Strike Pro hi hat behaving erratically

Just set up my strike pro kit yesterday. Unfortunately, the hi hat is messed up. The sounds are totally unpredictable. When I do a simple quarter not foot beat I get double hits, no hit at all, open hat, closed hat. Then it gets more chaotic when I use a stick, triple hits, open when it's closed, etc. It's random, chaotic. I called tech support and he couldn't help. Set up a call for Monday. So I've got my brand new strike pro kit that's basically unplayable the first weekend I have it.

  • I'm also getting random hits on all of the pads consistently. These are just released, but if anyone else has one yet, I would love to hear your experience.

  • Have you set it up using the suggested set up in the user manual? It suggests tightening the clutch while the hats are closed (I actually pushed the top hat down further than resting and tightened the clutch). It seemed to help. you can also go into the trigger settings and set the "open" and closed" values to help. I have a tendency to bounce my left foot so I had to set "closed" to somewhere between 85-99 and "open" to about 85.

My problem is saving these settings. There is a problem in saving or Im doing it wrong.

  • Thanks, I did set it up as described, and spent some time with the trigger settings, but not the open and closed. I'll check that. The factory settings should be close to typical. I've owned, and played, quite a few e drums, all Roland, but never experienced anything this far off, essentially random.

  • Problem mostly solved, but I had to unplug tom 4, as it seemed to be wreaking havoc on the whole system. It was constantly triggering. I'll mess with the trigger settings on that.

Then I did as Mike suggested, which helped. Then I messed with the trigger settings more. Now it's mostly there.

However, I am not crazy about the feel of this hat at all. I like hats that open and close, not this mushy spring mechanism. The snare is great, and so is the kick.

I don't know about firmware. I thought the delay on shipping was that they caught a problem like this and didn't want to ship them out until the firmware was updated. Usually when you get new gear they want you to upgrade the firmware before you do anything and the fact that there is no upgrade makes me really nervous. I just noticed that my tom 4 is all over the place too but I don't want to disconnect it.

I honestly knew this would happen. I just spent the last two hours messing with trigger parameters. I think the problem is with the hardware honestly. Hopefully we can get some answers in the next week.

By the way Alesis, that was a real shitty job with the assembly instructions. Why don't you take some notes from Ikea.

  • I spent about 40 minutes with Josh at Alesis this morning to get the high hat working properly, that is, predictably. We got it closer, but it's still doing things I don't expect. A really loud hit occasionally, an open when it's not open, not triggering but then sounding several quickly in a row, unpredictable open/close response.

The dynamics are off. Just doing a simple, hat closed - one and TWO and one and TWO and - the dynamics are unpredictable. Comparing it with a TD-15, it's not even in the same ballpark. I always know what the TD is going to do, which is pretty important. I'm going to give it another day or two of tweaking, then back it goes if I can't get the hat to work. Damn shame too, because the rest of the kit is great.

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting. I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this.

This is more than likely to do with your settings on the module. Where do you have your open and closed values set to? You may want to try changing the "closed" setting to 70 or 75. You may also want to try using one of the 4 Exp. curves, as well.

Let me know how this goes.
    • I think it's really cool that you guys monitor these forums and try to help out. I spent 4 hours on it yesterday playing with the settings, that's why I'm afraid it's a hardware issue. I'll be on the phone with tech support tonight and will follow up with you guys tomorrow.
    • Hi Bill, always refreshing to see a company representative in forums! I'll give this a shot. I haven't messed with the expression curves, as I figured those would be tweaks once everything is how I want it. I'll let you know. Thanks

  • I can't get it. I've spent at lease couple hours, including 30 minutes with Alesis tech, on the following values:

Pedals - hat open, hat closed
HH Edge - sensitivity, threshold, curves
    HH Rim - same

I simply cannot get a predictable outcome. Hit hard, and it goes soft and hard. Hit medium, and it goes from super loud to no trigger, to semi-open, to tightly closed, to hits that aren't even triggered, a latent hit from a previous trigger I presume. Unless there is a precise, single value for each that will make everything work, the hi hat is unusable for me.

I'm not new to electronic drums, and I have a pretty good idea what's feasible and what's not, and what to expect. This hi hat is the worst I have played, even on cheap single-hat kits.

  • Was just playing the kit for awhile, just ride and crashes no hat, and it's such a fantastic kit. Everything feels and sounds great and responds well. Snare, kick, toms, so nice. Four large toms, three crashes, 14" snare and kick. All this for < 2500? I just started to check out the bazillion sounds and mess with them. This kit could blow everything else away, but for the hat. Hoping this alledged firmware update happens in the next three weeks (return period), and fixes the hat, or at least improves it, and we can get some kind of guarantee from Alesis that they will make it right.

Oh, and it LOOKs great. Red sparkles vs. a little black disk.

