Submit Corrections

I'd like to see an enhanced "Submit Corrections" facility. Perhaps similar to discogs.com. Where album art, track information, year, label etc.can be uploaded for moderation. Once a particular user has submitted numerous valid corrections they become "trusted" and moderation is skipped or your submissions are, at least, fast-tracked straight to the top of the moderation pile. It would make users feel more valuable and vastly increase the database.

I realise that "Submit Corrections" already exists, but I've used it on many occasions and never seen my submissions implemented. It feels like a token gesture, once you click "submit" you can't help but feel it's been sent straight to the recycle bin, hence my request to enhance it and make it more substantial, reliable and immediate.

You could even offer accreditations, for example once someone has submitted 5 approved corrections they become "trusted" with future submissions fast-tracked, once they have done 50 or more they become "reliable" and no longer require moderation, when they have done 200 or more they can moderate other submissions. This would then reduce the strain on AllMusic moderator employees.

I agree. I've tried using the "submit corrections" feature several times as well, and then stopped doing so since my info (musician credits, track listings etc.) never appeared in the database.

I understand your frustration.

(As you likely know) AllMusic/AMG/Rovi is also the data source for a lot of music sales and e-commerce sites online, and the demands of our customers to update and maintain high-traffic large commercial new releases often take up the majority of their time.

Correcting out-of-print or archival information unfortunately ends up being a secondary priority and that group only occasionally gets free time to pick up things like you're pointing out.

Sorry your corrections have not been corrected despite your hard efforts.

Some kind of "Community Moderated Submission System" is very appealing to us, we just need to carve out the time to put it in place.

Thanks.

The staff of CJP-NHRecords [who retains all files & copyrights of grammy voting professional international recording artist, singer, songwriter, musician, producer, consultant, talent judge, business woman Nikki Hornsby] has been trying to reach someone to correct the mistakes that an opinion of Ms. Hornsby's commercial (c)BMI(p) releases & lifetime career were made in the biography. Ms. Hornsby's has single releases and projects through CJP-NHRecords. The company has been licensed since 1987 and developed a record label in 1989. All this data can be found on www.cjp-nhrecords.com website or the data that was sent by an independent individual writer of http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_H.... Nikki Hornsby was contacted by the Grammy Museum to provide product of her grandfathers who recorded his own work under Columbia Records as there is a year long display having Dan Hornsby's work in 78s & posters displayed. Nikki's Grandfather was instrumental in discovering mega Americana recording artists and doing production & engineering for Columbia plus doing radio programing & broadcasting work long before she was born. Nikki Hornsby music is still being broadcast world wide on different stations and the verification of that is also posted on cjp-nhrecords.com
CJPStaff has tried a number of times to send current bio updates plus photos etc. from 2010 to 2013 as well as future contracted projects / agreements world wide. Please help all music guide become current so the staff can offer the link to reading more than just old opinions from years ago but up to date truthful data. Example: Nikki only had the Doo Waa Riders band back her once at a Fan Fair in Southern CA many years ago but she was the leader of a five to six piece band that backed her throughout the 1990s into 2001 in concerts & performances until she traveled to do marketing throughout Europe in 2004 to 2007 returning to work more projects as the founder of CJP-NHRecords (consulting exclusive to the music recording industry) to the present day.

Thank you for your time. Sincerely, CJPStaff (rw@cjp-nhrecords.com or cjpnhrecords@yahoo.com)

Hi there,
Compile your corrections, along with supporting info such as a scan of album notes or links from the artist's official/representation website (we can't make corrections just based on word of mouth), and send them to content.music@rovicorp.com using a helpful subject line like [Artist Name] Corrections.

Thank you for using AllMusic!

CJPStaff will submit the alb notes & links etc. from our files since we ARE the official reps for Grammy Voting member Nikki Hornsby verified online and the correct CD covers can be found on eStores that are not associated with All Music Guide. This is WHY we have been trying to help correct the online mis information for years. Plus our CJPStaff has so much more news updates since 2009 on music releases when All Music was last updated. This is including press information like this one today:
Feb. 28, 2013 Article in the Shelby NC Newspaper: Written by Jackie Bridges about Dan Hornsby also mentioning Nikki Hornsby:
http://www.shelbystar.com/news/local/...
http://is.gd/3WyPMh
Article regarding the Grammy Museum Columbia Records display found here:

Hope we can get someone there at Rovi/All Music to help us. We'd gladly talk or have even the artist herself contact you by phone IF we had the correct #. Thank you & look forward to do pr for All Music / Rovi in the near future.

