you removed the recording dates from jazz album entries. Because of this, now AMG has become worthless to me.

Recording dates give you a historical perspective.

Plus, it is the only real way to determine which performance is associated with a particular track name. As you know (or should know), jazz is intimately related specific solos by individuals. Jazz musicians may record a particular song several different times in a recording studio, which are all different works of art. This is quite unlike most pop music in which the same track name on different compilations is usually the same performance. There is no easy way to determine what performance a track name refers on jazz compilations or even jazz albums, which are often complicated discographic messes.

Very disappointed. Now, I have to use your outdated book and go to other real discographies on the web.

This is an issue with our databuilding process. While we still have the information in our internal database, we are not surfacing that information in the view that we use to populate the site.

We're working on getting it corrected.

The old version supplied an albums recording date in most cases, where can I find that now?

the updated version is very useful but the former given recording date is omitted and that's a pity

Hi Fred,
We do currently list albums by release date, but that's an interesting suggestion to apply to songs as well.

Thanks for the food for thought, and for using AllMusic!

Release dates can be useful info, especially if they alert us to improved, remastered editions (like Rudy Van Gelder's series, for example). But otherwise, the original recording date is much more important if we want to understand an artist's progression (as kmullin pointed out). Often the CD release date is quite removed from the recording date. So how long does it take to get this together?