  • They blew me off....never called. I had a sitter come over to watch the kids so they would have my undivided attention and nothing. By the time I went to call THEM they were closed so yeah...pretty pissed off at this point.
    • I'm terribly sorry to hear that. Obviously, this is not the impression that we want you to have. Please expect a call from an agent shortly. Thanks!
    • Yeah that's a drag. It seems like they would be scrambling to avoid a bunch of returns and negative reviews of their flagship kit out of the gate. That said, I'm not sure what they can do short of a firmware update or a hardware replacement. Another call with "set the sensitivity to..." isn't going to do it. I've adjusted every parameter I can, many times. So I'm going to give it until maybe mid-next week before returning it. But we get the word before then that they know what the problem is and a fix is on the way, I would love to keep it.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the kit. Spent hours resolving most of the ghost triggering. Still there are some random events that mess you up when trying to tweak other pads or cymbals. I need to look into reducing the effects as some of the drums have too much reverb. The hi-hat is much better after working with Alesis over 3 phone calls for over an hour. However it is not perfect. Looking forward to the firmware update to resolve little quirky things. I guess I will give it a 3.75 out of 5 for now. I was at a 3 based on price and quality of the hardware even given the hi-hat and other technical glitches. However if the glitches can't be solved, I'd return in favor of a more expensive Roland which won't have these problems.

  • I too have spent 4 days now with support trying to nail down this hi hat choke issue. The open/close function is way off. The bottom line is I have to wait for the firmware update to see if that fixes it. I'm checking with Sweetwater to see if I'll still be covered with return in that time period.

    I'll keep you posted...

By the way...is anyone NOT having ANY hi hat issues??

I will also say that Alesis has been very good thus far...

  • I was playing it a bit this afternoon, even though my blood pressure rockets when I do because it's so frustrating. No matter the settings, I'll do a few measures, on the hat, and half the hits don't trigger then I'll stop, wait for it...and...5,10,15 seconds...here they come! Chick...chick chick.....chickchickchickchick. It's a mess. Open, close, are sometimes reversed. Everything else I mentioned above.

If I can get a written guarantee from Alesis and/or sweetwater that I'll be able to return this thing after the typical return period, I'll wait and hope for the best. It's a diggable kit. Otherwise I'll spend the weekend packing it up after posting a YouTube video on all of the problems, and wasting all of my time with it.

  • I've had similar issues. In my experience the hihat trigger itself is faulty - it does not act as a dual zone trigger in any other input or any other module.

Swapping in the GeoDrum hihat mechanism and the single zone hat from my DM-10 works decently as a work-around.
    • That could explain why Tim Root/Alesis has been referring to the Strike hihat as just "movable" whereas the crash and ride cymbals are clearly stated as dual or triple zone.
Maybe someone should check the hihat response with a DM10 Realhat pedal.
    • So what does this mean exactly? Are we looking at a design flaw or do some of us just have bad hats? When I was speaking with Josh at Alesis he mentioned that the cymbals worked best when striking the word "Alesis" and I was under the impression that you could hit them anywhere. Either way it didn't correct my issue.

  • I have an issue with mine too...The edge doesn't work. Is that what you're experiencing?
    • Not really, it sounds like you need to adjust your sensitivity and threshold. The problem here is the hi hat pedal. Pushing down the pedal doesn't deliver a consistent trigger.
    • I was having all the hi-hat problems mentioned in the forum - unpredictable open, closed, or no-trigger when stomping 1/4 notes on the pedal. Tried editing all the parameters. So far, I'm having reasonably predictable results with the "Open" set to 90 and "Closed" set to 45-50. The caveat is I have had to totally change the way I play with my hat foot. Instead of bouncing my foot, I have to keep the ball of my foot in contact with the pedal and actually press the pedal down pretty hard. Doesn't feel natural at all. I'm using a Pearl Eliminator hi-hat stand.

I should probably mention that I haven't yet updated firmware at all. It's at whatever version was in it when I bought it a few months ago (maybe Summer or Fall 2017). Only now getting around to setting up and playing it.

  • Hey, everyone!

Thanks again for sticking around and providing all this feedback!

As mentioned above, we have a firmware update in the works related to the trigger performance, including the hi-hat pedal and cymbal. We should see this by the end of the month, and will be available for download on the product page.

I also have some hi-hat tips for setting up your hi-hat in general that I think you'll find helpful. This will assist you with dialing in your hi-hat now, and for future firmware as well. See below:

    1. First, make sure the little 1/8” cable coming out of the bottom cymbal is plugged into the Pro-X module that the bottom cymbal sits on top of (there are pictures in your Assembly Guide). This cable helps tell the module when the hihat pedal is closed.

    2. Make sure the spring that rests in the bottom cymbal has the black "stopper" on the top side, closer to the top cymbal and not down inside the cymbal. If you have it upside down, it won't work properly.

