MultiMix Firewire and USB 2.0 Driver updates for Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks?

Will Alesis supply drivers for OS X 10.9 Mavericks for the MultiMix 8 FireWire? I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks on my iMac and the drivers do not appear to load.

  • I’m asking
Why are you (Alesis) doing this? Not making the drivers.

Is it because you don ́t have money to do it?
Is it because some "Big Boss" can ́t see it in the big picture?

I'm looking for Multimix 8/16 for a long time. but now i came to know that these are discontinued products. new multimix FX series r not good. because...
    1) these can't record simultaneous channels to different tracks, only 1 stereo channel.
    2) i think these r 16bit recorder (multimix 8/16 usb 2.0 were 24bit)
    3) veryy less effects (16 effects) than older ones (100effects).

Thats why i'm looking for Multimix 8/16 usb 2.0.

I'll wait for next better version which will be like Multimix 8/16 usb 2.0.

Won't buy Multimix 8/16 usb FX.

"With that in mind, I cannot guaranty any updates for these products - looks like some MultiMix models have been recently added."

With the above statement in mind I can guarantee I'll never buy an Alesis product again.

Get your act together... You were advertizing these products on your website as recently as July of this year. Not only are you not supporting your customers, you don't even offer a comparable product to replace the Multimix 2.0 mixers. Good luck selling that repackaged 10 year old technology.

  • Alesis needs to do some soul searching with regard to their Mac support. I've read some pretty strong comments on this thread. I like my MultiMix 8 Firewire, and I want to keep it running under Mavericks. However, I cannot consider purchasing another Alesis product even if they came out with the Mavericks drivers tomorrow. The way this is being handled is just a shame. It's inconsiderate of those who have recently purchased and invested in hardware that was obviously available during the transition to OS X 10.9.

I really hope someone high up at Alesis is listening, and that this isn't indicative of the corporate culture there. This approach of opaqueness appears to be Aleis' way of saving face or hedging their bets. I don't understand it, honestly. As someone else pointed out, getting the drivers to work on 10.9 cannot be that much effort, even forgetting that the drivers weren't ready for the actual OS release.

  • I’m confused
But i want to know, Is their any other mixer as Multimix 8/16 usb 2.0 which----

    1) records different simultaneous channels to different tracks (channel 1= vocal,.... channel 5= guitar.. channel 7-8= synth... etc)
    2) can record 24 bit, 96khz audio.
    3) have on-board reverb, delay effects.
    .
I want all these 3 in 1 MIXER.
Is it possible (like multimix 8/16 usb 2.0)????

    • veryy good idea.... thanks. :)
Can u suggest me some mixers with effects with direct outputs for each track.
8-12 channels will be enough for me.
    • I don't have model names off the top of my head. Generally a new mixer with dedicated direct out will be more than a mixer without. A brand new mixer with direct out and effects will start around $400. Good news is that there are a ton of used mixers out there. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a deal.

If you're set on something new and want it as cheap as possible there is a trick you can do on less expensive mixers. You need a mixer with "inserts" inserts are are typically used to add an external effect to just one track. Its more or less an effect loop. If you attach your interface to these and only plug in until you hear the first click they function as a direct out! Problem is that being plugged in half way can give an inconsistent signal. If you go this rout there are special patch cables and adapters available that let you plug in all the way and eliminate any inconsistency in the connection. A link to an adapter for that is below.

      http://www.avalive.com/Hosa/DOC-106/4...

A new mixer with effects and inserts will start between $175 & $200

      So all in all...

$250 - 8 channel interface which is expandable to 16 channel with adat.
Works out of the box with Mavericks. No driver install required.

$200 for a mixer that in all likelihood is much better than a noisy Alesis product.

$150 rack mount hard case for portability.

      $600 for everything.
I should have gone this rout in the first place. :)

  • Damn! I just migrated to Mavericks after purchasing the latest full version of Cubase. My mixer drivers weren't a consideration - so now what?!?! Come on Alesis! I've been generally happy with the straight forward design and decent sound of the Multimix 8 USB 2 - but why piss off your customers? Like others, this will redirect my music funds to other companies.

