Superb review from Bruce Eder on the complete Janowski Ring cycle. The Solti/Karajan cycles are by far the more famous, but Janowski, with one of the finest German orchestras, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and a fine, consistent cast, provide a Ring cycle that matches the Solti/Karajan in pure musicality and, I think, surpasses them in tonal clarity and vividness of recording. I was familiar with the Solti/Karajan cycles before Janowski, but decided on this set to buy. It can't be praised too highly, and neither can this fantastic review: if you are new to Der Ring des Nibelungen, this is the first investment you should make. And, as Eder remarks, librettos are cheap and numerous. You can get a very good one from Amazon for under or around $20 or so. If you are familiar with the Ring already, then, well, you probably already know about the merits of this cycle. Well done Janowski, RCA and major kudos to Bruce Eder for this review.
