No auto-playing videos please

Auto-playing sidereel videos on tv show pages are lame. Everyone knows that auto-playing any type of media (video or music) after a web page loads is bad web etiquette.

Thanks for the feedback. The auto-load is done to help users notice who are interested in the news, but of course anyone can pause it if they'd rather not see the video. Thanks for the feedback and we will keep it in mind as we develop our original video project.

Thanks for the prompt reply Kendra. I'm afraid I don't agree with your reasoning. Making a user pause an auto-playing video to prevent it from playing is impractical and slightly invasive/spammy. If the user is genuinely interested in watching it they can just click the play button themselves.

When a video automatically plays it eats up bandwidth on both the user and server side. This isn't practical for various reasons, one important reason could be a for a mobile user who loads the page only to find an auto-loading video streaming the content and eating their costly bandwidth. This also slows the down the loading of the whole page, including the ads (one of your revenue streams).

Another more trivial example is something that bugs me a lot. I sometimes discover new shows via Sidereel, something I enjoy very much. This is a great quality of this site, one I believe you wish for all your visitors (correct me if I'm wrong). So when I reach the page for a TV sitcom and look for a link in an earlier season and I begin to hear news and updates from the current season it gets really frustrating. This ruins the experience of discovering a new show for a user.

I like Sidereel and am sincerely just trying to recommend an improvement in the experience for all users.

Thanks!

I have to agree with the original poster. If you have auto-play you're providing news to those who didn't ask for it. Besides that, many internet providers are bumming down on bandwidth... "unlimited bandwidth" comes with an asterisk with fine print stating that users must stay under a certain amount that "many 'normal' users do not exceed this amount" but with watching videos, it eats up bandwidth like a hungry kid with candy and ice cream.

Oh dear lord, Kendra, that type of reasoning will just lose you viewers, seriously. I appreciate the work you guys put into those news videos, but you should not jam it in our faces unless we ask you to. Autoplay is annoying as it is disrespectful, and it also makes your site way heavier and not as easy to navigate (I have to scroll to the gracious video and pause it). Please, this is an unbelievable flaw on an otherwise awesome site. Something this simple is really ruining the experience of watching, following and discovering TV shows; this can be a great site, don't drive us away from it.

Thanks for the feedback egon -- we certainly don't mean to drive you away, and especially don't wish to be disrespectful to our site visitors. We're still working on and experimenting with the different ways we present our content and facilitate discovery on the site, so we'll be sure to keep your feedback regarding your user experience in mind for future developments. Thanks again.

Auto-play is a very frustrating feature. I believe I am not the only person who loves (or at least used to love, sorry kendra, but this new site is just terrible) sidereel, and thus keep it open almost all the time on my 24-hour online PC. While doing that everytime your webiste goes down, refreshes itself or whatever I get the video playing. I am a musician and I work high sensitive data that I often play at real high volume settings (since they are recorded rather quietly) and the sudden burst of sound from a sidereel video once nearly gave me a heart attack. By the way while I was writing this the faces that you get to choose for your "feelings" cover the text field and I had to write blind until I clicked one of those.

I had that same problem on another reply. Unfortunately, it's a Get Satisfaction issue, not a SideReel one. :\

I agree with the OP and with Peter here wholeheartedly. Especially in that the direction the "new" sidereel is not the best. Autoplay is simply offensive web etiquette(i.e. worse than bad), takes up bandwidth for us and you, annoys the end-user(especially when it can be disruptive, or worse, harmful if you have headphones on and it's loud as heck). Don't disable the auto-playing, fine, but I(and many others) will just use AdBlock and you'll lose revenue from other ads as well. Keep heading in this annoying, non-user-friendly direction, and I at least will stop using this site in general.

Edit: derp, guess I should have read the whole thread first. If you guys really have removed this "feature" in the beta, then, thank you very much for being attentive and responsive to your users' wishes. That said, is this something that is looking like it will move from the beta build to the release build anytime soon?