We keep trying to reach the all music guide people for years without response. Once years ago we, CJP-NHRecords Staff, went to the founder of ALL MUSIC GUIDE for assistance when Nikki Hornsby was offline charting her recordings around the world. Provided proof to him and then corrections were made. But then in 2005 there was errors made again on AMG pages & we couldn't reach anyone. Of course AMG company was purchased by Rovi Music and it's difficult to reach some one on their staff for corrections for even this Grammy voting noteworthy artist with (p) BMI (c) song material. Aware that in this online business it is costly to product miss information being perpetuated by links to AMG when we get corrections made. Where is the source of correcting any miss information on AMG/Rovi now? Even today Nikki Hornsby has single releases of support videos online of "Just Lovin You" in five different languages. Seems we can't even add that to AMG/Rovi and why? Amazing isn't it? NARAS (Grammy) has Nikki Hornsby as a noteworthy person in the professional music recording industry especially since her grandfather is being honored for a year at the Grammy Museum Los Angeles, CA USA. Any suggestions?

Hello,
In a single, concisely worded email, send your corrections along with supporting information (scan of album notes, link on official website, etc. -- we can't make corrections just on word of mouth) and AllMusic URLs if that would help clarify your requests, to support@allmusic.com and I'll get it to my colleagues.

Please note that due to the volume of feedback we receive, we cannot provide personalized responses to these kind of inquiries. On average we handle these requests within four to six weeks.

Thanks!

Http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Hornsby is a great source of approved verified data (not written by any relative or employee but independent source) for a Grammy voting member Nikki Hornsby found on AMG. We would think the truthful data would correspond to the AMG bio page especially since data on the AMG is NOT correct for over two years now. Nikki Hornsby has a long respected career in the music recording industry and followed in the footsteps of her grandfather who is currently being honored in the Columbia 360 display at the Grammy Museum for the entire year.

AMG / Rovi should at least review the artists that are Grammy NARAS voting members because that membership is for professionals that their committee must approve commercial USA airplay to be accepted.

Thank you,
CJPStaff (rw)

I hope that the information we sent prior made it to the appropriate person at AMG/Rovi and is now working to correct the biographical ERRORs in information regarding Nikki Hornsby. Another fact is a statement about Nikki Hornsby's grandfather who is currently featured at the Grammy Museum http://is.gd/LiUPxo 4th floor Columbia 360 display.
Nikki Hornsby's grandfather Dan was NOT a country singer but had a great career in the music industry as a trumpet player musician producer A&R man band leader etc. who discovered many talents for Columbia like Bessie Smith and more. He was a band leader singer songwriter & a popular recording artist of songs like "Take Me Out to The Ballgame" and more before Nikki Hornsby was even born. But NOT nor ever known as a country artist but did record singing novelty songs for Columbia like the list on wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Hornsby proves.
Seems the facts of Hornsby music need to be cleared up at ROVI or would you like the Grammy Ex. Dir. of the Museum or Pres. of NARAS to look into why Rovi / AMG is doing such a dis service to the Hornsby music history of Nikki Hornsby's & her grandfather's career.
Seems that we have offered many times over the years to help it be corrected but Rovi/AMG seems reluctant even with a current Grammy voting member and notable professional talented person of the past.
Thank you for your time and we wait to see some change in the facts and support. Truly we want to see the updates soon in order support Rovi/AMG's great contributions to the recording music industry.
Thank you,

Still hoping that AMG/Rovi changes the data on my Grandfather's page regarding him as a country singer. This is not correct since he recorded for Columbia Records (wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Hornsby) Take Me Out To The Ballgame in 1913 which is not nor ever was a country song. Many others he sang and even those he wrote were not country music. I'd think that he'd be more Americana and Pop than country. Hopefully AMG/Rovi will correct their mistake and have a reviewer who does research for their opinions should be based on facts. Thank you!:)

Still waiting now into April 2014 for at least changes to Dan Hornsby's Biography. Amazingly this error is not corrected but contacting the Grammy Museum currators or the Ex. Director might help in verification of facts that he was NOT a country musician but a Pop Americana Columbia Recording artist.

