressing this button down can cause nasty
    feedback loops.
    b. MIX TO CONTROL ROOM: Press DOWN. This will allow you to hear the music being recorded in real time.
    c. ALT 3/4 TO CONTROL ROOM: Leave up or down.
    d. 2 TK TO CONTROL ROOM: Press DOWN. This will allow you to hear the output from the computer.
    e. ALT 3/4 TO MIX: Leave up or down.

  • Thanks for the quick reply!

I have those settings in use currently. Like I mentioned, I have a lot of experience with the USB 8 2.0 and am not experiencing any issues with that machine.

In the scenario I provided in the original post, I only have one single mono input in Channel 1. Ableton recognizes that Channel 1 exists, but does not register any sound. The Main Mix (channel 17-18) registers what is coming through Channel 1. (So, only receiving the SUM of all tracks, not the individual of MONO channels 1-8. Like I said, the tracks 9-16 come through in stereo perfectly.)

Please let me know the next steps for troubleshooting.

    Thank you!

  • Exactly the same problem for me, (I mean the tracks 1 to 8 sounds good but are not recorded, the others tracks 9 to 16 are working perfectly, and the routing is ok)
did you find a solution ?
    Let me know please !
