Unstable Andromeda

My andromeda is acting unstable. When I turn a knob... the menu jumps to either the osc 2 view or the filter 2 view ... the filter frequency jumps, and the osc2 pitch jumps around. when flipping through patches in mix mode... I can't get it to stick on the main mix window long enough to even select patches. What do i Do?

  • Hello, sorry to hear your having an issue. Have you tried resetting to defaults?

  • I have tried that, as well as re-installing the firmware. Still gives me this issue where menus jump around because the osc 2 ,filter 2, and subosc 2 level parameters are unstable.

  • Hi Gennaro,
it's not a firmware problem but an hardware problem.

One month ago I've repaired an A6 Andromeda with the same problem of your synth (plus other problems moreover ......).

If you are interested in a efficient repair, contact me (I'm Itallian too)
    Ciao

  • max... what is your email address? I would love to see if you can help me out. Could you give me figures on how much the repair would cost and where i need to ship it so to get it fixed. It also has a couple unstable keys. I've had this synth for a long time and would love to get it up and running again smooth.

  • Gennaro, I live in Italy.

The cost of the repair it depends on what exactly it's the problem.
What I can tell you it's that for resolving the "jammin' knobs" problem (that you described on your first topic) on the Andromeda that I've repaired one month ago, the cost was 70 Euro.

Clearly if you live in Italy the shipping will not be a problem.
Otherwise the shipping could be very expensive and problematic (for reasons of weight and delicacy).

What do you mean by the term keys unstable?
Did you mean a mechanical problem or an issue of intonation?

I also own an Alesis Andromeda and I believe it's a really creative and versatile synthesizer with unmatched sonic possibilities; so I think it is really the case that you do repair it!

    My email address: flickino@libero.it

    Bye,
    Max

  • Ciao Mike :-)
It's a little hard to diagnosticate the problem in your A6 without looking it.

Maybe hardware (and in this case you need a good technician near you) or maybe "software".

In the second case you can try by yourself.
Sometimes the program data written on the eeprom goes "jammed" due to different factors (overvoltage spikes, RFI disturbances, a "memory write" interrupted by a shutdown, etc. etc.).
The restart of the synth after these factors may not be possible and the only remedy is to restore the memory.

You can perform this turning on the A6 while pressing the soft button 3.
Your A6's User Bank and the Global settings will be reinizialized (and all your User Patches will go away......!!!), but probably your device will work again.

I hope this help you to fix your problem.

    Bye,
    Max Borgia

  • Hi,

My Andromeda has the same problem as Gennaro's.

I bought it brand new from Germany in 2005 and it started having this problem a couple of months after i got it.

After a couple of years of trying to use it the way it was i decided to get it repaired and the repair person i took it told me that the problem was because of the potentiometers and he changed all of them and somehow the problem was solved.

By the way, the pots he used were not original a6 pots and they didnt fit in the original knobs so he damaged the original knobs to be able to fit the pots in.

My a6 worked without a problem after this rape but now i started having the same problem again.

There is nothing wrong with its sound but being able to use it is almost impossible. it jumps from page to page and changes parameters on its own.

I want to get it fully refurbished by someone who knows what he is doing and who will treat a6 kindly.

I dont know what causes this but i need a %100 functional a6 which is no different than a brand new one.

If anyone has any suggestions i d really appriciate it.

I also have the 'jumpy display' problem with my Andromeda A6. When it starts up, it usually is on a program or mix name display, but soon changes on its own to an edit page. I can push the 'program' (or 'mix') button to return it to the main name page, but it doesn't stay there and soon goes to an edit page. I am in Seattle, WA (USA) and took it to a repair shop who re-seated ribbon cables and then helped for a day, but then it went bad again. Any ideas on what to try?

  • I’m bitter
There are a few theories on knob jitter:

    - Cheap unsealed potentiometers, which get infiltrated with dust and grime, causing intermittent connections. Temporary solution: rotate the affected pot through its entire range a few times. Permanent solution: replace all pots with sealed equivalents. Their values are listed in the service manual (which you can find online), find a sealed pots with the same footprint.

    - RIbbon cables with inconsistent connections due to oxidation. Temporary solution: remove and reseat the ribbon cables. Permanent solution: replace all IDC headers with gold-plated pins to prevent oxidation, make new ribbon cables so that all connectors are brand new and non-oxidized.

The A6 was a great instrument developed by a small team of hardcore analog synth guys, which was then value-engineered by the corporate culture of Alesis and reduced to the cheapest possible components.

  • Another reader here with the same A6 problem mentioned here (settings jumping around on their own). Been doing this for years. Fortunately, it does eventually settle down with about 30 min. of use. It's not consistant. So I can still use it. But would be impossible to rely upon if I were a performer.
