Bryan Adams, and his albums, are not findable in the search engine.

Just FYI -- Bryan Adams cannot be found via your search engine, nor can any of his albums. Ie, searching for "Bryan Adams", or "Waking up The Neighbours" or "Cuts Like A Knife" -- none of them can be found.

I guess his info has been missing longer than I though.
if I had known about this forum i wouldn't have asked my question.

Why don't you put an info page in place of Bryan Adams' bio page explaining why his info /discography is no longer on your site?

Are there any other artists that are missing from the site?

Hi Bigcat,
Mr. Adams is the only major artist to ask to be removed from AllMusic.

I'm surprised that you aren't allowed to have his "discography" with out any reviews on it.
You would think an Artist would want his music to be found in case people were looking for a cd or a song by him.

It's an "all or nothing" relationship. The artist can't expect AMG to give free publicity to his work while prohibiting them from saying anything bad about it.

For the record, AMG gave 4.5 stars to two of his first four albums. I won't mention them by name because it would likely break their agreement. However, you can find the ratings from them and several other reviewers on W*k*p*d*a

Not only that..... but since when was a public figure ever allowed to legally preclude someone else from writing an op-ed piece about their public works? AMG's deliberately vague replies, coupled with "for now all we are allowed to say is..." clearly indicate that there was some sort of legal action taken by Adams. But on what grounds?

Metadata such as his name, birth date, the names and release years of the albums, etc. are pretty much public domain. Adams has no right to prevent someone listing such information.

Reviews are purely op-ed. People write opinion pieces all of the time. There've been some absolutely blistering album reviews in the past 40-50 years (Lester Bangs, anyone?) and AMG's reviews were hardly savaging. Under what pretense could Adams possibly make a case against AMG that could cause them to cave in such disappointing fashion? The only thing Adams could point to is if AMG provided sound clips (tho even there, I believe 5-second clips bypass the copyright/trademark situation).... but even playing it conservatively, all AMG has to do is remove the sound clips and they're completely in the clear.

It continues to astound, befuddle, and disappoint me that AMG has inexplicably caved to Adams' demands. I'm honestly more disappointed in that than I am Adams' juvenile demand in the first place. There has to be more to the equation -- I mean, clearly AMG didn't want to do this as this site is their baby -- but it still makes no sense at all how Adams could possibly have a single leg to stand on re: his demands.

Even the metadata on him is still available on Wikipedia so it's pretty stupid to think that taking it down on AMG would make any difference especially when Wikipedia is a bigger and more popular.

as far as the five second clips .. i remember that they used to be a bit longer and why would anyone complain about clips? radio plays artists completely for free with no compensation to any artist and noone ever complains about that.

i can understand that AMG doesn't want to duke it out in court with a rich rock star tho.

There's definitely a LOT more to this sad tale than AMG is being allowed to tell, and that's unfortunate. Given the many middling or outright negative reviews I've seen on AMG over the years--many a lot worse than what they've said about Adams--this is a total mystery to me. Many current BA fans or curious listeners would likely use AMG as a resource to help them in their music-purchasing process, and now that avenue seems closed to them because Adams and/or his management has thin skin (or whatever their justifications may be). Legally, this bothers me tremendously, but musically, I couldn't care less, as IMHO Adams hasn't done anything of any real merit since "Reckless."

Zac/Dawn/Chrysta,

It would be greatly helpful/beneficial if AllMusic could post a publicly-viewable page addressing this topic, and explaining why Adams' information cannot be viewed (ie, the "Due to the request of Mr. Adams......")

Considering how far back AMG goes and how influential it is, it's a fairly big deal that an artist has gone so far as to take legal steps to prevent his information from being found/displayed on AllMusic. I have added a Wikipedia entry to Bryan Adams' page on this subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryan_Ad...

The problem is, this entry keeps being removed because it is construed as "unverified web gossip", since this GetSatisfaction forums page isn't considered an official source but rather just a forum of 'gossip'. Could you please post a page on allmusic.com regarding this subject? It doesn't have to be linked from the main page, or from anywhere else for that matter, but it would be very helpful if you did have a direct URL to an allmusic.com-hosted page that contained your explanation.

Thanks,
Supra92

This statement from Dawn, and repeated by Zac, is not gossip "Due to the request of Mr. Adams, we are no longer permitted to display his information on AllMusic." Any speculation as to the reasons they are not allowed to do so is gossip. I would not expect that AMG is anxious to make things easier for a competing site.

I think it would make things easier for AMG if they were to put that statement on the overview page for any artist that does not participate, but it's my guess that they are prohibited from creating any entry for those who have requested that their material be removed. A listing that contains such a disclaimer could have a negative influence on the reader.

