Anyone looking to develop a Pebble watch app?

I got rid of my Nest and replaced it with an ecobee3: very happy with this decision. But I would love to have an ecobee3 Pebble app like "Leaf" for the Nest. I don't want to spend $500 on an apple watch to get this feature.

So, is anyone actively trying to develop a Pebble app? I just might give it a try myself.

  • If you were interested in installing and running the free, open source openHAB on some computer, you could add in the Ecobee binding, and use the Pebble app for openHAB. openHAB and the Pebble app can also monitor and control most everything else in the smart home as well.

  • Thanks for the tip! I am unable to get it to work though. I followed all the directions but I can't get a token. Keep getting 401 Unauthorized (I even registered a new application and put my own API key in the openhab.cfg file) and updated my ecobee.items file with my Thermostat ID.

  • The problem must have something to do with the values for ecobee:appkey= and ecobee:scope= in your openhag.cfg file (usually found in /etc/openhab/configurations). Both need to be uncommented (no # character at beginning of line in text file) and set to valid values. Set

    ecobee:scope=smartWrite

    Set

    ecobee:appkey=thelongalphanumericvaluefromyourapp

    You can see everything that is happening by turning on TRACE logging in your logback.xml file (usually found in /etc/openhab). Add this line to a place where similar lines are:

    <logger name="org.openhab.binding.ecobee" level="TRACE" />

    This will cause the binding to start dumping verbose messages into openhab.log (which is usually found in /var/log/openhab). You can later change TRACE to INFO to get it back to default behavior, or just remove the line.

    Please report back if any of this advice helps, and thanks.

  • Thanks for the help, I think I found my issue. I was using the key from THIS website, not from my ecobee portal. I have since signed up as a developer and added an app. Trying that key now. Not quite working, but I'm almost there.

  • Great! Also, make sure you use the "Ecobee PIN" authorization type, not the "authorization code" type!

  • I was still having some major problems with expired auth etc. But then I realized I was running openHAB 1.7.0 which has this exact bug. Had to delete the token from my registry.

    I have now downloaded a 1.8.0 snapshot and will see how this improves. So far, it's still a fail :D
