Unfair rules in givaways - why require a facebook or twitter account?

as a long time fan of this site and one who directs everyone to it when looking for anything music related, I find it incomprehensable that the staff would require someone to have a facebook or twitter account to ent one of the givaways. Not allowing someone who does not use these services is an unfair limitation.

Sorry you feel this way. Maybe I can help explain a bit.

When we do a giveaway promotion for any of the things you've seen on AllMusic, we're trying to do a number of things at once:

1. Give a cool thing away to an AllMusic user.
This is the one we're most excited about.

2. Help promote AllMusic in some public ways to try to alert more music fans to our site.
By asking people to "Share" a Facebook Post or "Retweet" something on Twitter, we are able to introduce AllMusic to thousands of people who might not know about us.
If you are a longtime fan you'll probably note that you've never seen an AllMusic TV commercial or Print Ad or even another online ad for our site. Our marketing/advertising budget is certainly limited, so we need to do some more cost-effective projects to try and get the word out to new music fans.

3. Have built-in reporting tools and methods of contact to the prospective winners.
By using these established and public methods of doing these free giveaways, we end up having built-in reporting and analytics tools to provide back to the party that is doing the giveaway (nothing intrusive, just saying that the giveaway reached x-number of people during the time it was running), as well as built-in methods of contacting the winner when they've won (it being a social network and all).

I apologize for your frustration, but we see these kinds of giveaways as opportunities for us to spread the word about AllMusic in a very viral way, and hopefully get more users to our site to keep the site going (as well as hooking up our users with some cool freebies).

I hope this helps explain our position a bit.

Yeah, it explains it but it *doesn't* excuse it. By doing this you alienate a large portion of your user base who refuses to use such marketing sites. And say what you will... Facebook, Twitter, etc. are *nothing* but marketing,

I don't like the fact that contests can only be entered via social networking sites! Why not by email? First Blur, then Roxy Music, and NOW "Document!" You guys are killing me.
