Why is The Downward Spiral by NIN not 5 stars. Many regard it as their masterpiece, surely it should now be rated 5 stars.

Define many.
  • AllMusic's first review in 1995 by Steven Thomas Erlewine gave it 3 stars.
  • AllMusic's Steve Huey upped that to 4 stars in the early 2000s.
  • Robert Christgau gave it 2 stars.
  • ¬†Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars in their original 1997 review.
  • No NIN albums were worthy of being included in the 2004 printed Rolling Stone Record Guide (although 98 Degrees was).
  • The Virgin Record Guide review was 4 stars.
  • Pitchfork say 8.3 of 10 for the 2 disc deluxe edition.
  • MusicHound gave it 3 stars.
I see a trend here.  It may be their masterpiece, but it's not a 5 star record.  Can you cite some references to back up your claim?
