I’m a Believer

Forget Technology Just Listen and You and Become a Believer

The Alto Trouper in my opinion most underrated Alto speaker. Put on on top of a 12 inch sub and an 18 inch sub that are powered in a club that holds about 100 people.
Let's just say this speaker is more than just for the solo acts. With the Alto trouper at 1/2 volume keeps up with the subs. The beauty is that this configuration sounds better than the PA's that the bands paid over $15K. And lets just say flexibility just took a whole new meaning with what you can daisy chain. Outside we have the out door areas and bars that host 3 more Alto Troupers. I personally own 5 myself for my personal needs. Having been in the music business I have had multiple PA's that cost 10 times of what I have now and didn't produce the quality of sound that the systems I am using now. The vocal quality and range of the Trouper cabinet is amazing and once you sing through it you will throw all your other speakers in the can. Trouper get 5-Star Rating.

  • Sorry my friend but I can not believe that a Trouper on top of a 12" and a 18" sub will sound better than a $15,000 PA system, so you are telling the nation that the Trouper that has three 6.5" midrange speakers and one tweeter is going to sound better than a professional PA system in a club, I would suggest that if anything most DJ's may use the trouper as monitors only, unless you are using these in a church or in your lounge at home, there is one thing that I will say they look good but they are made for a price and are good value for your money, I will stick with my system, 21" sub, 19" bass, twin 10" mids, twin compression drivers (4 way system) each side and does sound pretty good, and its about the price you mentioned.

  • I would suggest that you set a Trouper next to Mackie, QSC, JBL, and any other more expensive big boy cabinet like I did next to each other at Guitar Center which reps all the brands and have them demo. I can say the this little speaker almost kept up with 2000 watt Alto Speaker. The main sound engineer couldn't believe that this speaker actually sounded better. Keep in mind the club only holds 100 people and I am sure that if it was outside are a larger venue my opinion of these speakers could be altered. All subs are powered which means they have less throw than yours.
But my stack is less than $1000 dollars per side. Interesting that Guitar Center is an Alto dealer but never heard the Trouper or demoed one. Summing my opion up I never expected the sound out of this small speaker but its there. I can see that you have probably at least $15,000.00 invested in your system. My system has less than $2000.00 and sounds great in the small club venue on top of the subs.
I will concede that with only 200 watts that the Trouper cabinet output will drop off at about 100 feet but less than a 100 feet would most likely sound ever bit as good as your system. I am also sure that the Trouper cabinet is tuned and processed for this amazing results which shows the capabilities of the Alto Brand. Find a Trouper and put it to the test you will walk away amazed like I was, and for the $ investment that is truly the amazing feature.

  • You do realise that 6.5" drivers are designed for midrange, so perfect for guitar which is the critical frequency range our human hearing is more sensitive to, so it may sound loud but when you have a balanced sound throughout the musical range say 30Hz to 18KHz you would split the distribution of power approx 75% for the bass range, 15% for the midrange leaving 10% for the higher frequencies, so to have a descent amount of bass frequencies using the full output of your Trouper cabinet which they claim is 200 watts peak (which is only 100watts RMS), then you would need no less than 750 watts for the bass end, which you mentioned on your first post using 2 subs, I read the specification which states that it only has a maximum SPL of 117dB @ 1 meter, which isn't great, every time you double the distance you will loose 3dB so at a 100ft (30 meters) it will be 15dB down or to have the same SPL at 30 metres you will need 6 of these cabinets, whereas JBL shows a maximum SPL of 127dB, a massive difference. I would say that the sound engineer at the Guitar Centre didn't turn the power up enough on the Mackie, QSC or the JBL and knew he could easily sell you the cheaper gear. All I can say that you will be buying tweeters and other speakers on a regular basis to replace the cheaper units fitted in the Alto cabinets if you drive the system hard.
One of the reasons why I'm on these threads is to help those with troubles and 50% of the calls are those with burnt out tweeters. BTW I made a typo error its 18" bass not 19" sorry for that. The two 21" subs are driven with a 1,000 watt RMS per channel amp via an Active crossover and the driver on its own weighs 33Kgs made by Precision Devices here in the UK (PD2150) and costs £560 look it up, the Sub Cabinet weighs 85Kgs and you would have to have 4 Alto 18" subs to equal just one of these Cabs, even the 18" Bass cabinets fitted with a PD184 would need two Alto 18" subs to equal the SPL. PD drivers are fitted in top rated PA cabinets and not fitted in run of the mill store cabinets as this will push the price well over what the average person wants to pay, but the good thing is you won't need to replace them for a long time as they are built to a high spec costing 3 to 4 times the price of the speakers used in Alto cabs, I know this as I have upgraded many of the TS range especially the tweeters which they call compression drivers, have you seen them. they are an excuse for one, the reason they are small and light is because they are fitted to a cheaply made lightweight horn, a properly designed efficient compression horn would cost as much as the whole cabinet and would weigh a lot more, which is where the makers win, if its easy to lift and the specs show inflated power figures people will believe and buy. Most quality bands and disco's would never by Alto, but having said that its very good value for your Buck.

  • I agree with everything you say I will soon have pictures of the club which host 8 of the troupers. Your right the subs pull the bottom and the Troupers vocals and highs.
The test at Guitar Center was as loud as he comfortability do with out running everyone out the door. I never expected these speakers to do what we are but they are. It's amazing that the 130 watts will keep up with Mackies, JBL's, QSC and actually sound better. The engineer hammered all the speakers because he could not believe his ears. Currently we are doing an outdoor stage. This club is located near a neighbor hood and always had noise complaints about the music being too loud. Amazingly enough the output of speakers drop off and dissipates at the fence line will every is complaining that it's too loud. While I understand what you say above and it does have its place the cost savings are impressive and if you actually blow one you buy another. The sound quality of this is amazing match up and I can't explain. The fact that the column is mixing together 5 ft off the stage and is chest thumping bass and crystal clear mids and highs with no distinguishing separation due to cycle sound waves. This change my whole approach and prospective. But remember the club is a small venue probably less than a 1000 square feet the side walls on one side open to patio area. Guitar Center does not stock the Trouper
because they wouldn't be able to sell the high price columns the do stock. At least in Texas I haven't seen any in any store. I have to order from Amazon. If you ever get the chance or just for fun if you come across one at a store tell them to demo a couple of subs and Trouper and you will be scratching your head just like me.

  • This may be a unique coincident of some sort that is defying all the physics. If someone else told me that I would feel better about it. We had 15 bands over the last couple of weeks that range from country, blues, metal, and rock which they all commented the same thing and couldn't believe their ears. So its not that I am arguing and debating your points I just can't explain what I am hearing. It's always been more watts and money to get the quality of sound. I have a trailer full of speakers, subs, and amps. If I need more I roll the trailer, but so far since the first of the year it hasn't moved. I am not preaching that this is the replacement for big PA's just that a small venue club this is an amazing application. Find one of these and turn it up and stand back and listen that is all I can say. Yes we are using these in a way they are probably not designed for but we haven't blown one component yet.

  • Sounds like it suites your venue, all you have to do now is put all of your other gear including your trailer on Ebay then buy your partner an Easter present with the proceeds. Good luck.

  • My sentiments exactly. Just for fun if you ever get the chance put Trouper to the test. My next big experiment is the outside stage are which has a unusual shape and still the longest distance is about 50 feet. Thinking about 2 of these on the sub stack which might work and might not. Believe me I am trying to find an application at the club which doesn't work with these.
