Tell the truth: you don't have to shut down to fix the problems

other sites create a new site separately and when it's done and tested they redirect us to it or just replace the old one.  There's no reason to shut down a service that I've relied on and used for many years (like 10).
Previous experience suggests you are monetizing the site and think this is better?
The problem is that I'm looking for a new site to do what I need and when I find it I won't have any reason to come back to sidereel.
Why would you prefer to lose me?

I'm sorry you think we are lying about this.

The entire SideReel staff has been laid off over time and even without staffing the site has been losing about ten thousand dollars a month for the past 18+ months.

The vast majority of these expenses come from server hosting costs for the way the codebase is structured. By moving the site codebase from Ruby to PHP and emulating the back-end database setup we are already using on the sites AllMusic.com and AllMovie.com, we feel as though we can remove a ton of the hosting and colocation costs, hopefully enough to keep the site running.

This article talks about the impact of recent events on how websites like ours make money. All of this is hitting at once. We need to decrease our costs in May or the whole thing goes away.

On Monday we start shutting down the old database files and codebase in an effort to try to save enough money to keep the lights on.

You are right and we had hoped to do that in this case. We just didn't have time.

We're building the user functions back in now but it'll take time, and we needed to do this in stages for the reasons I listed above.

I keep seeing comments about this site being so valuable that we'd pay for it...it's all the ads that make the site suck...do the math! Your efforts are GREATLY appreciated!

Yup, only here for the tracker, mainly because it's easier to use than the one at ReelGood.

Love the tracker and I'll be waiting for you guys to come back. Do you have a donation page set up so we can donate if you would like to? Seems to me you are missing an opportunity here with those that love the site. Just like Wiki or other pages do you might want to think about a quick donation link and let people know that you are in need.

They have extended it -
we've kept the back-end site at https://cf.sidereel.com for longer than expected so users can still sign in and see their old tracker info and badges. Please note, any changes made to this old site will not carry over to the new service. We had originally planned to take it down after the first weekend but wanted to leave it in place if people were still getting use out of it.
