This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Why can't I change the time zone on the mobile app?

The iphone app doesnt list shows for my region with adjusted times like the sidereel site does.
eg. family guy is listed as monday 3pm fox (for my region settings) but the iphone app says sunday 9pm.
Id like the app to use my regional settings too.

Hi Al,
Thanks for the question. Due to the general consensus that users don't like the altered regional time zones on their profile, we've simplified things on the app to simply show what time the shows typically air on TV, regardless of time zone.

Why doesn't the SideReel iPhone app display airing times in the correct timezone for my account? I am logged in both on the website and in the app. The website shows the correct time but the app does not.

Oh, I see this has already been covered. That's a bit dissappointing Alex, surely it would make more sense to let your customers choose (through a settings page) whether or not to apply regional timezones. As it stands, the times on the app's calendar are next to useless to me.

sidereel uses my iphones time not the local time zone of the show being broadcast.
So its Sunday night 850pm (my time) and I get an alert saying Family Guy is on in 10 minutes which isn't correct for me..

Hi Al,
Since you're not based in the US (I'm assuming, based on your described timezone settings) where Family Guy is initially programmed and aired, alerts simply won't be accurate for you, since it's meant to remind you when a show is on TV. You can turn alerts off by clicking the bell icon when you're on your tracker page.

Hi James! As described above, the times on the app's calendar should reflect when the show will be airing on TV locally for you (in the US, that is, for most US-based shows), which should be the most helpful when it comes to alerting you when a show is airing -- one of the main new features of the app as opposed to the website. The website's tracker calendar, on the other hand, shows when a show is first airing ever -- not necessarily in your region -- which many users have found confusing in the past.

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately this is not really how I intend to utilise this app. At present the calendar is still showing me U.S. airing times and channels (I am in New Zealand). This is fine for me, as I find it useful to, er, know when these shows first air... However displaying the actual time correctly (for my timezone) would be useful. It simply makes sense to me to allow users of the app to select for what timezone to display the times (independently from the website), nothing more, nothing less. Surely that's not complicated, and wouldn't needlessly confuse customers as they would need to change said timezone for this to happen.

Hi James,
I see where you're coming from, but it's a bit tricker than you describe, because the way things are programmed, the website (due to its focus on watching TV online) displays when a show is first available online, while the app (which does not support actual watching of shows, aside from iTunes) focuses on when a show is actually on TV so that you don't miss your show when it's about to air. This is due to the different functionalities of the site vs. the app.
If you want the mobile app to alert you when a show is actually airing in the US (like the site is programmed to), you can try setting your SideReel profile timezone (on the site) to Eastern time. That way, although the calendar on your site will be displaying times differently than how you prefer, you should be able to use the actual app version as you describe.
We'll definitely keep in mind the ability to modify one's viewing settings based on either TV vs. online schedules, but for now hopefully this is a suitable (although roundabout) temporary fix.

I don't quite understand the new functionality. I have my timezone on the site set to my own timezone (GMT+1) and it works just as I'd expect, my tracker shows me at what time shows air. Like that, I now I can watch them online a few hours later.
The app, however, shows me the unadjusted US times when they air. This is of no use to me at all. I don't even get US channels, so there's no chance of me missing the episode anyway.

Hi Oliver,
I totally get what you're saying, as it is a bit confusing that the app functionality is different from the site. The site tracker shows you when shows are airing on the east coast -- in other words, when they are first airing ever, and therefore will shortly begin being made available online. This functionality is often confusing to users that live in other parts of the US because, for example, it will tell a user in San Francisco that Gossip Girl is on at 5pm instead of 8, due to the 3-hour time difference.
The mobile app tries to alleviate this problem for people who actually want notifications for when the show is airing on TV in their area. In other words, the mobile app functions based on what's on TV (since you can't watch the shows online through the mobile app), while the site still caters to when you can watch it online.
I understand that this mobile time zone functionality isn't helpful for users not in the US because the shows aren't actually televised in your area (at least not on the same network schedule). We will definitely work on developing different ways for our abroad users to get more use from the app, but in the meantime you can still keep track of the shows you're watching and mark episodes as watched.

Yeah, so I am in the Arizona time zone and it is never right. I have to select the central time zone to know when the shows are on using the website, but with my iTouch the time zone displayed is the Arizona Time, or some other wacky time zone that is incorrect and it tells me 2 hours too early that my show is on, but by the time it actually comes on I have already forgotten that it was on and missed it. Why is there no way to fix this?!