Also there are two Pop classical instrumentation singles (c) songs by Nikki Hornsby recorded in collaboration with a Canadian musician engineer and a Bostonian from India fellow Grammy365.com member that will be released by CJP-NHRecords 2014-2015. She has licensed another Nikki Hornsby original song to a recording artist in Austria to be recorded in disco type European style sung in German where CJP-NHRecords agreed to do the USA distribution 2014-2015 as they do distribution in Europe for airplay. CJP-NHRecords will do the distribution of the single song through distributors once the studio work is completed.

"No Brainer" yes.
Easy to implement, not as simple.

A handful of things that have come up in previous discussions around this topic:

Malicious users contributing false information: http://www.last.fm/forum/21713/_/650313

Spammers filling the site with fake offers and product placement.

Goofballs adding in jokes and mis-information. Like this hilarious one: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04...

Duplicate data or incorrect information (even with the best of intentions)

Heavy burden on moderators (internal or community) to verify information.

Lack of good incentive for users to contribute may result in little activity.

I agree that I think it is solveable, but we'd need to ensure that we are making it worthwhile to users, simple to interact with, and engineered to get us only the best data possible.

Look to Discogs.com for a model of where crowd-sourcing/community driven content works exceptionally well.

Fans, Record Labels and Artists don't need any incentive, generally all they want is for people to have the correct information (see Adrian's comments below)

I can't tell you the amount of times I've held a CD or record in my hand and looked on Allmusic.com for a review and found nothing and thought "if I could add this to their database now I would". I'm very thorough and meticulous. There are lots of audiophiles out there like me who would do the same thing.

The way to rule out spamming is to use crowd verification as well as submission.

I have questions related to data submission - which is not strictly limited to the "Submit Corrections" issue raised here, but, rather than create a new topic post, I'll explain, and should it be my concern requires a separate thread, I'll then open one up.

I serve as manager to an artist - listed on AMG - with over seven releases since 2001. Currently active, the artist is very successful commercial and critically. They are also 100% independent. I've written for years, and never received a reply, asking how to get correct and complete content for my artist onto the site (everything from overview through credits and other sections - even an image would be nice). Like everyone else here, I've tried to get info posted by using the "Submit Corrections" feature - and have yet to see a single piece of information provided appear on the site.

I'm talking current data about an artist currently active, making new recordings, etc.

How can we get this information onto the AllMusic site?

YouTube is now using Rovi services for content on the YT Artist pages. So, not only is it not helpful to artist and audience for there to be incomplete and/or inaccurate artist info on AllMusic, this same concern naturally extends to the YouTube pages being populated with Rovi data.

I appreciate help in solving this mystery! Thanks in advance!

Hi Adrian,
Information around getting new information (particularly if you have physical product for our database) can be submitted via the information available on this page:
http://beta.allmusic.com/product-subm...

Regarding getting additional items changed or added to, the staff providing corrections and changes is a relatively small group whose time is usually dominated by answering the requests coming from our data customers (the customer you pointed out and many others).

A member of our data team provides this insight:

Thanks for the comments about our feedback and corrections process. We spend a lot of time each week looking at the 750+ pieces of feedback our website attracts, and we pay especially high attention to corrections submissions. Unfortunately, the corrections process is usually not as simple as you’d think it would be. Each reported correction cannot simply be edited without proper verification, and if user corrections contradict what we’ve seen in the liner notes provided to us by labels and artists, we usually decide to honor those labels and artists. Also, as you can guess, it’s difficult to sufficiently verify many of the corrections that users submit, and we usually err on the side of caution.

Another big issue within a database of this size is distinguishing artists who have the same name (John Williams being the landmark case; we have nearly two dozen entries for different John Williams, and there are probably many more than that out there). Unfortunately, this process is also not a simple one. With limited resources, we don’t have the ability to distinguish and verify every distinct name entry. Even though we appreciate being viewed as such an authority by leading music resources around the world, we have a duty to our customers and users to pay most of our attention to the artists that are being looked up the most. If we want to be a service that provides the information that most people want to see, we have to prioritize in these ways

This probably doesn't fully answer your question, but it may shed some light on why your information has not been updated thus far.

