Nitro for my son?

Hey all,
Looking at purchasing an electronic drum set for my 9yo boy. The Alesis seems have be a great price/performance.

The price of the new Nitro set is really tempting, but I want to make sure that we're not going to have to go out and buy a new set in a couple years. I see that the nitro has the ability to choke the crash and has a dual zone snare. I think those are two musts for even a beginner. Also, I like that it has a 'real' kick-drum pedal.

But my question is on the hi-hat. I feel that having a realistic hi-hat is pretty important since his instructor will have an acoustic set. I believe that the 'feel' is pretty important to replicate.

So, is the Nitro able to use the Alesis Proxhihat or another similar hi-hat setup?
If not, what set(s) allow the use of the Proxhihat

Thank you for your time.

    Hi Edward,

    Good question!

The Pro X Hi-hat is currently only compatible with the DM8 and DM10. The high resolution and various voice options are built around a firmware update for those models that provides the necessary functionality. I'd be happy to submit a feature request for implementation in the Nitro kit though!

That being said, the Nitro kit hi hat will respond to open, half-open and closed hits (using the included pedal for variation) as well as "chick" and "splash" sounds from the pedal without striking the cymbal. It may not "feel" exactly like a real hi-hat without the pedal and cymbals being directly connected, but I think with the threshold and sensitivity settings, you'll be able to get a fairly accurate response out of it that would be suitable for even beginner drummers.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Man, that nitro kit sure seems to fit the bill.

Concernign the ProX hi-hat. It seems to me like a natural addition to the Nitro; I mean if it's only a firmware upgrage that's required why not have the capability. I bet folks would buy more of those hihats.

Also, what about the Forge and Command sets. The Forge isn't that much more; does it have the ProX capability?

Lastly, unrelated to this, is your website. What would be great is a way to compare your lines side by side with a bulletized list of what each has. That way one can easily see and relate the capabilities. that way I can more easily see the differences/similarities between say the DM6 USB and the Nitro. Or the Nitro and Forge. Amazon's website has the side by side comparison of the Nitro, Forge, and Command sets. Why wouldn't you all? No need to answer...just a recommendation from a shopper. Check out best buy's comparison capabilities. They are pretty slick.

Thanks for your time Corey. Think I'm sold on the Nitro.

  • Hi. I LOVE the Nitro and think it is a great and flexible kit. However, my hi-hat is only on or off....even says it on the pedal. It doesn't go half open. What am my missing?
