Mixer - IEM - Cables

Hi,

I have the ZMX122FX Alto mixer. I also use the IEM 75 Tbone with in ear buds,, so I can hear myself on stage. I connect the laptop in through channel 7 for the backing music. I connect my sax microphone into one of the main channels. And then I use the main mix to connect the mixer to my Alto speakers.

What I’d like to know is - is it better to use the AUX SEND to go to the IEM or the CTRL room outputs to IEM?
What’s the difference between the CTRL room and aux send and which is better?

If the AUX send is better, then is it a single cable out from the AUX send or is it a double Y shaped cable? I can’t figure out if you should use one or two pins for AUX send.

The back of my IEM has 2 pin connectors - one labelled LEFT AF INPUT and the RIGHT AF INPUT. There is also a mono / stereo switch for selection of either.
In which scenario would I select mono or stereo?
Does it depend if I’m using AUX SEND or CTRL ROOM?

I want to have the best possible sound going to my IEM and want to make sure I’m using the mixer correctly.

I can purchase new cables if necessary, so please can you specify exactly what cables are best.

I’ve also got a behringer UMC22 which I’ve been using for recording at home. Would this audio interface be of any use in a live situation in terms of upgrading the sound quality of my current live setup.

I’ve also been looking at upgrading to the live802 Alto mixer - for the benefit of USB recording, compression and a larger selection of effects ( than the ZMX122FX has ) - having read everything, do you know how else the live802 might benefit my sound?

Many thanks
Jen

  • Hi Jennifer,

    Thanks for posting.

If you'll be using in-ear monitors, I would suggest having these connected through the AUX Send, as these ports are specifically designed for use with monitoring systems. You will only need to use a Y-cable if you will be working with effects as well. The control outputs can be used if additional monitoring is necessary.

Since I am not familiar with this product, you would need to contact the manufacturer of the monitoring system for more information on how to properly configure this. Your audio interface will not affect the sound being emitted in a live situation. This would only be necessary if you are planning to record directly to a computer. Unless you need the additional effects that are included on the ZMX mixer, it is not necessary to use both with your setup.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Bill

Thanks very much for your reply. I was expecting to get a notification and didn’t, so apologies for my late response.

Yes I do use the effects on the alto mixer. So therefore I need a Y cable going from AUX send - going to the in ear box - again Y at that end for left and right... does that sound correct?
Would this cable be suitable? See photo

And if I’ve understood you correctly, the ONLY use for the audio interface would be for recording... no other use?

    Thanks again for your advice
