What are the advantages of the Sample Pad 4 over the Sample Pad?

I'm looking to purchase a small sample pad that I can trigger loops and custom samples with and I'm trying to figure out what advantages the Sample Pad 4 would have over the Sample Pad. It looks like mostly aesthetic, so I need to know what would justify the $99 vs. $179 price difference. Thanks!!

  • Hello Bryan,

Thanks for the post. I can help! First, the SamplePad 4 is our newest Multipad system. I would recommend, if available, to purchase this one because you would benefit the latest updates, its newest features, technology and sounds. Both devices can trigger loops and samples but I would certainly go for the SamplePad 4.

  • Thanks for the reply! I do like the updated look of the SP4, but my biggest concern is going to be the ability to overlap or layer samples. Can I trigger a sample and then trigger a second without interrupting or canceling the first? Thanks!

  • Bryan, can you highlight some other differences? I am trying to decide between these two and just being newer and having velocity layers do not entice me to spend nearly double. I am sure there are other differences, but the Internet doesn't seem to know them yet. My searching has only yielded the layers. The 14MB limit is still the same and stereo isn't something I will use because my venue is mono. I am not arguing of trolling, I am legit going to buy one of these but I need help being convinced to spend the extra. thanks. -Doug

  • Hey Doug-- I can't really speak on which is better than the other, but I did end up opting for the SamplePad 4, mainly because 1) I could, 2) I like new gear and 3) I really wanted to be able to layer. If you don't think you'll benefit from the additional features (stereo and layers), then maybe go with the SP vs the SP4. It's sort of a bonus but I like the form factor and the lighted pads for dark venues....

  • So I think there is still an issue with polyphony... Sometimes when playing the top left and bottom left or top right and bottom right pads together one of the samples doesn't play.

Is this the case? This seems to be like, half the issue of the old samplepad which had this issue across all the pads.

I bought this one because I thought it would solve the issue with the old yet it still seems to be lingering.

    Am I imagining things?

  • Hello,

Some of you may be experiencing some crosstalk issues which is common for electronic drum systems. All of the pads can hear the strikes made to all of the other pads. Because of this, playing physically harder than necessary will increase the likelihood of unintended pads triggering. Also, depending on how low your velocity settings are, this could also contribute to some samples not triggering at all. You need to make sure that all of your custom samples are converted correctly. Here are some guides below to help you out. for both products.

Regarding Polyphonic, The SamplePad Pro and SamplePad 4 are polyphonic and can be striked at the same time. You'll have to increase the sensitivity on those pads that your hitting but essentially it will work for those two devices. However, keep in mind, with an increase in your sensitivity settings, you'll increase the chance of crosstalk. Refer to my crosstalk guide above for further information on that. Also, make sure you're on the latest firmware both devices too.

  • I haven't been able to duplicate your issue with my SP4, which kind of surprised me I guess. Maybe look at your pad settings like Chris said, but they shouldn't be canceling each other unless you have one mode set to STP.