Exactly right. The problem as Wikipedia's 'senior editors' perceive it, is that this GetSatisfaction discussion board does not constitute a "credible source", and thus they are simply continually deleting the entry. It would be far easier to present Zac/Dawn's comments as a credible source if they were to actually publish that legal statement on allmusic.com itself --- either as a stand-alone, unlinked direct URL page, or as a page that comes up if one searches for Adams. The problem, of course, is what you stated -- they're likely prohibited from creating any entry for him whatsoever.

Because of that, really hoping Zac/Dawn can get an official independent page posted on allmusic.com, even if it only contains that one "Due to the request..." line, along with an AllMusic editor's name or signature. I'd be surprised if AllMusic views Wikipedia as a competitor or threat, and if anything, I'd hope they'd view this move as a step in the right direction towards getting greater visibility to Adams's inexplicable behaviour/demand.

Hi Zac,

I understand, and that is fine -- nothing more needs to be added to that one sentence. The request is that AllRovi actually put this on the allmusic.com site someplace -- either a separate page, or as a replacement for Adams's 404 Error Message.

This shouldn't be a problem since all the page will say is precisely that one line you've given us --- but you'd be doing your users a service by providing that explanation right there on your site, rather than having each and every person wonder, scratch his/her head, and either walk away confused/disappointed, or unnecessarily have to ask the question here on these forums when it's already been addressed.

Can this be done? Your userbase would be quite appreciative, and it doesn't involve saying anything more than you've already said -- just that one-line statement.

Thanks,
Supra92

I would guess that the costs that might be incurred in any ensuing legal action, regardless of the merits of Bryan Adams's claims (and the extreme unlikelihood that he would win, since it is either public information or AMG's own text), has persuaded AMG to comply with Adams's request that the site not display any information about him. Deep(er) pockets speak loudly.

What the hell happened to AllMusic?.

What the hell happened to a formerly useful site? Wow... I check out for a while and come back to find someone has turned AllMusic into .. I don't know. Opposite of useful.

Specifics, you say? Ok. I came here to look up a song by Bryan Adams, that I can't remember the correct title to. So I go to the home page. Everything looks funky. Don't panic! I'll just try the search box and assume the eye candy isn't going to affect the old functionality I'm used to.

Type in "Bryan Adams". First suggestions come up, Artists, Albums... not Bryan Adams. You remember Bryan Adams, right? Big mainstream top-selling artist in the 80's and 90's right? It's not like I'm looking for something obscure like Danielle Dax. It's BRYAN Freaking ADAMS.

So I click "Show All Results". Narrow to Artists. Only 15,000 choices to pick from. Maybe the algorithm is smart enough to route the "most popular" Bryan Adams to the top of the list? No. Not even the top 40. Top 100. Top 200???

At this point, as a consumer who just wanted to quickly scan Bryan Adam's catalog of albums for a song, I have given up. Maybe this is an aberration. But if I can't type "Bryan Adams" in the search box and find the well-known artist by that name within 30 seconds? Complete and utter failure. And I didn't give it 30 seconds. I tried multiple searches, album titles ("Waking up the Neighbors", "Cuts Like A Knife"), no better luck with that. I found Bryan Adams karaoke albums. Come on, really? I spent 15 minutes trying to find a big-name artist and came up empty, and so frustrated I had to type a 10-minute screed describing my frustration!

I can only conclude that either a) Bryan Adams is for some unknown reason not in your database.. or b) your redesigned site is a big bowl of dog turds with little cherry-shaped turds on top. It's also possible I am missing the obvious, but I am dumbfounded if that's case, because how hard SHOULD this be?

Sorry for being so colorful, but after reading several complaints in which the response is a hearty "yay, thanks for your comments and for stopping by, sorry you're disappointed" - I just can't take it. Please don't thank me, just tell me what the hell happened!

Blame Canada.  I hope that you'll now take your colorful diatribe over to wherever Mr. Adams official website is, and give him a piece of your mind as well.

I agree that it can be very difficult to determine that all of Mr. Adams work has been removed when you are presented with 15,000 choices.

Ignoring Bryan Adams.

Would you mind explaining why all recordings by Bryan Adams are nowhere to be found? Is this a personnal vendetta or is just an oversight. It seems amazing that an artist who is known all over the world and you look for an entry on any of his albums and it comes out with a blank!

Whenever a reader posts a question, they're presented with a list of possible answers and asked if any of them pertain to their problem.  Using your subject title, there were four other threads listed that addressed this.   Is this just an oversight or did you think that you would get a different answer?  Try Wikipedia or The Wayback Machine.
