QX49 v1.04 firmware issues? [Firmware v.1.05 now available}

Hi,
I bought a QX49 this week, and did the Firmware update on it after a couple of days playing with it. After the update, I performed a factory reset (hold down loop and record keys while powering up).
Unfortunately, now the pitch bend wheel does not send any messages! It was working before the update/factory reset (v1.03) but now I don't see any sort of message at all.
Also, I don't seem to be able to change the max. value from the mod wheel - it sends CC#1 but only values 00 - 04! This seems the same on all presets.
The "manual" is, tbh, pretty poor when it comes to this sort of thing, I could list many issues which the booklet doesn't explain. In summary, I have 2 questions:
1. is the v1.03 firmware file available? or can someone explain how to get the pitch wheel working again;
2. How do I change the max. value sent by the mod wheel (currently it is 04)?
Cheers,
Martin

  • 2 more weeks have passed again, I would hope that there might be another progress report from Alesis?
It would be interesting to know how many units have been returned for refund, and also how many sales have been lost due to this issue?

  • FirmUltras,
I'm not surprised you have lost patience with this problem, and Alesis in general. I bought my QX49 new from a company via E-Bay, but I don't wish to return it to them as it isn't any fault of theirs that this problem exists. From professional experience, I know that a customer return costs a company a lot of money, and I don't wish to do this to the company who provided me with good service, free delivery, and fast despatch (even though it was just before Xmas). My issue is with Alesis, and I will not let this go until it is resolved.
Best regards with your new keyboard - I also will not be buying Alesis ever again.

Wow im soooo happy I found this page from a google search of the QX49... I had plans to purchase this controller TODAY, the QX49 was one of the most attractive and feature packed controllers for the budget price range but soon after I discovered that some customers were experiencing troubles with the sustain issue and after i found out they fixed that I ran across this page saying the fix messed up the wheels lmao... that is inexcusable seeing how the fix took forever, and as soon as its released somebody found another bug proving to me that nobody at alesis actually uses or cares about this equipment because how can something as important as mod and pitch wheels be passed over without noticing when your performing a fix and supposed to be making sure everything is in order?? Anyways long story short, went out and purchased the Novation Nocturn 49 instead... blessing in disguise, that "automap" feature is the bees knees my friend & customer service over there is top notch, they wont break your equipment and leave you hanging like alesis would/did. P.S. Hire some real programmers.

  • Glad we saved you fgrom wasting your money.
Wish I had known about the Alesis customer support provision before buying.
Beginning to think that this issue and a similar problem with the dm6 drums (firmware related) are not getting any attenetion from the company.
I think my next move is to find the contact details for as many members of the Alesis board as possible.
    In the meantime - #myQX49isUSELESS and #dontbuyALESIS

This is just stupid at this point. Fixing this problem would take all of a day. How about this Alesis, if you're not going to fix your products then why don't you provide us with the source code for the firmware and we can fix it ourselves. My friend is a programmer for moog and he implemented USB MIDI for there mini moog in less time than it's taken you to fix the GD pitch and mod wheel. Unfortunately i'm stuck with this thing because the warranty is useless without the receipt from guitar center which i no longer have. And here's something that will piss you guys off. You know Alesis is reading this page because any time you say something along the lines of don't buy or this stuff is garbage they pull your post. At least they could keeep us in the frigging loop, but I think they are just going to let us bitch and moan about it until we just write off our QX49's as bricked. To them I guess that's the best way to get the problem solved.

The C.E.O. of Alesis is based in Rhode Island, his name is Jack O'donnell. I can't find an e-mail or a direct number, but the head office for Alesis is in Rhode Island and this is the number 401.658.5760. I will be spending much of my day today getting in touch with the highest ranking person I can. Since the IT department doesn't seem to want to make us happy maybe a little motivation from the CEO will get them moving. I am angry at this point and feel like a company that should care about my satisfaction doesn't. I recommend that you all try and contact alesis. If I find his direct number I'll post here so we can all call him and let him know that his product and customer support are failing his customers.

  • The calibration routine for the pitch and mod wheels has been completed and is in QA and beta testing right now. It should be out and on the site in a day or two.

