Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) error on API call

The documentation seems to suggest that the thermostat data can be queried with json requests to the ecobee servers. I am however getting the error below on all requests. Am I doing something incorrect?

No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource
