New DM10 OS 2.0

Back in 2010 a topic called Crowdsourcing DM10 OS 2.0 was started by an Alesis employee over at DMdrummer.com. Many of us DM10 users got excited about the possibility of Alesis updating the DM10 module with a few new features. At that time we were asked by Alesis which features we would like to see included in the upcoming OS 2 update. There were about 20 different features that were requested. (please see the above link for the list). Unfortunately, the idea of an updated DM10 OS 2 just faded away. Alesis never gave a reason why. I'm posting this because I would hope that Alesis would reconsider taking this project off the back burner and make this OS update a reality sooner rather than later. It would make many DM10 owners very happy.

Thanks for your time,

HF

Definately Alesis need to support their CUSTOMERS who part with hard earned cash and for whatever reason purchase THEIR products over the competition.
One of the reasons for my purchase was the implied continuing support in the form of additional "sound libraries" ( notice the plural!) and the only one seems to be from Blue Jay and very hard to get here in the U.K, and the also implied (page 32 of the manual) UPDATES (again plural)
Come on Alesis, show some integrity and lets see some action, after all this is your premium module isn't it? and you got plenty of input from users when Dan asked for it.

It ́s not okay, that ALESIS makes a great stir by one of its employes and then, in the following two years there happens absolutely nothing. Either publish the announced update, or talk to us, whether it is gonna come or not. And if not, why.

The only thing, that keeps annoying all the DM10 owners is your silence!
    Thanks :-)

Been waiting for the updates for years. I've also been waiting for the additional drum sound packs that were promised were the thing for the DM10. The latter was the reason i chose to buy DM10 in the first place. Having released only ONE additional drum pack is close to disgrace, and false marketing.

One of the main reasons I bought the DM10 was for the expandability of sound packs that was promised in Alesis' own videos. I really expected there to be more than the one sound pack. Then when Dan made the post at DMdrummer about possible new features I got excited again. Now 2 years later with no word of anything at all .......

I love my DM10, but I feel Alesis has left us at the curb.

Again to reiterate and echo the above points and comments made, a vast amount of us DM10 owners purchased this kit over "other leading brands" simply because of the fact that as time went on, these "Updates" would be made available to us.

    "2 Years?"

  • Hey everyone, thank you for showing you interest here as well as the DMdrummer forum. Here is what I got back from Dan:
    -------------------
"We spec out a lot of projects that never come to market, or come to market in very different forms from where they begin because of changes in customer needs, market trends, or other factors internal or external to Alesis. It was a mistake for me to phrase the original post in the way I did, because I see now that it could be misleading. We are always evaluating the best ways to improve our products and answer customer requests. That was the spirit in which the original post was intended."

    Thanks,
    Dan
    ------------------
Also keep in mind that Dan did state in the same post, "I cannot promise we will use all of your suggestions; I can't even promise we will use any of your recommendations, but we will investigate each one."

    I hope you can understand.
    • Thanks for getting back J.

Yes I understand. For what ever reason Alesis has made a strategic decision not to improve the DM10 module itself base on customer recommendations/requests which they asked for. It's regrettable, but yes I understand completely. Thank you again for looking into this.

Is there any chance Alesis would consider either making the OS open source or providing (at least) informational resources needed to allow us to create our own sound sets for the DM10? That seems like a reasonable accommodation for their loyal customer base given this turn of events.

    3
NO!!! I dont understand!! I feel that you have let us down and MISLED customers by making false or misleading implied statements in your advertising for the DM10.
The reason I purchased it in The first place was because of the option to be always up to date and that SOUND LIBRARIES would be available.
As you now own sonivox, why can't you fullfill the original promise that had been the MAIN REASON for buying your product over any of the competition?
I feel totally let down and DECIEVED by Alesis, and as I wrote in the DMdrummer forum, ONLY LIGHT TRAVEL FASTER THAN A BAD REPUTATION!!!!!
I will Never buy another Alesis product and will certainly never reccomend you as a company!!
    • To add to the competition argument:

The european union has strong laws against unfair competition and *deception* is one of the major matters of fact for a violation of this laws.

I - as a german customer - was also convinced to buy a DM10 with the promise to be able to load different sound set*s* (yes, plural) from other manufacturers. But I can only buy and load one single set, the BlueJay.

But there *is* a wider range of sound sets available for the brain of the DM10 module (seven up to now, in the RedBox soundshop) - to our disadvantage it's available only for the customers who bought a RedBox from Pearl, although this RedBox is in fact *identical* in construction *and OS* to the DM10!!!

So there's no!!! technical or market-related reason why the DM10 customers couldn't buy and load them - except the fact that we are no Pearl customers and don't have the "right" serial numbers on our modules.

That's the point where some european lawyers could easily chime in and urge some burning asses at Alesis headquarter. Just to let you know...

J., there's one thing I can't stand in business - treating me as a weak child or as a dumb voter, with the empty promise of getting heaven on earth before election is over.

I'm comparing this marketing bullshit to your desaster with the I/Odock and my conclusion is that Alesis' marketing staff has no learning ability and/or no interest in holding their loyal customer base.

I was evaluating some of your mixers and audio processing gear some weeks ago, but as Dan stated in your reply - with no guarantee that written product features will keep their validity after my purchase, I would throw my money away with Alesis' products.
    • view 1 more comment
    • J., I as a customer don't care if written product features were originated by development or by marketing - they are the only thing I have in my hands when I want to purchase an edrum kit and have to decide between Alesis and their competitors.

If you take a look at *your* website (and the sites of all worldwide dealers), you'll clearly and easily find this product feature for the 2011 DM10 Studio: "enables you to load new sound sets via USB connection from your computer" - SETS, not only one single BlueJay set.

So this promise as a main, important part of the product description was there and still is there. That's a clear deception of your customers in opposite to all your competitors.

And if the decision was internally made by development - then why has the RedBox the promised sets and the DM10 not?

If I could turn the clock back to May 2011 (this time last year) when I was looking at buying either the DM10 and the Roland TD9K2 / TD15K, I think given the chance again I would go with Roland.

I've already spent the money difference between the DM10 and the Roland TD9K2 / TD15K buy doing things like buying snare stands, messing around converting over to mesh, dampening racks etc...etc.....the list goes on.

I never thought I would say this but may it's time to make the cross over to Roland.

They may be slightly over priced, but at least that don't make "false promises" to their potential customers.

Apologies for how this has come across, but I think I speak for DM10 owners when I say that we are very.....very dissapointed indeed.

It really is such a shame that a module that has such potential is in the hands of such poor management. Value for money wise, there is nothing that comes close, but I am angry and appalled that the company has so little regard for its customers.
It is so short sighted of them to ABANDON their support, my band has now made the decision to sell the DEVALUED DM10 and take out finance and buy the most expensive Roland kit we can afford.
To show that I am a fair minded person, I have only praise for Numark/Alesis here in the U.K in dealing with warranty issues, very very quick turnaround with exceptionally helpfull staff. It is a great shame that Alesis U.S dont take a leaf from their U.K base's book in dealing with customers.

I do not use my DM10 anymore for monthes. I bought a Roland TD-12 because of PS and Cymbal features (2-zone HH and real 2-zone Piezo-Piezo cymbals). But I couldn't help to keep my Alesis module, "just in case". that's why I followed news about the DM10 on Hellfire's site. I put my module on ebay this morning. Good bye Alesis. Promises do not last forever.

Add another to the disappointed list.

I initially picked up a DM8 thinking that it boasted the 'features' of the DM10 (as it was 'built on its technology'. Upon seeing how ridiculously limited support is, I made the decision to purchase a DM10 module as well - now that we are seeing even LESS support I almost feel like I got a double whammy here.

It just goes to show that you dont always get what you pay for, but you certainly pay for what you get.