Well, guess we weren't good enough for Santa to drop shiny updated USB drivers for Multimix products under our tree. I'd go to other gear, but I guess it's cheaper to just reinstall OS X 10.8 from scratch and rebuild the Mac. Fortunately, it's only used for recording, so not a huge loss. New Year's eve, bottle of brew and a USB drive here I come.

    Alesis Support,

Here is an idea: Guarantee you are going to support a product with drivers for (x) number of years and you can keep this major outlast from happening in the future. I haven't upgraded to Mavericks 10.9, because I learned my lesson about driver releases a few years back.

I have been an Alesis customer for some time (Firewire 410, DM10 Studio Kit, Multimix 16 USB 2.0, numerous keyboards).

I think Alesis should release one more driver update and notify users this is the last driver update for products. If you are upfront with customers they are less likely to be upset.

Recapping: To make your customers happy do these three things:

    1. Guarantee drivers for (x) number of years. I think 7 to 8 years would be nice, 10 years would be the best.

    2. Once you are done supporting a product, make a note on the product page that Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.8 are the LAST SUPPORTED DRIVERS.

    3. You could possibly have an add on service where customers could pay for a driver update after the (x) guaranteed number of years. I would pay $25 for a driver update to OS X 10.9 and it would be an additional source of revenue for Alesis. You can keep your customers happy this way. I love my MultiMix 16 USB 2.0, which I bought new for $500 and I'm not ready to part with this mixer yet.

  • Michael, I'm afraid it's no use trying to get Alesis to grasp some degree of common sense. Forcing the customers of Alesis to move on to buying gear from the competition is certainly not in the neighbourhood of common sense. Your suggestion, however, is very reasonable! Another suggestion would be for Alesis to release the source code of the drivers. That would reduce Alesis's income, compared to your idea, but maybe that will suit Alesis's business policy better?

Presonus Studio Live looks really good... :)

I once bought a MulitMix 4. I was satisfied and I bought a MulitMix 8 USB2 to get multi tracking to garageband. I always recommanded Alesis Mixers to other bands for recording sessions. Bands do have a network: without supporting current operating-systems, I can not buy and recommend Alesis anymore.

Or just make the driver open source!

  • Following this annoyance with Alesis, I went out and purchased the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. Immediately it made me appreciate the simplicity of the Multimix, with the ability to manually control the levels (versus some software control). As frustrated as I am with Alesis, gotta say, the Focusrite isn't up and running smoothly either. The difference is that they are working on the drivers . With limited time to work in the studio, we need this stuff to WORK, so we can focus on the recording. Hundreds of dollars, countless hours, massive frustrations, and still no music. Grrr.

    • Thanks. Oddly, that made things worse with complete freezing/no sound/constant reboots required, etc. Possibly due to a conflict with other USB 2 devices. Reinstalled MixConsole and isolated the issue to 96kHz recording (with normal Focusrite drivers) supporting the theory. Probably best for another forum but the Alesis had worked prior to my upgrade with the same devices. Will continue troubleshooting by removing all nonessential devices before the downgrade hassle. WRT possible future Multimix drivers - too late guys, many of us have moved on from Alesis when it was suggested that support would not be provided.
    • How about Alesis also offering an upgraded version of the Multimix 8?

Hardware becomes obsolete and so does the support for it - simple as.

Everything here is working fine for me (Multimix 16 USB2, Logic X on 10.8.5) all because I didn't jump the gun and upgrade to Mavericks, and nor will I anytime soon.

There's absolutely NO guarantee that ANY io device you buy today will work tomorrow.

Bahaha! You need to lay off the Kronik.
Hardware that could be purchased new when mavericks was announced shouldn't be obsolete. Since you're a defender of Alesis, why don't you explain to us what has made our hardware obsolete? As far as Alesis interfaces go, these were and are the top of their line. It's not as if these products have been replaced by something better. If you want a pat on the back for not upgrading your OS I don't think you're going to find it here.

It appears to me that Alesis as a whole is soon to be obsolete. Clearly there are better alternatives when it comes to professionalism and customer service.

