reviewed releases

This problem is already being worked on, but I'm separately posting it so that its status can be tracked. Beta has a bug with reviews for releases. For example, compare the current site's review for the release "Dark Side of the Moon [Immersion Edition]" with its review in Beta. Beta shows its original album's review for this release instead of the longer review that's on the current site.

Please also verify whether Beta has a similar bug with the editor's rating that's shown for a release. The editor's rating shown by Beta rates that SPECIFIC release (or is it also showing the rating from the original album instead)? By the way, are freelance writers similarly to be blamed for albums like Van Morrison's "Live at the Roxy" that are missing a review despite showing an editor's rating?

Hi Rootsmusic,
We'll take a look into making sure the correct ratings are carried over on the release level. As far as an album being reviewed without receiving a rating, that can certainly accidentally happen (freelancer or in-house editor) from time to time. That's the risk you take when having human beings review records. ;-)

Thanks.

Zac, I understand human error may be the cause of missing reviews. My concern is that your editors may assume an album has a review when it's been only rated. For example, Bernie Taupin's album "He Who Rides the Tiger" was rated an editor's pick without a review!

I'll request our editorial team to do a query of albums with ratings but not reviews (and vice-versa) to see if there are any (like the Bernie Taupin album pick) that should get immediate attention. Not every album will have both review and rating (some may still have one or the other) but we can at least take a look.

Thanks

Zac, I found another Beta bug that differs from the problem I'd already described. Grant Lee Buffalo's full album "Fuzzy" (AMG album ID 168177) originally had different EP releases, which were released in the U.S. (AMG album ID 546761) and Australia (AMG album ID 546760). But Beta is showing the U.S. EP's review for the main album instead.

I think this is related. I've alerted our databuilding team and they're planning to look into it.

Special (or different) edition reviews no longer seem to exist. On the new site you can click on the "release" tab to bring up different editions on a specific album and all the track information. However on the old site sometimes there would be parenthetical additions to the review describing or critiquing enhancements or extras. In some cases there were entirely different reviews. For example, Sean Westergaard had posted a very detailed review of the bonus CD version of Robert Fripp's Exposure that was entirely different from the "Main Album" review (and IMHO one of the best reviews ever posted on the site). I cannot locate that review anywhere on the new site. Another one that sticks in my memory is a review of the US edition of The Beatles Rubber Soul (sadly I cannot recall the author) where the reviewer made a case that Capitol's usual "butchering" (removing some songs from the British releases to save for different albums later on) of the release for the US market actually made for a better release. I really miss these reviews!

Heh,
Jeff you might not believe this, but *I* wrote the review of the US Edition of Rubber Soul! Small world.

It is one of my favorite albums and it pains me to see it missing. We have a ticket in with our databuilding team to have it corrected.

Thanks,
Zac

Ha! Small world indeed. At least I can rest assured that someone else is on the case. Good work Zac!

Jeff, do you notice whether there's a similar bug with U.S. versions of foreign releases like my reply at https://getsatisfaction.com/allmusic/... ?

Hmm. Not specifically like the Grant Lee Buffalo release you mention. Generally it seems that all albums have only one review that blankets all the various releases in the beta version.

Zac, I assume that the main review at http://www.allmusic.com/album/rubber-... is specifically for its U.K. release. But released which year though -- mono or remixed stereo? (I'm asking about this example to understand which version would AMG consider to be the "main release".)

On the old site there were generally separate reviews (some with simply a few comments tagged on) for reissues or remasters of albums that included bonus tracks and/or bonus discs. The information provided was often useful in addressing sound upgrades and the worthiness of the extra material and something I found valuable when considering new music purchases.

These reviews seem to have disappeared from the new site. Yes, there is a "Releases" tab in album review pages, but clicking on the release in question simply returns you to the single review of the original album! (although the updated track listing is shown)

Some examples:

1. "The Harder They Come" soundtrack album at http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-har...

2. "Who's Next" by The Who at

http://www.allmusic.com/album/release...

I would like to see this functionality returned. Many of us use AMG as a buying guide and in this age of myriad remasters and reissues, informed comments on the differences between versions is essential. Considering that a great deal of such information could previously be found on AMG, I see no sense in removing it from the new site. I could understand your wanting to reorganize and perhaps present this information in a better way than before, but eliminating it? For heaven's sake, why?

Since my post was moved into this thread, I'll post this follow-up question.

So is the fact that separate reviews for separate releases of the same album have disappeared due to a bug in the new site, or is it a policy decision - at the moment anyway - to consolidate separate reviews into a single review of the original release?

Multiple editions - same review? Case in point: Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power. Multiple releases of this recording: different mixes, two cd edition, CD/DVD, etc... All link to the same review, which wouldn't be so bad if that review actually went into some kind of useful detail about ALL those different versions... Just one more way in which the new Allmusic compares UNFAVORABLY to the old Allmusic...

Where are the reviews for reissues? How long is it going to take for this 'bug' to be sorted out....is it being worked on? (it's been months since you were told about it!)

Hi all,
This is a known issue that's on our radar and is actively being worked on. We're moving to a new data service soon, which should resolve things.

Thank you for using AllMusic!

HI Kenneth,
As frustrating as this is for you it is ten times as frustrating for us.

We've requested that the data be refreshed to pull from the accurate source, and I know that the data delivery team is working on it, but we are still waiting on resolution here.

Hopefully soon,
Zac

There used to be reviews for the Pavement reissues of Slanted & Enchanted, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, etc. But they are missing now. The reviews for the original releases are still there, but the extended reissues are missing.

Hi AMG - this issue was first flagged up nearly a year ago and it still hasn't been sorted out!

What the hell is going on at AMG Towers? (apart from nothing?)

Hi all,
Because we're relying on a third party to resolve this issue, all we can do is convey to them that it's high priority and wait for them to do something. Seeing as how we've been telling you all "Sorry! We're working on it!" and telling the data delivery service "Hey! You need to fix this!" for nearly a year, today we actually shared some of the feedback from this thread with them to remind them how long this has been going on and really drive home how important it is to get this handled.

Thank you for your patience, and for using AllMusic!

Just FYI, we have rolled in the fix to display the proper release review on each different release (where we have a release-specific review).

Example:
Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon [Immersion Edition]

Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted [Luxe & Reduxe]

Sorry this took so long but as was mentioned before, the data delivery team had higher priorities in front of it. If I were ruler of the world things would have gone differently, but alas. At least the reviews are there now (a year later).

Are all of your reviewers musically illiterate? The review for the Rob mcConnell Tentet indicated that Rob didn't know how to arrange for a ten piece band. That reviewer obviously knows nothing about jazz, about music, about Rob, or about how to arrange for a band that size, or with that personnel. he should find a real job, because he's not qualified to be a reviewer.
