AllMusic: Back in Blue

Hello dedicated friends of AllMusic,
Based on your feedback and the growing need for a better mobile experience we've been making some changes to AllMusic. The new features are available for you in beta if you want to check them out.

http://beta.allmusic.com

New Look and Feel
We wanted to give AllMusic a cleaner look, and move away from some of the dominant white spaces that many users talked to us about. We've returned to the familiar AllMusic blue color, developed a sharp new logo, narrowed the page width a bit for users with smaller browsers and really tried to lay out the pages in ways that offered the information cleanly with a modern presentation.

The Site Works on Your Phone
Whether you're visiting us from your computer or smartphone, our new design is made to fit your current screen size. Now you can look to AllMusic.com any time you need to get music info on the go.

Lyrics
Does your buddy think the lyrics to Bad Moon Rising were "There's a bathroom on the right"? AllMusic can settle that debate – we're now offering lyrics on our song pages.

Overview Pages
Now when you land on an artist page or a genre page, AllMusic offers an overview of selected albums and related artists to explore, giving a feel for what that band, musician or musical style is all about at a glance.

"All" View in Artist Discographies
Wish you could view ALL of an artist's recordings? Now you can, using our "All" view in the discography tab. Singles, EPs, Compilations and Videos will all be displayed in one complete list.

More Descriptive New Releases Page
We've added our headline reviews to all albums in the Featured New Releases page, giving you more info about which albums to check out each week.

More Places for Album Ratings and User Ratings
Get the average user rating in many places.

Recording Dates for Albums
Whenever possible, we're displaying the dates that an album was recorded.

It's still a work in progress, but please take a look and let us know what you think here on our GetSatisfaction page or by filling out our site feedback survey.

Thanks as always,
Your Friends at AllMusic

I really like the way the new site looks. However ... the artist pages seem much less user friendly. Previously, I could go to an artist page and see bio and discography on an overview page without any more clicking. Now, looking at bio or discography requires multiple additional clicks once you arrive at the artist page, which means more time, more hassle and less convenience.

Hi Caleb,
We had many users in this thread indicating that they would prefer a stand-alone discography tab so we worked that into the new design.

https://getsatisfaction.com/allmusic/...

I can certainly see it both ways, and we will certainly have folks on both sides of the fence on this one.

For what it's worth, I like how this plays out on the new mobile site, with the stacked tabs that pull down and retract. Big improvement over the old site. I just wish the desktop experience was similarly convenient instead of becoming more tedious to use.

Graphics for album ratings are enclosed in scolling windows that are slightly too small, thus always scrolling. Chrome/Vista

We'll take a look Tim. Thanks for the tip. Are you zoomed out or zoomed in on Chrome? Or do you have a plug-in or add-on that might cause this?

If you could send a screenshot that would be terrific.

Works great on my desktop with Chrome. My iPhone (3G) not good at all. On an artist page, I get a large black space between the photo and the overview text, and when I click a tab (like Discography), nothing seems to happen.

(And of course, anything that needs Java leaves out the "Smart"phone as well.)

Just for the record, the only thing I would've wished for is larger text on the my little phone screen. Everything else was fine, but I'm not a super-picky user, just have aging eyes...

Hi David,
Are you using iOS 6? or iOS 5?

iOS 6.1.3
(Three year old 3G iPhone...not sure how many Allmusic users still have one of those, but hey you never know.)
p.s. Just tried rebooting the phone but still no luck.
p.p.s. I'll take AMG in whatever form it's provided. Your website has been an invaluable service to me for MANY years and will continue to be, even if I just have to stick with my laptop/desktop versions.
Thanks!

Much better than before! I only just got on, so I can't offer a fully knowledgeable opinion.

I like that the discography and biography are separated. Some of these artists have looong biographies and I sometimes needed to read them while I was looking for albums. I was constantly scrolling up and down, collapsing and uncollapsing. When I did a search on the page it was always going to words hidden in the collapsed biography and I couldn't tell where the cursor had gone. Very frustrating.

I like the filter on the discography page. I frequently flipped between albums and compilations and that was alright, but being able to combine them at will is better. Sometimes albums get misfiled and this will make them easier to find. If I could get albums and EPs BUT NOT compilations on demand it might be perfect. Some artists have over 100 compilations and they really make single albums hard to find.

So far, that annoying black box hasn't popped up when I'm dragging my mouse around the discography page. That was one of my primary complaints and I felt that I was summarily dismissed when I complained.

The mail said that you're including recording dates when possible. It neglects to mention that this is a feature you removed previously. Nevertheless, it is appreciated.