  • I am checking in to see how everybody is doing re: the no support of Mavericks for legacy products that Alesis is currently upholding. I see that nothing has changed. Here are some lessons I have learned from this:
    1. Check to see if there will be support before a major system software upgrade.
    2. Repeat step 1. :-)
    3. If there is no support of your hardware from the company, move on.
    4. Check software specs. I made the mistake of not doing that with IK Multimedia regarding Sampletank 2. Thank God for free (legal) and cheap 32 bit bridge solutions.
    5. Re: Focusrite 18i8 issues—you can run the unit in class compliant mode and still use the mixing panel. This cleared up any problems that I had with it and (dare I say it) it sounds better and cleaner than my Multimix 8 USB legacy board.
    5. That being said, I will use the Multimix as a sub mixer for my other legacy products (Korg 01/W and Emu Proteus).

For those who refuse to believe that their legacy products are done re: USB and FireWire connectivity, well....time to believe it. It's important to keep working and creating music. Stay with the old 10.8.5 operating system, if you need to, or move on if you go to Mavericks (like I had to).
Oh, and here is a point of interest—Roland has recently updated my Boss GT-10 pedalboard's USB capability to Mavericks, even though the GT-100 has replaced it. Now that's a company that I can stand behind.

    • J. Sandeen, can you explain how Alesis ignores Legacy driver updates for Mavericks with absolutely no explanation to the customer database and yet someone such as Santi Mayoral is able to at least come up with a workaround that gets my Multimix 8 up and running on USB with Logic Pro X in 10.9.1.? Alesis should hire Santi to update the drivers. Again, I know that you are the messenger, so I know that this isn't your fault.

  • This is atrocious. I bought this product brand new, less than a year ago. It is still in the warranty period. You cannot simply stop supporting a product the second you stop selling it, you have to support the people who paid good money for a product that they thought would last them years. Seven years of support from the date of discontinuation is a minimum for a musical product. I was recently forced to purchase a new Mac. Running Mavericks is my only option. This product was promised to run on Mac and was promised to work for at least a year, but now it is just an expensive brick. I will be calling for a full refund if there is no new driver released.

    • Daniel, it's hard to tell. I am a one person operation and so far, I have been able to record multiple tracks without issues. I haven't needed to try the MIDI or digital in because I use my guitar controller via USB, so I could not vouch for the MIDI in and out jacks working in compliant mode, but I will check. As the unit is still new to me, I don't know everything yet. An update to the mixer control panel took care of it crashing when I had Logic Pro X running. I can only say that it has done everything I have needed it to do and it sounds great.
    • Hi J Sandeen, I have a question because I too am an ALESIS buyer of your devices and remembered my hesitation to pulling the trigger on my IOS DOCK for my ipad 2 because EVERYWHERE I LQQKED on google people were having issues with stuck midi notes and freezes on the macs with iOS docked iPads and the only reason I ended up buying it and putting it on my credit card was because I had finally found on a forum someone who posted an obscure link that was on your website and not obvious in any way no alerts on the page to inform users "HEY IPAD USERS HERE IS AN UPDATED VERSION FOR IOS DOCK ISSUES" it was only because i stumbled on to it on some other forum and that's the reason I haven't upgraded my ipad to ios7 because people are still having issues and I recently bought a new ipad an now my ioDock is useless is there a new updated version you are coming out with??? Oh and to get back on topic I just ordered the new MAC PRO TOWER (garbage can black) and that is coming with Mavericks so I guess I'm SOL huh?? PLEASE HELP!!!

We have been.... For a while now.... Instead of wasting more of our time with a "stay tuned" announcement, (A possible stay tuned for nothing) why not simply tell us? Is there going to be a driver update or not?

As the manufacturer of the product that should be a simple question to answer. So which is it? Yes or no.

Don't give us the generic, "No plans at this time, but could be soon" bullshit. We've heard that already, and frankly it makes you guys come across as even bigger jackasses.

This response was made close to an hour after your post. I'm sure many of us here will be surprised if you respond with a competent answer within the month.
    • view 1 more comment
    • Do you know what is an even more unhelpful statement?