Hi,
well, I'm from Australia and I use your app to keep track of all the shows i watch, and i wanted to ask if you could possibly include a time-zone feature in the iPhone app, like you have on the website on the computer.
Because at the moment all the show times are in the American times, therefore i get the show notifications a day early :S
Thanks, this would be greatly appreciated :D

Since the times on my ipod are inaccurate (Eastern vs. regional time zone), is there a way to disable the popup alerts on my ipod? I get the daily emails which are useful, but the daily alerts are not.

Hi Micah! Let me clarify - it's not a time zone issue specifically - it's the fact that central air times are always an hour earlier, and that's what the app doesn't recognize. So no matter what time zone you change your preferences to, the schedule will still only recognize its non-central airtime, but by switching your settings to Mountain Time, you'll at least receive your notifications an hour earlier, which should be accurate for central air times.

Alex, I think we are saying the same thing. The App still notifies me one hour late regardless of the time zone that I have my profile set to.

Hi Pepe, where are you located? The mobile app uses your phone's time zone to try to reflect when the show would be airing for your area, which we recognize is unhelpful for users who live outside the US.

I have an android phone and I want to change the timezone because I live in Europe, so the standard timezone of the tracker does not apply to me. How do I change the timezone on the app? On the website, the tracker is in the right timezone, why doesn't it automatically apply to the app?

Even if it's possibile to customize the time zone of my calender on sidereel website, I couldn't find any option to do so in my Android app of sidereel. Isn't it possibile to customize it from the app? Or at least keep the same time zone customized in someone's account on web?

Hi abc,
Since the app is less focused with actually watching TV online, it syncs with your phone's internal time settings to give you notifications based on your region. Are the app times incorrect for you?

i'm in Rome so my time zone is CET and on my andoid app all times are showing EST time... even it's for shows aired on US, wouldn't it be more logical to customize the time zone in the app? i don't think it would be that confusing for people to understand that it refers to US airing time in local time zone and not time for local airing as i don't think that you cover also local airing outside US on NON-US channels...
i think you should put an option for NON-US users to customize their time zone while for US users you keep the normal local time zone to not confuse them with the situation like "East Coast - San Fransisco time zone difference"...
maybe some option to choose if you want the TV approch or the WEB approch...

Hi again abc,
Yes I totally agree with you - the time settings for the app have always been problematic for international users, because in most cases, the shows featured aren't actually airing for you locally, so the regional times aren't as helpful for you. In any case, I agree that having timezone settings within the app would be ideal to cover our bases and make sure we're accommodating everyone who uses the app! Thanks for clarifying, and I'll be sure to bring this up at our next product meeting.

thanks for understanding.
waiting eagerly for an uptade to the app then...
as right now it's not quite as useful as the web version for international users and sometimes it's even much annoying...
looking forward to have news about it from your next product meeting... :)

I just downloaded the sidereel app for my iphone, and at first it was working great. It still works, except now it's set for the wrong day. For instance, today is Wednesday, but when I open the app, it says it's Tuesday, even though all the showtimes are listed correctly.

i downloaded the mobile app on my iPhone and i live in bahrain so my time zone is like saudi arabia and its like that on my phone but for some reason the app is taking it as if my date and time is in the US. for example x factor shows at 3 am on wednesday in bahrain but at 8 pm in the states so just before 8 pm bahrain time i get that the show is airing soon on FOX but it really isn't airing. the app thinks i am in the states i tried looking in settings but there are none. the website has the timings all correct its only the app i am having trouble with. thank you

iPhone app calendar has times from wrong time zone on it..

When looking at the tracker calendar on a web browser, the show times are displayed in my local time (London) but on the iPhone app's 'my calendar' the show times are displayed in the show's local time zone, so for american shows they appear in the wrong day altogether.

SideReel iPhone App - "Time Zones" capability required!.

Hi,

Your SideReel app for iPhone is okay but it doesn't allow me to set my Time Zone like the the SideReel website calendar does.

Therefore, on my iPhone SideReel app, my Shows are one day ahead in my Calendar (i.e. haven't aired yet) because I live in Sydney, Australia.

Please update your App so I can setup my Time Zone. It's super annoying right now!

Thanks,
Marc