I was excited when the performer I used as a test showed several entries under "Member Of". I thought you'd improved that information because it wasn't very good. Unfortunately, nothing has actually changed. That area is sorely lacking. I know Rovi execs are making cash hand over fist because I see they've licensed their data to thousands of websites. It's about time they unclenched their ass and hired more people for research and corrections. They don't realize the number of music fans that use the site for research and aren't interested in what video has become a meme.

You've provided more entries per page under the "Songs" tab it it goes to eleven (very clever) rather than four. Much appreciated. I was crawling through the listings yesterday for someone who had over 3,560 songs listed. It took a very long time at 20 per page. This is a HUGE improvement! I was disappointed when the extension provided by the last redesign was cut back a few weeks later.

So the initial impression is that it is much better than the previous redesign and possibly better than the version that we all knew and loved. But going back to a previous point, the discographies and related information need to be more accurate and more complete. I would not be exaggerating if I said that I see twenty-five errors every day. Corrections aren't made or acknowledged and errors occur often enough that it's tedious to keep submitting corrections.

Zac and all of the other moderators for this feedback section should get a large raise. The previous redesign was poorly thought out and executed and regular users of the site remain angry about it. Most of the answers that I've received in the feedback section have been even-tempered, knowledgeable and well written.

Can you share AMG's vision for the Overview page for each artist? It appears to be an excuse to put up some pretty pictures.

Album Highlights are largely covered by the discography section.

Related Artists are covered more thoroughly under the Related tab.

Artists Moods and Artists Themes (shouldn't there be an apostrophe in both?). Is that important to anyone really? It's an excellent idea in theory and impractical in the real world. There's so much contrasting material under each category as to render the whole thing useless.

Why not scrap the artist overview and make Biography the landing page? Or my preference, the Discography. I'd bet that's most people's primary destination.

Hi Andy,
I'll let Zac reply more in depth, but the concept for the overview is to give a variety of general information about the artist at a glance. As you pointed out, you can further explore the various areas, such as album highlights and related artists, by clicking through.

Going back to something Zac mentioned above, we split the bio and discog info over two separate tabs after receiving a lot of feedback asking for those elements to appear in stand-alone areas.

Thanks!

Hi Andy,
The purpose of the Artist Overview page is to give a quick snapshot of what that artist represents.

If someone asked me "What can you tell me about Gram Parsons?" I would not go into a long informative narrative starting with his birth or list his album releases in order, I would say "He was a singer/songwriter in the late '60s/early '70s who helped usher in Country-rock. He had some great albums like GP and Return of the Grevious Angel, and he sang with Emmylou Harris."

Since we can't talk to each user individually, we can now point them to an overview that points out some albums that are significant, a short but concise statement about who that artist is, some of the other musicians and bands that the artist is similar to or had worked with.

A user just learning about an artist they have heard about is now given a brief overview of what the musician is all about, and has several jumping-off points to dig deeper.

We know many folks use AllMusic for research purposes, but other folks use the site to poke around, explore and discover new artists. We're hoping the site can provide both experiences.

I really liked the old artist overview page. I could see everything at a glance. I loved that an artist search landed on the overview page where i could see bio & discography together.

The new overview page is awful and just means lots of extra clicks/page loading to see bio & discography

It seems the site is optimized for the iPad only in landscape mode.

That is correct.
We have plans for getting the content to respond properly in portrait mode as a later installment, but for now we are supporting Landscape mode as our initial rollout.

Here's another cool thing:
Beta offers RSS teasers of AllMusic Blog content. Look for the RSS icon in the upper right of any page under http://beta.allmusic.com. If you add the RSS feed on beta, it'll carry over for you once the beta site is completed and rolls out to allmusic.com proper.

Enjoy!

I have to say I really hate having to click and wait to see the discography. I really do think this is the main thing people are looking for, so it's silly to bury it like this. The current band overview page doesn't give you anything, except big pictures of a handful of album covers (no dates, no ratings) and six random similar artists. That's just... useless. The old site enables you to answer the Gram Parsons question perfectly well, the new one just keeps you from learning anything else. The first thing I'd like to know is whether Gram Parsons has any highly-rated albums, and when they came out. Next, I'd like to see a list of similar artists, influences and followers, instead of six random ones. I mean, how often do you think people will visit this page without subsequently clicking 'Discography'? Very rarely, I guess.

I agree 100% with tim, the previous poster. Please keep the current main artist page as it is at the moment, with bio & discog. immediately viewable without any need to click through to other pages.

Chrysta, asking users to add our problems and ideas to a single thread will make it too lengthy to organize. The thread will divert into too many tangential subjects, and you guys won't be able to track the status of individual problems! I also suggest closing this thread.

We can handle it. Thanks for the suggestion though.