Autoplay is generally considered rather rude. I love sidereel; It is my primary means of consuming television, but if these autoplaying videos continue to plague the site, I am going to have to give up on sidereel altogether.
Here is a blog which fairly eloquently talks about the problems with autoplay: http://blog.2createawebsite.com/2010/...

I mention this because I really hope that someone who works for sidereel will say something to their boss. Thanks for all the work that you guys put in to the site.

I would like to say I enjoy this site a lot and I understand that there are bills involved with running the site. I also can say from a user point of view auto play ads drive me away from sites. If the product is interesting to me I have no problem clicking on it for further info but when something autoplays I find it intrusive and unwanted. Even if the product is something that might interest me I will never know cause I just close the page out of annoyance.

Hi Josh, we totally understand. I believe most people in this thread were referring to our show-related news videos which auto-play on some show pages which will remain like that for the time being, but we do not intentionally run auto-playing audio ads and are happy to inform our ad company to turn off the sound if need-be. If ads like that come up, you can report them here:http://support.sidereel.com/sidereel/...

Pretty much any time something plays automatically, it's going to irritate your users. Sometimes I'm listening to music, or maybe I'll open several SideReel tabs at once... trying to force me me to watch your "SideReel TV" is a surefire way to make me NOT want to watch it. Please stop making the videos play automatically. Like others have said before, it's RUDE and intrusive. You can find other ways to encourage people to watch SideReel TV.

P.S. Just because "anyone can pause it if they'd rather not see the video" doesn't mean they should have to. I love this site, but making more work for your users isn't the way to keep them around. I hope SideReel will reconsider this "feature".

Hi njabang,
If you're using the newer beta version of our site, there should be no autoplaying SideReel TV videos. We do host autoplay ads, but they should be playing with no sound. If you encounter any disruptive videos that are playing on beta with sound and shouldn't be, please write back with info on the specific video/ad you've encountered so we can track it down. Thank you!

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your reply. I've switched to the beta version of the site and encountered the autoplaying 'TV News' video here (http://beta.sidereel.com/tv/90210). I think I saw it again somewhere else, but I don't remember where. I hope you really meant what you said about removing autoplaying videos. They really are a nuisance.
Thanks again

The videos have been switched back to autoplay for the same reasons as before which are mainly so they are not missed by those interested. You can always find them in the righthand column of the page to either watch or pause to watch later if you see it'll contain spoilers for you. It will only start again if the page is refreshed.

Alright, you may do as you see best on your site, but I will say that I, unfortunately, am not interested in adding additional steps to my video search process, so I've switched to another site. In my experience, most people just want to watch the episode they came to watch and THEN search for relevant reviews/recaps, but hey, I'm just the person who uses--used to use--your site. What do I know?

Thanks for your feedback, crashd, and I'm sorry to hear that you found the user experience unsatisfactory. We're still developing the way in which we present our original content on the site, especially with the new features we've been introducing to SideReel v2, so we still value your opinion as a former SideReel user and will take your thoughts into consideration for future developments.

I find it humorous that you guys keep replying, saying that you appreciate the feedback; yet, when there are SO many people asking for the removal of auto-play, considered among the worst of website etiquette(which was even removed, then reinstated apparently), some people even leaving the site(myself being one of them, I've moved on to more easy to use, less annoying video aggregate sites), you guys come on here and essentially say(especially Kendra), "Sorry, tough ****, don't like it? don't come here". Not exactly how people should run a user-oriented website.

Hi digthatfunk,
I understand your frustration, and I'm sorry to hear you're dissatisfied with the current state of things on the site, but we do take your feedback to heart for future developments. That doesn't mean we plan to implement every suggestion we receive on this forum; rather, the intent of this community is to give users the chance to voice your opinion and for us to take it in, consider it, and give you honest answers. That being said, in regard to this particular issue, as of now, we use autoplay for our original videos, though this is subject to change, as our user experience is constantly evolving, pending future updates and features.

Please remove the sound on your video clips or remove the automatic play because is really annoying that each time I go to the TV or Movie main page it starts playing with sound. make it optional, I don't need to watch it 3 times in a row!

