AllMusic: New Features and Design

  • Updated 6 years ago
Based on your feedback and the growing need for a better mobile experience we've been making some changes to AllMusic. The new features were out in beta for the past month, we've gathered some feedback, squashed some bugs and now the new features are available on our site you want to check them out.

http://www.allmusic.com

AllMusic: Back in Blue

New Look and Feel
We wanted to give AllMusic a cleaner look, and move away from some of the dominant white spaces that many users talked to us about. We've returned to the familiar AllMusic blue color, developed a sharp new logo, narrowed the page width a bit for users with smaller browsers and really tried to lay out the pages in ways that offered the information cleanly with a modern presentation.

The Site Works on Your Phone
Whether you're visiting us from your computer or smartphone, our new design is made to fit your current screen size. Now you can look to AllMusic.com any time you need to get music info on the go.

Lyrics
Does your buddy think the lyrics to Bad Moon Rising were "There's a bathroom on the right"? AllMusic can settle that debate – we're now offering lyrics on our song pages.

"All" View in Artist Discographies
Wish you could view ALL of an artist's recordings? Now you can, using our "All" view in the discography tab. Singles, EPs, Compilations and Videos will all be displayed in one complete list.

Overview Pages
Now when you land on an artist page or a genre page, AllMusic offers an overview of selected albums and related artists to explore, giving a feel for what that band, musician or musical style is all about at a glance.

Recording Dates for Albums
Whenever possible, we're displaying the dates that an album was recorded.

More Descriptive New Releases Page
We've added our headline reviews and an "Editors' Choice" flag to albums in the Featured New Releases page, giving you more info about which albums to check out each week.

Plus an RSS feed for our Blog, more places for album ratings and user ratings, being able to rate albums from our hover-over tooltip, a Google+ page, and many more tweaks and speed improvements to get the pages to load faster.

Please take a look and let us know what you think here on our GetSatisfaction page or by filling out our site feedback survey.

Thanks as always,
Your Friends at AllMusic

For starters I want to ALWAYS be able to sort albums in a list by highest score, this is probably one of my top 5 reasons for even using allmusic, this function is completely removed in the "related albums" page and it has become harder/slower to do it in "genres" sections too.

Also the related artists page have been dumbed down I cant find "influenced by" or "followers" anymore.

can't sort by ANYTHING! anymore. Compilations do not appear. In fact, none of the other filters work for me. Very very very disappointed.

Hi A,
You can sort albums by Year, Album, Label, AllMusic Rating or User Rating by clicking the category name under the discography.

Influenced By and Followers are still under the Related tab: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/miles-...

I hope that points you in the right direction. Thanks.

Alright seems like I was in the wrong about influenced/followers, they are still there, which is good.

As I mentioned, this function is not removed on the music categories' pages but it has become more cumbersome and frustrating to get to it because now it takes an additional numbers of "clicks".

This "redesign" is a perfect example how one can create a perfect mess. The navigation is pure horror for someone who got yoused to a more or less userfriendly website. I have no idea for what reason you changed the whole layout but it looks as someone was on bad drugs.

Here are the things that'd make the site usable for me again:
-Combine "biography"," overview" and "discography" into one page.
-Combine similar albums and reviews into one page again.
-Fill the gratuitous amounts of empty space everywhere on the site.
-Make the combined biography/discography page default.
-Stop pushing pitchfork-esque guides and picks.

July 2013 redesign worse than last year's.

all music's design keeps getting worse. this looks like something elementary school kids would create. an attempt at cool and modern instead of aesthetically pleasing and focused on functionality.

however, the favicon is an improvement.

Agreed. Allmusic (AMG) (Rovi) just doesn't want the tried and true website they once had back before all the changes and uproar. They claim the technology was out of date. I say to them, that is just a nimble excuse.

Restoring the original site as an option for those who would like to use it has been deemed by Rovi (Zac) as not technically viable. That's not true. It IS possible, but ROVI denies and denies.

Since the other thread appears to be dead, and I never got a response, I reiterate: I have to say I really hate having to click and wait to see the discography. I really do think this is the main thing people are looking for, so it's silly to bury it like this. The current band overview page doesn't give you anything, except big pictures of a handful of album covers (no dates, no ratings) and six random similar artists. That's just... useless. The old site enables you to answer the Gram Parsons question perfectly well, the new one just keeps you from learning anything else. The first thing I'd like to know is whether Gram Parsons has any highly-rated albums, and when they came out. Next, I'd like to see a list of similar artists, influences and followers, instead of six random ones. I mean, how often do you think people will visit this page without subsequently clicking 'Discography'? Very rarely, I guess.

Also, although I'm really happy with the function to filter for specific ratings, the advanced search doesn't seem to work (yet).

Go back to what Allmusic was 3 years ago. Where I can search an artist and find EVERY song they recorded. More song reviews would help too. Add some staff for this. And I don't wish to find an album I like, do not have, and there is no preview.

The original change 2 years ago (?) is what so many users and myself, find offensive, and the new so called technical improvements, useless.