"we have a duty to our customers and users to pay most of our attention to the artists that are being looked up the most"

The thing is, I KNOW that there are certain genre's that get overlooked and will probably be incomplete or missing so I don't even bother looking for them. I'll use discogs or even iTunes. So prioritising this way doesn't make as much sense as you think it does.

Zac... I very much appreciate your company's efforts over the years... but the current site it is not working. I am an industry professional who as many others I know have used your service as a research aid. I have always had a direct link from my website to yours to give my clients information on my latest projects. I have been assigned 5 artist ID numbers from AMG (?!?) but the main problem is the latest number contains only my 2011/12 credits. My "main" number, on the top of your search list, has three pages of credits but then ends at 2010. Not cool.

I have as many others given up on your "submit corrections" page.
I can understand how you could be overwhelmed by a sea of data. But that is a fact not an excuse. I can see no other solution but to employ users to aid in your data entry. Of course it needs to have some control. Why not regulate entry to members of a professional group such as NARAS.

8 months after the last comment and I haven't seen any improvement. Many years ago, the info I submitted would be added within a couple of weeks. Then it just stopped. Haven't seen one addition or correction added since then. It's been years. I know of artists listed under name variations that should be merged.. I know of incorrect or missing data.. missing song titles.. some of it is painful. Last I checked, I was listed as having played on some old R&B records - which I didn't do.

I know resources are limited, but this is what you guys do. What's the point of a big music database if it's incomplete, incorrect and missing lots of titles that people might actually be looking for? When I use the site, I'm looking for an obscure title.. not Bruce Springsteen.

Hi Eric,

If you like, you may send factual corrections along to content.music@rovicorp.com. From there, I can forward them to our editorial team for consideration. Please be aware that corrections are not simply added to the database as they come in; they are individually fact-checked and verified (a time-consuming process), so you may be asked to provide corroborating evidence, such as legible scans of liner notes that show missing credits. Lack of corroborating evidence submitted with corrections via the corrections link is one main reason why many user-submitted corrections cannot be put into place and are discarded. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, this all makes my heart sink. A database / information hub that doesn't prioritise or care enough about accurate and up-to-date information? Sad.
I understand the technical difficulties. But this should be your absolute priority. Because if visitors/users start to feel they are not reading current and correct information, they'll simply stop frequenting your site.

I am managing an artist who's artist photo is over 20 years old. He's still active and a popular solo recording artist, but the photo that's showing on his profile is so outdated that visitors' impression will simply confirm that AllMusic don't care and don't maintain their data properly.

If you have to rely on manual monitoring, it just proves that you are not up to scratch.

Maybe they need to set it up where someone could register as a representative for a label and make their own corrections and additions for titles released through that company. They would still need to be approved by the AllMusic staff, but at least this would free up a lot of time for them to do it.

I'd be the first to sign up.

Hi Eric,
Due to the immense volume of correspondence we receive, we are unable to provide each person a personal response – but be assured that we are working hard to process your request. It can, at times, take a bit of time for your submitted information to appear on our sites. To check on the status of your release being added to our system, your best bet is to periodically check the artist page on AllMusic. On average, requests are handled within four to six weeks.

Thanks!

OK thanks.

I wasn't expecting anyone to write me back. I was just watching the pages themselves and had no idea how long to expect.

I also sent more than $100 worth of actual CDs to the submission dept. back in December. Haven't seen a single one of them show up.

I really think you guys would solve a lot of issues with something similar to what I suggested above.... letting artists or labels themselves update pages and add releases. Of course there would have to be some standards of how someone could be established as a label or artist rep., but it would free up a lot of your resources and get updates happening faster across the board. It's pretty much what IMDB.com does.

Hi Eric,
Due to limited resources, not everything we receive through product submissions gets full data entry. It is simply not possible with the amount of staff we have and the amount of work we need to do for our data licensees and other clients. I asked my colleague to send your albums back through for complete entry, so please be patient while they get to that.

Thanks!

