Use Your Alesis HD24 with Windows 10

There is software that allows you to use your HD24 with newer versions of the Windows operating system such as Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10. This software replaces the Alesis FST Connect software. It is called HD24Tools and is available at

http://ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~mrjb...

I have been able to run HD24Tools on Windows 10 Professional, 64 bit. I am using it with the FirePort 1394 device to connect the HD24 caddy to my computer.

Although I am not sure this is necessary, I set up the application to run in Administrator mode with Windows XP SP3 compatibility.

Alesis' FSTConnect v1.05 software will only run on 32 bit operating systems and seems to be limited to Windows 7. HD24Tools, referenced above, removes those limitations.

There is a complete manual for HD24Tools in PDF and online formats that can also be viewed and downloaded at the web site mentioned above.

The author of HD24Tools did a great service for the HD24 community!

  • Windows 10 won't recognize the hard drive from my HD24XR unless the drive is formatted accordingly. If Windows won't recognize it, HD24tools doesn't detect it. Any suggestions?

  • Rollie-

The HD24 hard disk and your computer hard disk have completely different file formats, so they are not mutually compatible. However, HD24tools or FST/Connect software can create a Windows-compatible.WAV file on your computer from recordings on an HD24 hard disk.

If you send me an email, I would be happy to share a write-up of how to record and handle audio files produced on the Alesis HD24.

    • Thanks for the link. I did used the IDE - it was the only connection that would fit.
It fit perfectly (there is an outside cable key on the top center of the female connector), but it looked like there were more male connectors on the HD not used. The jumpers are off to the side next to the power connection.

Can you still buy IDE drives or is that the really big issue for the old HD24?
    • Yes, you can still buy IDE hard drives. Both Amazon and eBay have them both new and refurbished.

My HD24 has two 80GB IDE HDDs that I purchased in 2009. Still going strong. I think that the HD24 has been superseded by the USB and solid state recording devices. I wish that Alesis had replaced it with a more modern model say with solid state drives, but I guess they couldn't make a business case for it somehow.

  • What is the best way to get firewire if there is no port on my laptop? Will a hub work or an adaptor?

  • I used a Firewire adapter on a desktop PC. You might try a a Firewire to USB adapter for your laptop or some kind of converter cable.

  • The FirePort 1394 is the easiest way to get files off the HD24 disks, however others have used the ethernet (network) port as well, but it is much slower. The instructions for how to do that are in the HD24 manual, but I have no experience with it.

  • Hi Neil, I am glad to see that you are still in this forum helping. When I saw the top posts were three years ago, I was about to give up hopes, but here you are just days ago answering questions.
I have windows 7 Pro 64bit operating system, and have my HD24 connected via Ethernet, but the HD24 connect tools is unable to detect the HD24 even after setting up the app to working in Windows XP (service pack 3) compatible mode with administrator privilege. Any tips that might work?

  • Hi Charles- You are already running running HD24Tools application "As Administrator" and in compatibility mode. Those are the only two keys that I know of based on the HD24Tools website. Have you looked at the Ethernet file transfer instructions in the Alesis HD24 manual? There may be something there. I have always used the FirePort 1394 for file transfer, so I have never had to use the Ethernet port and really have no useful experience with it.

  • All,
Yesterday I followed Neil’s instructions...upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro (free). Then I followed the instructions on what he sent me on how to setup HD24Connect...and it worked like a charm.

    Thanks again Neil.

  • I also upgraded to windows 10 PRO for free. Followed the instructions, and still get the same message that that a valid drive has not been detected. Just about given up.

  • Charles-

I missed your comment that you were connecting by Ethernet to the HD24. Sorry!

Since you are connecting your computer to your Alesis HD24 via the Ethernet port, the use of HD24Tools will not help you. This is useful only for connecting via the FirePort 1394 to connect the disk caddy to your computer via a Firewire port.

Ethernet is more complex than using HD24Tools or Alesis' FST Connect software with the Fireport 1394.

My understanding is that file transfer via the HD24 Ethernet port happens by ftp. Take a look at Chapter 9 in the Alesis HD24 manual. This lays out the steps to put your HD24 in ftp server mode and transfer files using Internet Explorer or ftp software.
