Blown Tweeters TS315 ALTO

Hi,
After 30 hours of playing , the tweeters on my TS315 speakers had blown out.I always used an Alto mixer and was constantly at -6dB volume while my speakers were at 10 o clock gain at the back.
Where can i buy a pair of tweeters in Europe ?(No music shop in Romania has tweeters for ts3 series ) Can you tell me why the tweeters blew so fast ? How can i prevent blowing them again ? What tweeters can i use that sound similar to ts315 tweeters ?
Thanks...

Blown tweeters has been a big problem with these speakers. They sound really, really great until the tweeter goes out. If you can return them do so, before the warranty runs out. They have upgraded to a better model in terms of specs. But with the ongoing tweeter problem I'm afraid to try them.

  • Hello,

Sorry you're having issues with your TS315 speakers.

If you're located in Europe, you will need to connect with your international distributor to purchase new tweeters or arrange for service. You can locate your international distributor at www.altoproaudio.com/dealers

  • Sorry to hear your troubles, I spoke to 'Blue Aran' a supplier of these tweeters and they are continually sending these out at £45 each, I personally wouldn't buy the originals, go for a higher powered alternative, mind you having been in the sound business for over 40 years I never heard of a horn tweeter capable of taking 350 watts RMS, no wonder they fry, just look at size of the driver its tiny and must be very inefficient to need 350 watts fed into them when playing moderately loud, usually a 80 watt tweeter would be more than adequate like the Eminence PSD2002S (£65) and will sound just as loud being its more efficient, but then you would need to attenuate it by fitting say a 50 watt 10 ohm resister in series, this is something a good audio guy would experiment with in his workshop, alternatively keep buying the original @ £45. Don't forget you get what you pay for, if you bought a top of the range 15" active speaker such as FBT you will pay between £550 up to £1350 each but it will last for ever as it will have built in limiters with more expensive drivers and sound a lot louder, simples.

  • Good grief that is a ridiculous price, as you say turn the treble down a tad more.

  • Blown Tweeters, got some replacements and it still blown, out of research and testing I notice the tweeter get hot even if the volume is zero and has no input. I voltage checked the Hi-Amp output to the tweeter is 3.3VAC at zero volume while the Lo-Amp is 0.007VAC. I guess there is something wrong with the Hi-Amp.

  • If it still under warrantee take it back and pay a bit extra and go for the RCF 15" version. If its out of warrantee, mention that its not fit for purpose, I bought it because it was advertised as Alto Professional so I assuming that is what it supposed to be, its your right under the consumer protection regulation.

  • I have two brand new TS312 speakers. Both tweeters hiss when the volume is zero.

  • I have the same problem, mine are all but useless. horns an both are dead. I went to the web site and sent info in for warranty status and no response. These have less then 25 hours of play, they are not even broke in yet.

  • i bought eight units of these.

i didn't know they had tweeter burning issues. Four of them got blown in one tour first time used, wihile my other less known speakers did not..

    very expensive to replace.

is there a way i can protect them aside from lowering the gain?

  • This is common fault even with the TS215, allowing 200 watts fed into these tweeters does not make sense, I have modified all 4 of my friends TS215 to update the 15" driver to a Eminence KAPPA-15LFA what a difference over twice the efficiency, he will want to update the tweeters at some stage when they blow, but looking at the so called compression driver used in these 2 way 15" cabs they are tiny compared with most compression drivers on the market most of which are rated at a maximum of 75 - 100 watts but they are more efficient and larger even with Neodymium magnets which maybe difficult to retro fit but will cost a lot more, so unfortunately you do get what you pay for, the cabinets look good and are good value for your buck, just keep the treble down a tad and don't RED light them.

  • I think Alto have come up with a compromise of using a lightweight budget HF unit requiring 200 watts to keep the weight down where a more expensive compression driver normally heavier and having the same or higher SPL (sound pressure level) running with only a 100 watts, usually the dearer the driver the longer it will last, then re-designing the LF amp with more power for the bass driver. i.e. 100 watts HF and 900 watts LF, the trouble is the 15" driver will also cost more with a larger magnet, the 15" driver used in the TS215 only costs £60 whereas Eminence Omega Pro 15 is £183, Precision Devices PD.1550 is £218 but over twice as loud, If Alto used these then its obvious the cabinet will reflect that price difference, having said that Alto are still good value for your money.

    • The built-in limiter limits too late. When the mixer sending 1.4V RMS not distorted, the limiter not kick in and the woofer smells. Do you have any information about the amplifier chip?
    • I have in my park 8 Alto TS110A and 4 Alto TS112A which are used every weekend for 5 years without any problem. I started having problems with Alto TS212. I had bought 5 and the tweeters have grilled on the 5 two times in a row. I have replaced by TS312 and TS310 and the problem persists while the use is the same. So it is a problem of design and strangely the time is nowadays exceptionally long to get spare parts in France.

  • Hello, I have the same problem with my speakers. I have 6 speakers Alto TS310 and 4 TS312 and the tweeters have all dropped on each speaker since I bought them. obliged to replace them at my expense, the worst is that the replacement parts also loose, still a pair this weekend.

    Phil and all,

Thanks for your advice. I was considering purchasing a pair of TS315s but I will now look elsewhere. There appears to be a definite design fault with these units. Alto need to respond publicly and clearly. Maybe even recall existing units?

    Thanks again,

    Paul.

  • I have been on the Alto help desk if you could call it that for a number of years, and the amount of owners of the TS215 & 315's with blown tweeters is overwhelming, for what I can tell is the driver is probably ok for a smaller output power cabinet, but to design a cabinet at maximum power of 650 watts for the woofer and 350 watts for the tweeter is just not known in the P.A. industry, I use Electro-Voice DH1A compression drivers (each weigh 11.5 kilo's) and they are rated at 50 watts max from 500Hz to 20Khz and 75 watts from 1kHz to 15kHz, fitted to a horn has a SPL of 115dB with just 1 watt so at 50 watts it will be equivalent of 10 Alto tweeters, apart from the weight the cost was over £400 10 years ago, a replaceable diaphragm is £175 ok fair enough they are at the Pro end of the market where Alto would never use, but on the other hand there are manufacturers that have small, light and fairly sensitive compression drivers that fit the horn in the cabinet that run to a maximum of say a 100 watts, I just don't have the time to look around but I'm sure JBL has a driver that will work, I have replaced many woofers to a much more expensive driver and the results are amazing over double the SPL (sound pressure level) for the same volume setting, but at a cost, Alto £60 Eminence Kappa Pro15 £160 or the cheaper Delta-15LFA £105
