Struggling to Find Free Xpand!2 Software With Ableton Live

Hi

I have downloaded the free copy of Ableton Live and Xpan!2 that came with my wireless Vortex. I have installed the registration code that came with Ableton and the serial number for Xpand!2 that was in the My Products area on the Alesis website. I have followed links that I found on the internet on how to find folders for the plugins and have hit the rescan icon within Ableton Live. Unfortunately it does not appear to be finding the software. I can see the Air Music Technology folder and the folder for the instruments but unfortunately its not finding them. I`m using windows 10.

  • Hi Mike,

    Thanks for posting.

Are you using Windows or Mac?

Follow these steps below to tell Ableton how to scan for your plugin(s):

Note for Windows users only: If you have difficulty locating your plugin in your Plug-Ins category within Ableton Live 9 Lite, be sure Ableton Live 9 Lite is reading plugins from the correct location where your plugin is installed. To do this:
    1. Open the Preferences menu in Ableton Live 9 Lite MAC:

      Select Live > Preferences
or use the key command shortcut - [Command + comma]

      PC:
      Select Options > Preferences
or use the key command shortcut - [Control + comma]

    2. Choose the File/Folder tab.

      Ableton Vst Pref

    3. For Windows users: under the heading Plug-In Sources:, toggle On the button next to Use VST Plug-In Custom Folder.   Choose Browse next to VST Plug-In Custom Folder and browse to the appropriate plugin folder on your computer.

      AIR Xpand!2 Default Installation Locations: 32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\vstplugins
      64-bit: C:\Program Files\Steinberg\vstplugins

      Vortex VST Folder

For Mac users, simply toggle On the button next to Use VST Plug-in System Folder if it is not on already, and/or toggle On the box for Use Audio Units. Ableton will point automatically to the following locations to find your plugins:

(AU): Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > Components
(VST): Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > VST

    4. Within the Ableton Live 9 Lite Session View, under the Categories heading, choose Plug-Ins.

      vmini ableton setup3

    5. In the right-hand column next to Categories, double-click or click-and-drag Xpand!2 onto a MIDI track to load the plugin to your Ableton Live 9 Lite session.

      vmini ableton setup4
      ?

    6. The Xpand!2 virtual instrument interface will now open and you are good to go!

  • Hi Bill

Thank you for the indepth explanation, I am using Windows 10 my friend. Should it be the Air Technology folder that I am looking for? You have typed Steinberg in the sample. I can find the Air Technology and Xpan!2 folders but it still doesn`t place anything in the Plugins / Categories section when I press the Rescan tab.

    Cheers

    Mike

  • Are you using a 64-bit version of Ableton? Can you upload a screenshot of what your Ableton window looks like?

  • Hi Bill

I downloaded the 64 bit version at first but uninstalled it and downloaded the 32 bit version, as I read on a thread that someone had the same problem and were advised to install the 32 bit version. I will upload a pic of the program as soon as I get chance.

  • I’m happy
    Hi again Bill

I have managed to get Xpand2 up and running with Ableton. I downloaded it onto another computer running on XP, I took note of the folders that it was saving to and sure enough it was the same as the information that you provided. I uninstalled Xpand2 from my laptop and reinstalled it. When it came to the window that requested 32 bit or 64 bit and the download folders there were no folders to select. I created the folders in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\vstplugin and sure enough Ableton recognised the plugin when I ran the rescan.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Kind regards

    Mike