MR Sandeen! you seem to be avoiding the issue with your glib comments putting the blame for this on us the customers for expecting your company to act in a fair and respectable manner!!!
Yes indeed Dan did say that it may not be implemented, but my suspicion is that you now have a list of what is wanted and will at some point release a new product that then does all that is asked for expecting everyone to "upgrade" I for one will not and I expect many of the current owners will not either!!!
Disgracefull conduct!!!! you have destroyed your customers trust by not at least having let us know earlier, AND!! what about the sound libraries eh?
You've shot youselves in the foot over this, and it is my intention to warn anyone who contemplates purchasing one of your products what to expect from your empty promises!!!!!

    • Stress to them that they should get directly involved and answer these concerns instead of hiding from us behind troubleshooters (no offense, J). Anything less from them would be even more insulting to this already very insulted paying user base.
    • Statement above was about OS update. It is not satisfactory answer but let it be.
What is much bigger issue is what about sound setS???
Conviniently that question is ignored by u guys.

I too bought DM10 for that reason. That is DECEPTION and is against the law and moral. You guys deserve corporate law suit for deceiving your buyers!!

Is Alesis developing aftermarket sound set for the DM10?
Yes. We are currently working with FXpansion, Ocean Way Drums, and Sonic Reality on custom sound.

    • Thanks for that clarification, I eagerly await to see what becomes available, we dont really want to give up on Alesis and spend more cash elsewhere, we actually think the kit is pretty good especially at the price, it has enormous potential and were very excited when it was demonstrated to us last year, and the final deciding factor in buying it was, (as the store was eager to promote) the ability to stay future proof with updates and sound sets. I hope you can understand why I (we) felt so let down.

TBH, I'd rather Alesis implemented some of the suggestions from the OS 2.0 crowdsourcing thread. I don't see why this is such a problem. Even one or two small improvements will keep the communitiy happy.

Killing the product (as what is currently effectively going on), will be an awfull publicity stunt. I've been preaching about dm10 religiously for 2 years over a number of social sites (facebook, Google+, Reddit), but I certainly won't anymore if you leave it without support.

Aftermarket kits are really a nice touch, but honestly - I don't think they'll ever be able to compete with massive drum VST (BFD2 is 60 gb!!!).

You have a GREAT product, please don't give up on it.
    • Hi inconn, your support is greatly appreciated. We do not plan to give up but there is no guaranty for OS v2.0. And yes, BFD2 is awesome!
    • why don't alesis offer a site or a program that can basically give lessons using a sytem similar to rock band w real music given that the dm10 is capable of downloads and such, also to share drum kits that the users have created? I think the module is more than capable! seriously alesis! Step it up! I dropped a grand on this studio kit 6 piece kit and 2 of my toms already came loose and are off to the side after only 2 weeks! and why the f*ck do you use this type of head? why not something that isn't loud as sh*t with some decent rebound? Hi guys! I currently own a Yamaha DTXpress IV which I love but, you know, one is always wanting more and by watching DM10 in action in YouTube, I was thinking on buying one complete set.

The official video in YT says that new sounds can be added via it's USB port but now I know that only was kit was released. Only one kit in around 2 years!?

I feel attracted to how the DM10's looks and sound, but would you still recommend it or should I connect my DTX IV to my laptop and buy AD, SD, Ocean Way or similar softwares to get new sounds? I'd like to know what you think.

It would seem that Alesis has forgotten about it's flagship product and moved onto gimmick products such as the DMdock. This is unfortunate since I am going to be purchasing my first E-kit after I move into my new house later this year. I was seriously looking at the DM10 studio, but after reading how Alesis has no plans to support it any further, seeing how they tried to cover up the fact that they will not update the DM10 module, or release new sound libraries, and finding out that the module has sounds for a dual zone high hat, but not the hardware for one, has made me seriously reconsider purchasing an Alesis kit. I have no desire to support a company that doesn't support it's customers.