You had a great service here, and went and fixed that which was not broken.

Complicated website changes.

Dear Sirs,

You've done it again, without any warning!

When I discovered AllMusic several years ago, it was a simple, comprehensive catalogue. Now, I'm puzzled by the plethora of irrelevant pictures and lack of 'How to find' suggestions. All I want to do is find album info. about an artist.

Examples. I wanted to look up Koko Taylor's albums, but:

1. It took me some time to find where to enter her name.
The 'Search' bar is black, on a black background.

2. When I clicked on 'artist' and 'discography', and tried to filter
by compilations, nothing happened. Similarly with DVDs and
videos filter.

It took me some time to work out your last set of changes, and it looks like I shall have to do the same again.

Yours, etc.

M. Trevis

PS I now find, at the end of this process, that I have to open an account to let you know what I think.

Really, really don't like the new page design. It's cold and uninviting. Bring back the openness and welcoming look that you had before. If you are trying to drive people away from the site, this new look is the way to achieve it.

How do I sort the albums in the "similar albums" page by highest score and in a list instead of a random mess of album covers? Here for example: http://www.allmusic.com/album/channel...

This was possible before the recent change.

Hi Fritz,
The site should work all the way back to IE7. Do you have specific examples of what is failing in IE8? I am testing in IE10, and using their compatibility mode to go backwards through older browsers, I am able to use the site?

What's not working for you?

1. When typing in a name in the Search box, no suggested names come up, like it did before.

2. Cover art doesn't automatically appear to the left of the album names in the discography listing.

3. Clicking on the sort feature for "Compilations" "Singles" or "All" doesn't work.

4. When trying to play a sample by clicking by the left of the song name, a new page appears with a "Quick Time" symbol, instead of the song just playing.

Do you possibly have Javascript disabled in IE8? Those kinds of things are what I see when I toggle Javascript off.

Could you take a look at this site in IE8 and let us know what details it gives?

If you'd rather just e-mail the info, please send it to support [at] allmusic [dot] com.

Thanks for helping with this.

Sorry you feel that way Wolf.

The large cover images should still be there, same as before, simply by clicking on the cover image on an album page.

All of the other detailed info like our reviews, biographies, discographies and all of the other things that were available on AllMusic should still be there as well.

Ok, if you're gonna update the site's aesthetics at least maintain the existing features:

The audio samples used to have navigability; we could skip ahead if it sounded like a song's introduction, for example.

Clicking a subsequent track's sample WOULD discontinue the previous playing sample, and lent to a very fluid browsing experience. Now that is gone.

This would help if the features return.

Complaining is fine, but nobody is helped by just saying that the redesign sucks. I hated last year's redesign and posted several rants. Most of them were fixed in this new redesign and some of the fixes were things that people are complaining about today.

When you go all emo, posting vague and incomplete sentences, I win. It's your turn to win them back. Then I get to complain again. Complaining can be fun.

I love to be unhappy,
I live to be in pain.
When days are golden sunshine,
I'm looking for the rain.
I love to have a headache,
I'm happy with a cold.
I'm looking for a problem --
Why wait until I'm old?
They say that no one's happy
With anything they've got.
And just when things seem wonderful
You think of how it's not.
And so when fortune's smiling
On the ladder to success,
If you set your mind to thinking,
You can really make your life a mess.
I always send my steak back,
My life is overdone.
I have to be quite careful
That I don't have any fun.
And even when I'm tapping,
Happy hoofing to the beat,
I know I'll get thick ankles
And ugly muscles in my feet.

It's a song from the Live In New York CD by Gilda Radner http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-fr...

I meant to give credit when I posted it but forgot. It's a recording from her 1979 stage show after she left Saturday Night Live. It's credited to Gilda Radner/Paul Shaffer. And it's much more delightful as sung by Gilda than any reading you could give it in your head. There's a tap dance in the middle but I didn't know how to commit that to words.

Here's the video

Hi, Allmusic,

the audio player is now unaware if another song is playing. I mean when I click a song it starts playing, but if I click another one - it starts playing without stopping the previous one. I think that you are using SoundManager 2, so it has some option to make the player stop the previous sounds before playing a new one ; ]

We just rolled out a new feature that does a couple of things:

1. Playing a different sound sample pauses the one that was already playing.

2. Hovering over the album-level sound sample player will display the title of the song that is playing back.

Hope this helps!

Hi, yep, it's all I wanted : )) I'd also suggest making the tabs (seen in the picture above, just below the cursor) ajax-based since it's quite inconvenient to have to reload the page to see related information in the middle of a song : )

... also the Similar albums tab has lost the possibility to view those albums as a list. I really liked that - I could see the release year and the rating, because I usually just skip the low rated albums and now I have to hover on an album and for the popup : ))

1. We don't plan to make the tabs Ajax'd in, but I appreciate the suggestion.
2. We're working on the List View for Similar Albums now.
3. The player at the top should advance through all of the songs on the album. The single play buttons in the tracklist are single-serving only, based on user requests.