"A product being discontinued does not mean it will never get a driver update.
Please stay tuned for any update announcements. "

How could I not be thrilled with the above statement? Turns out I might have useful hardware, could be a useful interface or paperweight. "Stay tuned." Suppose I'd like to record a live performance this summer. Do I need to get new hardware? Well fiddlesticks I just don't know? Guess I'll, "Stay Tuned"

I know customers service pretty well. I do it daily, in fact I've done a little here. Why don't you read my comments from a week or so ago. I had quite a discussion with some others here on possible solutions/alternatives to this issue.

Lets not confuse the pro audio industry with the clowns at inMusic. If you're grateful for poor excuses and the sidestepping of simple questions, I can understand why you're a satisfied customer. Most of us will treat Alesis as well as they've treated us. If that means the new owners think we're dicks, there's probably a lesson to be learned.
    • John, I don't think that J Sandeen is at fault here at all. He is obviously doing his job to the best of his ability. His answer, while competent, is more of the same that has been going on for awhile. The right thing for Alesis to do is to come on the forum and be straight with their customers. When I called a tech support rep and asked him if there would be support for these legacy products, he said no. I don't know how long you have been checking out the posts on this forum, but if you start from BoisyP 's original question and read on, you will understand why Joseph and others are pissed and why others like myself had to move on. People can't "stay tuned" and not work. I hope they do update, but I am not dependent on it like other people seem to be. And the person who owns the company should not take it personally that people are angry about the lack support they are getting. That should not have a bearing on whether or not he should be inspired to pay for updates.

    Hello Again J Sandeen;

Your response makes me feel hopeful.

I love my IO|26 very much and I get really sad at the thought that I won't be able to use it anymore. I can't find anything else that combines inserts, SMUX and a portable form factor.

I notice that TC Electronic's Studio Konnect also doesn't work with Mavericks.

So, as a software engineer, I imagine the underlying problem is related to the Dice chipset that TC Electronic produces and is used in Alesis and TC Electronic and other Firewire Audio Products.

I so, so, so hope support for this will come to pass.

I have a Focusrite Saffire 56 in my ebay watch list because there drivers are working in mavericks, but i don't want to make the change to something that i *didn't* *want* when i bought my IO|26.

tnx to you and your team!

I'm amazed as to why downgrading the operating system is an acceptable solution. Unlike several other folks who have posted this option, I don't have a dedicated MAC book connected to the Multimix. Considering the impact analysis required for all other functions on the MAC book, the level of effort for me to downgrade considerable.

Hi J Sandeen, I have a question because I too am an ALESIS buyer of your devices and remembered my hesitation to pulling the trigger on my IOS DOCK for my ipad 2 because EVERYWHERE I LQQKED on google people were having issues with stuck midi notes and freezes on the macs with iOS docked iPads and the only reason I ended up buying it and putting it on my credit card was because I had finally found on a forum someone who posted an obscure link that was on your website and not obvious in any way no alerts on the page to inform users "HEY IPAD USERS HERE IS AN UPDATED VERSION FOR IOS DOCK ISSUES" it was only because i stumbled on to it on some other forum and that's the reason I haven't upgraded my ipad to ios7 because people are still having issues and I recently bought a new ipad an now my ioDock is useless is there a new updated version you are coming out with??? Oh and to get back on topic I just ordered the new MAC PRO TOWER (garbage can black) and that is coming with Mavericks so I guess I'm SOL huh?? PLEASE HELP!!!

  • So...it's clear that there will be no update. However, the Multimix is still a very capable mixer for sub mixing. And that is its function in my studio. It is plugged into channel 7 and 8 of my Focusrite 18i8. I use it to submit my vintage gear (Korg O1/W, Alesis HR-16, Yamaha QY70, and Proteus Module). All's well that ends well. :-). No drivers doesn't mean no function.

I sold my Alesis Multimix 16 USB 2.0 and I'm very happy. Never again!

Kuba, I don't blame you one bit. Glad you were able to sell it.

Santi Mayoral's fix worked for me. My MultiMix USB 2.0 is working fine on Mavericks.