    3. Now loosen your hi-hat clutch and let the top cymbal rest on top of the spring.

    4. Here is where things get a bit preferential: You can tighten the hihat clutch right where it is. However, some will prefer to have the top and bottom hihat cymbals a little further apart when idle. If that's the case for you, I'd recommend pulling the top cymbal up off the spring just barely an inch and tightening the clutch there.

I wouldn't recommend pushing down on the spring and then tightening the clutch. Not only does this make your two hihat cymbals contact more frequently, but compressing the spring actually limits how much data the module can use to make the different hihat articulations sound correctly!

The same idea applies if you raise your top cymbal very high off the spring and tighten the clutch. Now you have a large range where you're not compressing the spring at all.

    5. Okay, so now for some settings. As we know, each hihat brand/model is slightly different (different rod lengths, different springs, tension, etc...). So we put in a way to calibrate for all those differences. On your Strike module, press the TRIGGERS button.

    6. Either turn on NOTE CHASE or go to the top right corner of the menu to select any one of the HiHat cymbal zones.

    7. Now press F1 or F2 for the PEDAL menu

    8. Set the Open to 90

    9. Now start the Closed at about 30

    10. While still in this menu, start chicking/stomping the hihat repeatedly; like you're counting 1/8 note time while playing kinda thing... While you do this, listen for the hihat closed "chick" sound. If you're not sure you're getting a chick sound, you can always periodically switch back to the main KIT menu and look at the flashing graphics.

    11. While still stomping in the TRIGGERS>PEDAL menu, start slowly turning up the Closed value.

    12. You’ll hear a point where the distinct chick sound starts happening comfortably. Keep the Closed setting there. We find for most hihat pedals, these will be between 50-70, but of course results can vary according to your hardware and your playing style.

    13. Now just play the hihat generally/musically. You may still want to tweak the "Open" parameter to change fade from open to closed sounds, but I think most will be happy at around 90.

    14. That's it!

In the future firmware update, the process above is still a good idea to follow, but you will find that the adjustment range and overall performance is more forgiving; easier to achieve with improved dynamics.

STAY TUNED to the Alesis Strike and Strike Pro product pages!

  • None of these tips and tricks are working for me. I'm still getting lots of random hits (as many as normal hits), delayed hits, completely unusable open/close foot hits. There's also a "Why isn't my Strike Pro Hi Hat working?" help page on the Sweetwater site, which I tried earlier. None of those values worked either. Unlike some of you I've been using e-drums for about 15 years. Never have experienced anything like this. The various parameters were for tweaking according to playing style, preference, not to get it sort of working. I don't see how any of these settings can help a 10-15 second delay before hearing a bunch of the missed triggers. I hope they are working on that.

Bill R., when you say "by the end of the month" for a firmware update, do you mean by the end of April? That would still be within my return period if it doesn't fix it.

I went into Guitar Center to pick up a drum set rug for my new Strike Pro kit. Sat down at the Roland and the Roland played like a real hi-hat, even looks more like a real hi-hat. I now have hi-hat envy. I hope you guys can fix the issue. If you cannot, do you know if a roland hi-hat would work on the alesis module?
    • view 1 more comment
    • Very unlikely it's the hi hat only, not with the kinds of problems I'm having at least. Hoping it's not a combination of the hardware and software.
    • My Strike module is in transit for issues. I am with you, if the fix and firmware don't give me a musical device and a hi hat that works well, it is gone. I do enjoy the pads and kick with my old TD module .I am hoping Alesis is smarter than most think and had a design that worked before the release. I can accept a manufacturing problem or a software bug if they fix it.. I won't take "well that's the nature of the beast". I bought an improvement. Price is not the biggest part of this.

The packing tape on my kit showed some age like it might have been in a warehouse for a year?

Beyond frustrating considering the purchase of this kit also meant I had to buy another hi hat stand unlike my DM10X kit. Might even try to use that high hat to see if it works.

I know it sounds crazy but I have faith in Alesis. I still have a Fusion 8HD that cranks up every time I turn it on. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt but it is a lot of money to shell out for something that doesn't work. Will the firmware fix the issue? I don't know but I have confidence that Alesis will do what they can to make it right. If it doesn't work out then I'm out of my time on the phone with them and the painstaking chore of packing them back up. Let's hope for the best!

I have noticed that sometimes after playing for a few minutes some of the cymbals don't sound loud enough. I can even turn the slider down and the volume comes up! Talk about bugs. The ride is also extremely buggy. The bell has the same volume all of the time and lots of non triggers, the edge on the ride is extremely flaky and sometimes you can hit it hard 3 times in a row before it finally triggers on the 4th hit. The hi-hat is better but not nuanced enough.