I WAS excited about the DM10 X. Based on the fact that the module is being ignored by Alesis, I will look to a solid e-jam kit and supported module, it may cost hundreds more, but I wont have to tweak and hope that the software and hardware are supported. Existing customers are your future customers and to ignore them for years is a troubling sign id rather not deal with.

I just bought a DM10X Kit this evening and am new here, but just caught up on all the trouble and frustration. Now I'm a bit weary about my decision to purchase the DM10X Kit to say the least! But I am very interested in updates and expansion as well and would like to follow up and be added to the email list of interested and loyal users, please.
    Thank you.

  • Hello Mr. Sandeen, I purchased an Alesis DM10X Kit last week, and have been combing through all of the forums on the DM10 Module, and reading up on all of the issues that have been on the table--for what appears to be--almost a year and a half in the making! Seems as if you have your hands pretty full with complaints and angry customers? Had I found all of this documented, troubled past, before I purchased this kit, I probably wouldn't have even bought it. But what is very true and evidently recognized among MANY of your DM10 owners, is the fact that, along with the chance for potential, pound for pound, there isn't a better kit for the price, in existence! This economy we are experiencing today, is highly volatile! And with the Internet and communication channels so easily accessible, even the LARGE corporations are within reach of the average Joe consumer, when it comes to COSTLY, IRREPARABLE, critical damage and trends that curve the flow of the all mighty dollar. Its greatly understood that corporations drop BILLIONS of dollars into R&D, and some good ideas make it to market, while others don't! Thats just the way it is! But clearly, the success of a product, once deemed marketable, is only as strong as its purpose and function-ability, material and build quality and the representatives of which it has supporting the product! From a completely unbiased and outsiders perspective, based upon the literature released by Alesis regarding the DM10/DM10X and wording used to represent the DM10/DM10X in attracting potential consumers towards purchasing said products--and by the HUGE trail of less than mediocre customer support, that is documented on more than just THIS forum--it doesn't appear to be the consumers who have fallen short of loyalty, and continuity of care. So wherein does the accountability then fall?? What could be taking so long to get back and communicate with a customer base that, by MANY COMPANIES STANDARDS, would be considered quite consistent and large enough to warrant competent support and communication? I guess I just feel I should ask these questions while I can still be classified in the, 'UNBIASED' and 'POTENTIAL' customer category? Although, I have made the purchase of a DM10X, I am still WELL WITHIN my time frame of being able to return the product and move on unscathed from the whole ordeal. But I can't help but empathize with all of the good people who, so far are guilty of nothing more than spending their hard earned money on a good product, that suffers from lack of quality and competent representation and support. I can't seem to find ONE person who has asked for something that would be unreasonable or just flat out to complex to obtain. In fact, for the most part, what is being asked for, are components that would EXTEND THE PRODUCT and it VISIBILITY in the market!! Now, maybe I'm a little naive here, but I would have to think that NEARLY EVERY COMPANY, would strive for the goal of finding ways to prolong their products visibility in the market, no? Yes? Seems like it would almost make sense. So I ask you directly Mr. Sandeen, what is the viability of the requests being put forth to you in regards to the upgradability of the DM10 Module and its future support?? I am basically concerned based upon the investment I might keep!
Thank you, Mr. Sandeen. I look forward to your insight and advice regarding my questions and concerns.

  • Hi J,

The forum seems really busy today. It looks like you might have missed my message since it wasn't a regular reply. Just in case you missed it, I was just checking in to see if you have heard anything back from the higher ups on this issue.

    Thanks again,

    HF

    • Mr. Sandeen, is it going to be a common practice for you to, 'canned respond' to your customers, nearly 2 weeks after the fact, without any regard for answering their questions, which were in fact, asked directly to you?? And given the lack of integrity and pride you obviously place in your business and customers, are we really suppose to feel uplifted and confident that you are actually, "fighting for us", as you say? When, so far, my first impression of you and how you transact business is, ignored, unanswered questions, and a canned response pep post, to an already neglected forum full of loyal customers! Its really quite shocking, and unnecessary to say the least...!
    • Sorry Sublimaze69, that seemed more like a statement than an actual direct question for me. Sounds like you want to talk to the person who makes ALL the decisions for Alesis, and that is not me. I am only the messenger for what the user needs and wants. I present the information, and the powers that be make decision which I follow.