  • Any idea about this "hack" for working with the firewire version?
    • view 1 more comment
    • I understand that stability might be an issue, but the hack is working and this makes me feel better about keeping my Multimix 8 as a spare auxiliary mixer. My question is this—if a hack like this can work, why won't Alesis update the drivers? The company is acting very unprofessional in this regard.
    • Will I actually get an answer to my above question or will the evasive attitude continue? I am considering the new iO Dock, so professionalism from Alesis is an important consideration.

  • I can install the 2.1.18 drivers using Santi's hack, but unfortunately my Multimix 8 USB 2.0 still does not work at all. I guess you guys use Logic?
My Multimix shows up in Audio Midi Setup / Audio Devices, but it cannot be selected as an input/output and none of my applications have sound. I've temporarily moved back to using an old Tascam US-144 from 2007, which got Mavericks drivers two months ago.

    • I ́m able to record multichannels. Thank you again Santi. :) Alesis you really suck this time.
    • Glad, Santi found the solution too :)
I installed the drivers using pacifist: Was happy to see my Multimix 8 USB 2.0 was detected by the app, but the same issue. No chance to select it.

Don't know wether this works for you, but I removed all of the other sound devices
      1. unplugged webcam and microphone
      2. i moved the kext-file of my sound card from System/Library/Extensions to the desktop and deleted the original file (ALWAYS backup your kext files!)
      3. repaired permissions using kext utility
      4. reboot
      5. the Multimix is automatically selected and works!

Can't adjust volumes in Audio Midi Setup or preferences though, but that's a rather small issue since i control it with the mixer itself.

But be careful when messing with your system!
I'm on a hackintosh, so i knew what i installed to make audio work in the first place. I have no clue wether it's possible like that on a "real" mac, since i don't know what the kext file for the internal audio hardware includes.

      Hope this helps nonetheless :)

      EDIT:
This appears not to be the best solution.. i mean it kinda works but as soon any audio device connects (e.g. an airplay speaker) the multimix is deselected and you're sitting there with the old problem again.
      Anybody found another solution?

I do NOT believe this!!!! My MultiMix 8 is USB savvy again!!!! Santi Mayoral, you ARE a GENIUS!!! How did you find a workaround like this? More important, why didn't the company?? Now, I am not replacing my Focusrite for any reason!! It is cleaner sounding. But it's nice to have an option. I will test it some more, but Logic Pro recognized it completely.

    Hi, J Sandeen.

I keep on investigating to help all the people suffering this problem caused by Alesis.

As the driver (2.1.18) is working again for many of us using Logic Pro, I guess there is no need to do any change in the code. Mavericks hasn't changed the way of working with audio (or it wouldn't be working)

The only problem is the "digital sign" that doesn't allow to use the device as a "global choice". So, if this is correct, you only have to rebuild the code with a new "code signature" valid for Mavericks. I'm I right?

If this is the case, I think it would be very easy for you to do it and I can't understand the lack of support.

Please, we all encourage you to do it.

I can hear the collective chanting of..."SANTI...! SANTI...! SANTI...! SANTI...!" You have made many of us happy.

Alesis? I presume you will be sending Santi Mayoral a brand new MultiMix 10 Wireless? Or maybe a DM10 Studio Kit?

Our school is planning a large purchase for our Multi-Media Program and WAS going with Alesis products but this recent "failure" with customer service has put a poor taste in our mouth.

    Thanks again Santi Mayoral!

  • I’m really f***ed off !
Is this how Alesis works on driver updates... hacking advice from the community ...?!

UNBELIEAVABLE poor customer service and UNPROFESSIONAL.

If you are actually working on OSX 10.9 updates there must be a plan with timescales ? So what is the plan please ?

If you can't answer that question it must mean you don't have a plan.

If you don't have a plan just say so please.

My Alesis products stuff will be consigned to local landfill and I'll never buy another Alesis product of any kind as a result of your complete lack of meaningful communication.

Why don't you open the source code so anyone can continue developing drivers? Isn't there any interest from Alesis to do so? Open Source!

Better yet, ask this question: Why aren't the higher ups (executives) at Alesis responding to this forum? It is clearly not a priority for InMusic.