In conclusion - I've spent a week tweaking, calling support, testing, setting, adjusting... and practically no time playing. I'm waiting for the patch, but if it doesn't cure these problems, I can't waste anymore time on this. I will probably return and go for the Roland. I was really excited at the kit configuration and obviously the price, but I want a drum set to PLAY not to test and debug.

  • I think there is hope everyone. I've spent several hours tweaking everything and can say that my kit is dialed in pretty well. I still get ghost triggers but haven't noticed them while playing, only when the kit is resting. And even then it seems to be only when I have the aux plugged in to my phone so I can play along. I also noticed it when trying to change instruments on pads. The menu kept jumping around randomly adding instruments to pads I didn't want them added to. Example is the snare. I was trying to choose a deeper sounding snare on the rock kit and the kick triggered and the menu went to symbols. I then had a kick on layer A and a symbol on kick layer B.

I can tell it's a game of adjustments now and will shine for a good patch that will cure things. My hi hat sounds much better as well. I'd give it a 90% score. I found setting the open and close really tight worked for me. Don't have the setting in front of me but think it was around 90 for open and about 80 for closed. I have a little space between the top hat and the spring, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Keep tweaking and see what works for your setup.

  • I too have pretty much eliminated the ghosting and Xtalk and made the hi-hats playable. If you guys want to save yourselves some time you can down load my SysEx trigger settings file from here:

  • Just wanted to chime in and hopefully give you guys some faith in your kits. Initially I set the hi hat up like a traditional hi hat and had all sorts of trouble. Once i actually followed the directions from Bill (My kit did not include a module user manual lol) I had my ghost triggers gone and hi hat dialed in less than 10 mins after reading his instructions. I only got the best results by turning the hi hat to where the 'Alesis' logo is pressed into the rubber facing me. Now my hi hat seems flawless. Hopefully the update makes the entire cymbal work, but other than that its working great. Unfortunately I think the guys having trouble may have just been unlucky and got a bad unit, but Alesis will surely replace it and when they do, you will love your kit!

  • I will try those settings, and eagerly waiting the firmware update. I have not been able to get the ride working well, does anyone have good settings for the ride cymbal?

  • One thing I found out years ago with the Alesis D4 was to NEVER have note chase ON when making adjustments to the triggers or voices. Use the curser and wheel and only do one pad or cymbal at a time and SAVE before moving on to the next task. I used this method when I set up my strike pro kit. My hat too was all over the place when I first turned it on, the only adjustment I made was to the pedal, 99 -71 works for me. I also backed off the tension of my high hats stand spring to compensate for the added Alesis spring. I only use the note chase when I want to see what sounds I have assigned to a kit's voices.

  • Instead of using a computer, can firmware and settings file updates be done via a usb key?

  • Now it won't turn on without going into update mode, so can't even try the OS update, which was successful. Coincidentally, I just got my return labels this afternoon. The hardware looks great, I just don't trust the software now or in the near future. Don't like the hi hat either, even if it were working correctly. Huge waste of time for me. Hoping others have much better luck.

  • Well, that would make sense because musicians don't tend to use Macs :-)

    • Oh, and yes, having played electric and electronic instruments for many years, the first thing I did after setting it up and getting all the weirdness was to check all the connections.
    • Okay, thanks for the update. Sorry about that.

I figured you had already done all the basic troubleshooting and then some, but always good to quintuple check. It did sound like something was not normal in that kit, maybe a bad contact on the HH control cable.

Anyway, thanks for sticking around here for a couple weeks trying to sort through it.

  • Nice that there was a troubleshooting OS X and not seeing the module topic. Too bad that you guys have the topic closed for questions and comments because, unfortunately my issue has nothing to do with not seeing the module.

I'm running MAC OSX 10.7.5. When I try to run the Updater application I get "Alesis Strike Updater quit unexpectedly". I can't even get the updater to open. Never mind not seeing the module.

    • No, but I do have a PC in another room. I will go that route. In the future you guys may want to consider stating OS system requirements. As this is the first time I couldn't run a minor app because of the OS.
    • I attempted to load the updates with a Mac Pro running 10.10.5 Yosemite. The OS file loaded fine BUT the trigger file would fail at 23% and the updater would quit unexpectedly. HMMM. I put the files on a old pc laptop running win7 and it updated fine. I did do the midi thing on the Mac by the way as I had used it to update my DM10 kit a while back and it worked fine with it. There is something wrong somewhere with the Mac files!!!!

  • Just updated. Hi hat is still not very good. It actually plays a bit better if I swing it around and play on the word Alesis. Ride not very good either but always has been bad. Plus I continue to have issues where sometimes cymbals are not loud enough. I can pull volume down and volume goes up. Like there is some sort of problem with the module, slider, or internal electronics.

    • Bill,

Apple software came to 23% on the trigger update and locked out. Windows 7 had no problem.
    • Glad the update worked!