Do I want soundsets for the DM10? Yessir!

  • Hi J,

It has come to the attention over at DMdrummer.com that Alesis has indeed released a minor OS update that allows for at least the start-up kit to be changed. This as been confirmed by a member of DMdrummer.com via a video. It appears that his Sound OS is now version 1.00q. My question is, when will Alesis put this update on their website so other DM10 owners can take advantage of this new feature and what other changes exist in this sound OS update.

Here's the link to the topic that started this:

How Do I Change the DM10 Default Start up Kit?

    and here's the video:

    DM10 Peculiar Start Up behavior

Any information that you can give us on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again,

  • What in this video are you seeing that is leading you to believe that this kit has any type of upgraded OS, HF?? To me it looks the same as the normal OS he just happens to have a different letter after the version, but it certainly appears that this guy isn't enjoying the luxury of an updated/upgraded OS but rather a defective module that doesn't start-up correctly. No? Am I missing something?

    Thanks
    Sub
    • Sub, this little letter is the sign for an updated OS. We've had similar updates in the past, the latest - which is on the web - was the letter "p", with ascending order. Some of them didn't offer new functions (just minor bugfixes), some did. No one has actually seen a letter "q" before this video.

Maybe it's a damage, but we saw another user with similar module behaviour. A function like "Load last used kit on boot" or "Load kit #X on boot" could make much sense for users, instead of manually dialing in a kit each startup.
    • Oh, ok, I see what your saying vaikl. That makes it a VERY INTERESTING video then! :-) How soon do you think it will be before we know anything about if this is an update/upgrade, or if we will all just sit in anticipation and hope, only to wind up being disappointed?? There truly isn't any competent support personnel or any continuity of care with Alesis for this area of their products! And I really don't think this, J Sandeen character, is qualified or empowered to actually get anything done other than pull everyone's chains and feed us full of BS, as we all sit and hope for bigger better things to come. I've got an attorney looking into the marketing strategies and manner in which Alesis promoted and promised great things, but seems to have rescinded on all of it, to see if something can be done legally about anything. If there is something that can be done, believe me, this guy will pursue it to the full extent of the law! But other than that it looks pretty gray as far as options go. :-(

  • Hi Sub,

You might be right, but the guy in the video came to DMdrummer.com looking for help on changing his start-up kit. I'm not necessarily assuming his module is working correctly. All I know is his OS is different and he somehow changed his start-up kit. Which ironically is an OS update that may users have been asking for. I'm hopping that J Sandeen can find out what is happing here.

Just because that person went through his kits and you didn't see anything different doesn't mean nothing is different. When Sound OS 1.00L came out, the only difference was added hi-hat settings. You wouldn't have seen that change had someone posted a video of them scanning through their kits.

You don't change a version number just to change the version number. Something was updated. What was it? Is it the ability to change your start-up kit? Why assume his module is defective. Why not just assume it isn't?

Maybe its the standard trigger settings that changed? The DM10 community will not know until Alesis states what the change is (which they really haven't done in the past) or they release the update to everyone so we can dive into the entire system to see if we can find the change ourselves. What's the harm in asking the question?

    • Well Mr Sandeen, if indeed you are actually getting things together and making some things happen and possibly some changes to the DM10 and its loyal followers, then I stand corrected about you and owe you my sincerest public apologies!! I was thinking you were all fluff and feathers like the last guy that was with Alesis, but I guess you're nothing like him! There's nothing more pleasing than watching someone come through with their promises. And I'm sure you know this particular group could use a little bit of light in the dark tunnel its been in for quite some time now! So thank you for proving me wrong about you, and by all means keep proving me wrong, PLEASE!! But I sure hope you can accept my sincere apology in rushing to judgement on you prematurely? And know that it will never happen again! I really hope you are able to light a fire under some Alesis Exec's and produce some quality things that the DM10 is really quite worthy of receiving. The potential is really there for the making, and a lot of people really do have some great ideas and directions for it to go. I look forward to what is to come, and thank you for taking the time to care!

