I’m frustrated

Several Vortex 2 features not working- (MIDI rookie)

Hi,
Never owned a MIDI before this Alesis Vortex w2 so dont know much on the tech side. I followed "IbandUK" tutorial vids on Youtube on how to set it up to the letter but my faders, S1 slider, ribbon, and mst of the pads are not transmitting the CCs i have assigned them in the preset editor. It could be because im doing something wrong with channels:

1-Pitch wheel, Vol slider (S1), Sustain, Upper zone, Tilt, ribbon,
2- Lower zone
3-Pads

Like i said though Pitch wheel/sustain work but not ribbon or S1.
I downloaded the latest firmware, and factory reset but nothing changed. Ran a diagnostics on MIDI OX and every feature had input and output so it must be me doing something wrong.
Pls help an amateur out

Lou

  • Hello, Louis

    Thanks for posting!

The Pitch Ribbon will only work with specific VST's, not all virtual instruments will have the option to receive this type of message therefore, they may not react. What are you using for a plugin?
If you are trying to map the S1 slider it will be easier to map the slider within your software, most DAWs and plugins have a MIDI Learn feature so I would recommend running through their documentation or online tutorials on how to do this, it will be much easier than trying to map it with the editor. :)

Side Note: Make sure there is NO other music software open while you are using the Vortex Editor, this could cause interruption when sending and receiving presets.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Criss cheers for the reply,

Im using Ableton Lite which came with the Vortex 2 without plug-ins yet. This is my first time with any MIDI tech so im really clueless about plug-ins, VSTs, mapping and the editor and its tricky to know where to start when theres very little in the way of guidance online or in the manual specifically for the Vortex2. Do you know of any comprehensive guide (book/videos) i could use?

So from my understanding youre saying I shouldnt really use the Alesis preset editor for progamming the faders/pads/ribbon, instead using my DAW (Ableton Lite)?

So you reckon i should download a VST and plug-ins? Any ones you recommend?

Thanks for the help, still not getting anywhere.

  • Hello, Louis

Okay Great, If you are just trying to MIDI Map in Ableton I would recommend following this article on their web site, it's super simple :)

The preset editor will be helpful if you are trying to change CC notes, MIDI channels and Program changes on your pads. If you are just trying to map a slider to let's say, a volume fader on a track in Ableton, you are better off just MIDI mapping in the DAW. The stock instruments in Ableton will not react to the touch ribbon messages from my experience, that may be a question for them. But if the keyboard is sending messages, it's doing its job.

    Hope this helps!
