Setting up a Control Pad with a DM10

I'm hoping someone can help with my situation. I have a DM10..and a Control Pad. I use the DM10 all the time to trigger my acoustic kit for gigs...I'm very familiar with it. That said...I'm having issues getting the Control Pad to operator correctly. I can change the sounds on a single pad...or have each of the 8 pads produce the same sound...but I can't figure out how to assign a voice to each individual pad. No issues with the Control Pad when used with a keyboard or Ipad Midi setup..but can't get it working correctly with the DM10. I've followed steps as directed in the manuals...still no success. Since I use the DM10 to trigger my acoustic kit...I'm looking to add the Control Pad for additional percussion sounds. Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer up some advice and wisdom.

  • Are you using the original DM10?
There is a way to get 57 trigger zones.

The Alesis DM10 has 22 zones , but also 35 additional midi notes that can be accessed with midi.
The DM10 lets you assign any of its on board sounds (or samples) to any of its midi notes with each one of the 35 additional midi notes being totally editable, FX, EQ, Decay, Layer A B etc.
All you needed to access them was a Alesis Trigger I/O, Alesis Control Pad and a Midi merge box. (if you want to use all the Trigger I/O and Control Pad together).
You could also use the DM Dock or other modules with a 5 pin midi out and the ability to reassign midi notes that have been produced since.

The “Alesis DM10 Trigger Zone Input Chart” will be needed when doing this.

Here are a couple links that should be helpful using Alesis Trigger I/O (20 zones) +Control Pad (8) zones.

These were the current TMI at the time (2010).

  • Hello Chaser. Thank you for your reply! It looks like very good information...but I"m still stuck after reading and attempting it. I can get the DM10 to recognize the Control Pad. I've switched to Midi #37...assigned a sound from the DM10 to the first pad..and it works. Problem is...I can't do the same thing for any of the other pads on the Control Pad. I've switched to Midi #39 for the 2nd pad...followed the same process....and whatever DM10 I choose for that...will also play on all of the other pads when struck. I understand the concept that I am trying to basically create a "kit" of 8 individual sounds in the Control Pad...and inputting to the DM10. Again..not a MIDI dummy...it just seems odd that using the Control Pad with another device is very straight forward for MIDI...but with the DM10....not so straight forward.

  • I haven't had a DM10/Control Pad in a number of years.I still have a dozen or so Trigger I/O's which basically are the same as the Control Pad..without the pads (1/4 inputs instead). The Trigger I/O's work well with the STRIKE module (and many other modules) as that's what I used until I got the STRIKE Multipad. The only difference is the STRIKE module doesn't have the extra notes (a shame ..really).
I don't remember how the DM10 recognizes/identifies the additional notes using external triggers,if in edit mode you just select NOTE CHASE..strike the pad and it shows up and you make the necessary adjustments to the settings or can name the trigger

Try using one of the preset maps in the Control Pad as a template.
    ..PRESET 3 GM PERC
That mapping is set to transmit on MIDI CH 10 and has the 4 outer pads using extra notes...72,74 (left side)68,65,(Right side)

With the DM10 set to receive on CH 10..the 4 pads should show up.

    DM10.
    Press DRUM KIT.
    Press EDIT INST.
Press NOTE CHASE then strike the pad on the Control Pad
    Select Function: TRIGGER..assign voice....
    Repeat for all pads..
    SAVE kit

If you don't have it , here is the Control Pad User Guide..
You won't find it...even in Legacy on the Alesis site