I was just checking to see if you heard anything from your PM's yet.

    Thanks again,

    • Thanks for getting back. Few things to clarify.

      1) Is it safe to assume that there were updates to the DM10 module and that's what is being posted to the kit pages in the next day or so?

      2) Were you able to confirm if there is a new feature in these updates that lets users save the start-up kit or was the example I posted above just a fluke?

      3) Though sound sets would be nice (and I'm all for them), my original question pertained to the DM10 OS 2.0 being a possibility again because of personnel changes. Any word on that?

      Again thanks for your time,

      HF
    • 1) Yes, the updates are being packages for the user (update instructions and such) and will be posted on the module/kit pages once it is ready.

      2) I have not seen the release notes myself sorry.

      3) Yes, it is possible. All I can do is show them the user interest but currently there are no plans for 2.0 lined up.

  • Alesis has a wonderful history of slapping its consumer base in the face. Need I mention the fusion? a keyboard with all of the potential in the world to destroy the competition, yet fell short of all of the promises that your company made in it specs.
Specs that people based their entire purchase around. Specs that were promised after release in a future OS update. Just like the DM 10. So I will assume that my new purchase of the DM 10 was in vain, Because your company obviously never learned anything from the fusion fiasco.

I suspect a class-action lawsuit is in your future. Along with reprimand from the federal government for fraudulent business practices. Luckily, I work for the federal government so I can get things moving along fairly quickly.

I suggest to everyone here that you save your breath. Alesis are the kings of bait and switch. They lore you in with false promises that never come true, and laugh all the way to the bank. A bank that we fill for them by continuously buying into their empty promises. I suggest that everyone moves on and never buys another Alesis product again. They will only learn when they are on the verge of bankruptcy and even then... I doubt they will care.

    • I love that you gave me the number to your legal department. Any chance I can get the number for your CEO also? Because I would love to talk to him to figure out why this keeps happening with your products.

If it were just one, I can understand. But every time this happens it affects the reputation of your company and sooner or later no one is going to trust your products. The fusion was a great example of a company listening to what people wanted in their instrument. Unfortunately, you failed to initialize the SATA port. Which meant a lot to quite a few of the people who bought the keyboard. Not to mention other issues that were supposed be taking care of in an operating system update, which never happened but was promised time and time again.

I thought after all of this time these issues would've been worked out with your company and people would be happy again, I could trust buying your drum module. But once again unfulfilled promises made by your company that are listed in the specs of your product on retailers websites were not met. On top of that you have a CEO who goes on record saying that they are working on the issues at hand and hope to have something soon, that was over a year ago. Is he running for Congress? I don't get how something so important to the vitality of your company can go unnoticed or uncared for by the people whose jobs depend on it. To me and everyone else on the site, it looks like your company is only interested in the initial money grab and once the product is bought and paid for they shut the consumer out. And to look like they actually care they throw a bone every once in a while, Unfortunately the consumers are that dog that goes chasing after a bone that was never thrown at all.

You guys are in the position to be the leader in musical equipment across the board. You have great ideas and great implementation, but unfortunately promises go unfulfilled and you're destroying that relationship that makes you who you are. You should have one department set up for nothing but making and implementing OS updates. Listening to the musicians, finding out what they want and figuring out how to implement that in the product that they bought from you. You do that and no one will buy any other product from any other manufacturer, if they can help it. Continue on the path you are on, and no one will trust that anything that anyone in your company says will come true.
    • Hi Berkeley, yes you can talk to whomever you wish when calling, some may be harder than others to get ahold of.

I understand everything you would like to see Alesis do, unfortunately I do not make these decisions myself.
Thank you for taking the time to write to us.