Well, too bad, they don't give a crap what we think, apparently. I mean, what do we know, we're only the users of the site, but they know what's best for us, even if it takes up their bandwidth and is generally accepted as bad internet etiquette. I've found a much better site that actually doesn't blatantly disregard it's users concerns; you should probably do the same.

That said, how do I stop getting e-mails when people comment on this thread?

Hi digthatfunk,
Sorry for the confusion but I'm just cleaning up the GS community by merging/grouping similar topics. The response above is actually from awhile ago -- since then we've implemented the ability to change your preferences on your SideReel account to disable autoplaying videos. Sorry to hear that in the meantime you opted to use a different site, but we hope you'll consider coming back!
As for your Get Satisfaction notification settings, I believe you can edit your e-mail preferences in your profile.

What digthatfunk said. Sidereel pisses me off. I started using another site a long time ago, after they basically told me to suck it up about the autoplay. I suggest you do the same.

Hey crashd,
Please refer to my response above. :) Sorry to hear the SideReel user experience was unsatisfactory while you used the site. We'd never tell you to just suck it up! Though we can't necessarily give our users what they request immediately, as users of the site ourselves, we're always interested in what the users say and what they want out of their site. Without you we wouldn't exist!

Hi Alex,
I wasn't aware that autoplay can now be disabled. That was one of the reasons I stopped using the site. As for the other reason, I believe Kendra's exact words were: "anyone can pause it if they'd rather not see the video." As you can see above, her comment sparked a chain of politely pissed replies. It sure sounded like "suck it up" to me...
Anyway, I really do like the site, but I don't want to have to sign in just to stop videos from autoplaying.
Thanks for replying though!!

Hey crashd,
So sorry to hear you were offended -- many users didn't realize that the videos were from a player that could be stopped or muted, and since we had no immediate control over autoplay at the time, she was just trying to give the only quick solution we had for the users annoyed by it. I can assure you that she didn't intend to have any snarky undertones (I believe she has been referred to as "the nicest person on the internet") ;)
In any case, I respect your decision to opt out of signing up (after all, it's the personal tracker that's often the main point of signing up for SideReel over a different video site). I hope in the future as our site continues to grow you'll consider coming back for a visit :)

Ah, I see Alex -- thanks for clearing it up. I appreciate knowing that you guys have finally added the ability to stop videos from autoplaying; I'll definitely give you guys another try if that's true, because I used to love this site. But, as crashd.burnd said, the way that some of your fellow representatives reacted at first to the problem was essentially "Don't like it? Suck it up!", which isn't exactly great customer relations. Also, thanks for the info on not following the thread!

So glad to hear you'll consider using the site - if you do, please let me know of any other improvements we can make. There's always room to grow! Also, I hope you may have simply mistaken a fellow user as a SideReel rep -- we'd never tell you to just suck it up (we're a pretty small team over here so I can't imagine any of us saying such a thing!) and we take our customer support very seriously! So sorry to hear you were offended and we'll be on the lookout for users posing as SideReel reps.

First, i think your site is awesome...but i find the reel-tv widget inserted in every serie ́s page kind of annoying. I visit these pages several times a week, so...the first time i see the content is nice, but then i have to stop it ́cause, let ́s face it, by the end of the week there ́s no news but old news..:-(
That said...it ́s just a detail...overall you ́re doing an amazing job...

UPDATE: Hey everyone! You can now toggle off auto-playing SideReel videos by signing into your SideReel account, visiting your profile, and then unchecking the box in your settings. If you still wish to watch any of our Reel TV segments, you can still do so at reeltv.sidereel.com. Let me know if you have any questions!

Ok, you HAVE to cool it with the auto-streaming videos on nearly EVERY page. They are completely jarring (and petty darn arbitrary most of the time). And, endearing though they may be, I don't need Kendra & Rachel updating me on shows I may or may not even watch every time I navigate to a Sidereel page. I use Sidereel to find & watch TV online not to get opinions about it. I mean, atthe very least, don't make them automatically play. That makes you no better than a pop-up.

Thanks:)
