New AllMusic Feature: Personalized New Release Notifications

We know how tough it is to keep up on when new albums get released. Local record shops are becoming an endangered species and many of us miss that feeling of walking in and having the clerk say "Oh hey, I know you like The Velvet Underground so I stashed this reissue behind the counter for you."

We wanted to enable our friends to keep track of the albums that come out each week by their favorite artists, so we built a way to be a bit more like that clerk behind the counter.  Maybe a little less surly and judgmental though...

Following Artists
Now on AllMusic, logged-in users can choose to "Follow" a band or musician on the artist page. Right under the artist name is a button allowing you to follow an artist. Selecting this will enable AllMusic to notify you when that artist releases something new.

Notifications
If an artist you are following releases a new album or single, AllMusic will let you know about it. A notification flag will light up at the top of the site allowing you to click through to the album pages, read the reviews, hear samples of the songs and really dig in.

Keeping You Connected With Your Favorite Music

We know better than anyone how hard it can be to keep up with new releases, which is why we're so excited to introduce this feature, and we hope it makes it easier for you to stay connected to your favorite artists. Basically, we think you're pretty cool, and you deserve cool things.

Please take a look and let us know what you think by commenting below.

Good idea, but it's made me realise how few of my favourite artists are still making music.

This is a nice addition but should've been implemented ages ago.  Today's version should be smarter about it then me having to go specifically to each artist page and select, "follow".  I have lots of ideas on making this a stronger feature.

I wouldn't mind notifications by genre (perhaps more interesting for smaller genres and sub-genres like ambient and darkwave) it would less useful for pop or rock releases. Also notifications for "similar" artists would be interesting. Follow Basic Channel" and get new releases for who AMG has determined is a similar artist or an artist influenced by. Now that would be useful to me. Especially in certain genres of music where discovery is more difficult.

Great idea, but too much work. If you could pick up my artists from FB and Twitter I would sign up right now.

Hi there, great addition, but I fear this comes too late for me. I am following artists on last.fm (by scrobbling) and spotify already, maybe an import function to AllMusic could be made. I am wondering however what the added value would be for me. What is that added value at AllMusic over e.g. the sites that I mentioned?

Because this will tell you when music is officially released, not days/weeks/months later when it's finally available on Spotify or the like.

Been referring to this amazing  Allmusic Site since the beginning. Like the addition of rating albums and now the ability to follow your favourite artists. Turned many people on to Allmusic over the years. Thanks for continually growing & making it the best music resource.

Hi guys, thanks for the kind words.
This is something that we wanted to do for a while.

In regards to importing favorite artists from other services, it's something we talked about but there are a couple things that we wanted to think through first.

1. Bands that you listen to on Last.fm or have Liked on Facebook may not necessarily be bands that you would want a new release notification for (for whatever reason).  Instead of implying those connections, we thought it best to let our users decide for themselves which bands they wanted to follow.

2. The Facebook/iTunes/Twitter/Spotify/Last.fm databases and AllMusic databases don't necessarily have enough lines of connection for this to be practical from a developmental/programming perspective. For example, our system's internal code for organizing information on Kanye West might be "12345678" and the Facebook version could be "87654321," and manually linking tens or hundreds of thousands of artists to their Facebook pages is not something we're capable of doing.

It's not out of the question though, so thanks for the feedback.

True. However, you can allow the user to pick which of their Last.fm Top 50 (Overall, 6 months, 3 months, week) they'd like to follow. This should simplify things a bit.

It's doable but there has to be a value returned on the resources put in.  I have a dream app in mind that no one has yet to produce.   AllMusic is in a great place to take advantage of this need.   I just think you need to think bigger.  I'm open to discussing this with someone.  I'm also researching the possibility of just creating it myself.

I suggest at least let us add the artists with a (+) icon from the suggestions of the search box.

Great new feature! There's one thing I did not understand though: will the user receive an e-mail notification or will we only see new notifications when accessing the AllMusic website?

Adding the option of receiving notifications via e-mail would be great!

Hi k3rmit,
The current method is alerting you on the site when new albums come out. We're exploring the option of sending an email as well at some point in the future.