  • I’m Relieved
    All,
I've done the v1.05 update and calibrated the Pitch and mod wheels using a Windows 7 laptop. After a re-boot, the transmitted values of the wheels are shown as expected on thr built-in LCD display.
I then hooked up the QX49 to my main machine which runs XP64, and monitored the output data using MIDI-Ox. Again, the data output was correct in MIDI-Ox, so congratualtions to the Alesis software team - the reported problems look like they are solved (in my case at least).
It is a bit too late for me to try any more testing with my "new" keyboard, but have already started another thread asking for help with various functions - unfortunately, the Quick Start Guide is just that, there are many things missing and no full manual available as far as I can see?
Anyhow, Thanks for the solution, hopefully I can now begin to get creative again, which is the whole point after all!
    Cheers,
    Martin

  • It's probably worth mentioning to everyone that you will need either windows 7 or XP 32-bit (not sure which SP version would be required).
The firmware updater and calibration app do not work with my windows 2000 machine, or the main XP 64-bit PC. I borrowed a windows 7 laptop to do the update and calibration. If you are struggling with either process, here's a few tips:
    1. Un-compress the whole file, you should have 3 folders - "QX49 - Firmware 1.05", "QX49 Wheel Calibration Tool", and "Updater Application". Open this last folder first and follow the "instructions and Notes.txt" file - you need to make sure the updater has worked before you can calibrate the wheels.
    2. After the v1.05 update, you should see "105" in the bottom right corner of the QX screen when you power it up. This is the version of firmware and must be 1.05 to calibrate.
    3. Open "QX49 Wheel Calibration Tool" folder and follow the instructions in the "README.txt" file. The actual calibration tool is the file "Wheel Calibration Tool.exe" which you can now run.
    4. To start the calibration, press the space bar on your PC - Then follow the instructions very carefully on the screen - Sometimes it looks like it hasn't changed from the previous screen, so read it carefully. It's actually very simple - you hold the pitch wheel fully up and press the top "C" key on the QX49 (the enter key); then hold the pitch wheel fully down and press top C; Let go of the wheel so it goes to the centre position and press top "C". The mod wheel is similar, except you just do a maximum and minmum read - it doesn't have a centre position. And that is all there is to it - very simple. It's just unfortunate that the testing of the original update missed such a fundamenttal flaw. Hopefully lessons have been learned all round.
    Cheers,
    Martin
(P.S. If someone could now answer my questions re the MIDI implementation, I would be very happy - they are in a new thread in the "Questions" section.)

  • I’m happy
The update works - everything is back to normal. I had some trouble updating though. I think it has to do with Windows installing a new driver when the updater puts the keyboard in the "update mode". So, after the step where you turn the keyboard off and than on again, WAIT before you continue! I got a couple of "update failed" messages. If this happens to you, just repeat the steps and eventually it will work.

Thanks Alesis - everything is great now, even though your updater is a little flaky. Also, I really hope you will remove the red tape - it was unacceptable for the community to be treated like we are idiots and that there is no problem. Own up and fix it faster next time!

  • I just bought the QX49 and one note in particular is having extremely annoying sustain issues. It will ring on forever unless I play another note to stop it. I have applied the 1.05 firmware update and the issue persists. Please let me know if there is another way to fix this without some sort of hardware hack.

Needless to say, I will never be buying an Alesis product ever again. But I'd like to get something out of my $200 spent on this thing.

  • i buy qx49 yesterday .i cannot use with midi.so please anybody can tell me how to use it how i can start.
    • What are you having issues with?
    • Not sure if this will help:
      1. If you are not using USB, you will need a power supply for the keyboard. a 9V dc supply is required. I use the USB and MIDI, so the QX49 gets the power from the USB port. USB is the MIDI input port to my PC, and the Keyboard MIDI out port is connected to my MIDI patchbay for my other MIDI devices.
      2. Use the "Keyboard MIDI Out" port - the "Computer MIDI out" is connected to the USB port only - i.e. if you use the QX49 as a USB-MIDI interface.
      3. The MIDI ports are disabled by default, to enable the ports you press "Advanced" button, then the "MIDI out" key. This will go round the options, shown on the display, of no ports enabled, USB only, Keyboard (MIDI out) only, and both enabled. I use with USB and Keyboard shown in the display, and the "Keyboard MIDI out" port transmits fine to my other devices.
      Hope this helps,
      Martin

  • Firmware 1.05 for pitch and mod wheel works fine on XP SP3 32bit system. Calibration tool also works perfectly. Just remember to close down the firmware updater before using the calibration tool because the space bar which is required doesn't work if you leave this window open for some reason.

Cheers for your help on this Alesis, it's just a shame you lost so many customers in the interim