Please keep in mind that in addition to offering information and reviews of new releases and current artists, AllMusic serves as a historical and research resource, so those are the kind of updates (new releases, nominations/wins for major awards, other prominent historical landmarks) we consider germane to our artist coverage. In talking to my colleague, it sounds like the updates you were asking for didn't fit into this categorization, which is why they weren't added.

Thanks!

Thank you,
CJPStaff (rw)(gsg)(etc.)

That is http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_H... correct biographical data that does not match the Rovi/AMG data. Please have it corrected including the information about Dan Hornsby who is currently featured at the Grammy Music Museum in Los Angeles CA USA.

2 weeks after my last contact. 4 Months after the $100 worth of CDs were sent to you. Around 90 days since I emailed a scan of liner notes for one release after it was requested here.

Still not a single update except for a couple of titles (album and song titles only - no credits or pictures). I don't only submit corrections for bands I work with.. I've submitted a bunch of over the years. The last few years, they just go into the abyss it seems like.

You guys could be the IMDB of music.. where everyone goes to your site to check out any little fact or credit that they're trying to remember. Everyone goes there to check out the latest releases, etc. IMDB only takes about 2 weeks to add a DVD title that I submit to them, at the most. The reason they have become the film standard is because they have enormous amounts of info about *everything*. Not just major releases, but every little obscure film that someone can think of.

Hi Eric,
When you last contacted us here, I spoke to my colleague who handles these types of requests and asked that he pull the releases you provided us from our archive so they can go through the complete data entry process. Our data entry staff are aware of your request and will handle it as soon as they're able. Again, please understand that our resources are very limited and we must fulfill our contractual obligations to data licensees and other clients who pay to use our data before handling requests like yours.

I'd also like to clarify a big difference between AllMusic and IMDB: the majority of IMDB is powered by user-generated content, whereas the documents and data you see on AllMusic are all created on site by our staff. When most of your content is created by unpaid users, you can cover more but there are a lot of other factors to consider. Earlier in this very thread my colleague Zac gives some details about the challenges encountered by sites that allow users to create content, which I hope will give you a better understanding of why we haven't moved that way yet.

Thanks.

Would be really nice if my data which I have updated several times using the "Submit Corrections" section was actually updated.... You need a bigger team?

Seems to be a waste of time having it if nothing is ever done from it!

I'd happily pay for the service if I knew how! (within reason of course!)

Cheers

Hi Claudio,
Email your corrections, along with supporting information (scan of album notes, link on official website, etc.

Thanks!

Didn't I already submit changes via the submit changes section of the site? Why is it there if it is not actioned upon?

Of course I will be glad to email the changes from my official email relating to my releases, but what's the point of the submit corrections section if you also have to email the same thing again? Seems pointless.

But of course, because I want my data updated I will be happy to send it, but from reading the comments here, I am not confident that the changes will happen any time soon!

Hi Claudio,
Submit Corrections and emails to support@allmusic.com are two separate channels for contacting us. I am suggesting you email support@allmusic.com so I can personally handle your requests.

Thanks!

"four to six weeks?" It's been four months since I email scans to that address and haven't seen anything updated.

I have many more corrections I'd like to submit, but I hate to do it if that last one never makes it.

It's been even longer since I submitted my changes... Some over 8 months ago!

Hi Eric,
Four to six weeks is an average. Some requests are handled almost immediately, and others take much longer, because there are countless people like you submitting things to us but very few of us to process this feedback. In addition, we have other duties we must handle first for our clients who pay to license our data.

I know this is frustrating for folks like you, but please understand it is equally frustrating for my colleagues and me, as we take pride in our work and want to fulfill everyone's requests, but there are only so many hours in the day.

Thank you for your patience.

Please know that I'm certainly not dumping on the staff. I don't think that's what anyone is doing here. To me, the point is - there are a bunch of people that would like to see this page better than it is. More like it used to be in terms of complete & accurate content and fast updates.

If it's not possible to hire more staff or open up edits to the public - what about a small army of unpaid volunteers? People could apply for the position. All edits would then be approved by the regular staff (since they would have more time making fewer corrections and edits themselves). In return, maybe the editors could be listed on the pages they worked on... or have a thank you page set up for them. There are a lot of people that are willing to help improve if AllMusic guide would take advantage of it.
