ecobee3 sensons as HomeKit triggers

Hey guys. Is there any plans on adding the ecobee3's occupancy sensors as automation triggers in HomeKit? I'd love you add a sensor per area in my apartment have them trigger HomeKit scenes per occupancy value.

i.e.: is there people in the living room? then get lights, temperature, etc.; is there people at home? yes: set the "I'm home" home kit scene, no: set it to away.

Unfortunately the auto-away functionality doesn't work for me since I use HomeKit Scenes from my Home app with set the thermostat to a hold state. Also, there is added value to the sensors if one could play with room's occupancy as triggers.

  • Same question. I've seen it attempt to do that. First time I got iOS 10 running with the home app and added my ecobee my three external sensors appeared as separate items, although they were stuck showing in one room together, changing one moved all of them to the room I changed the one to. So not very useful, but gave me a taste of the possibilities.

And not just occupancy info but temperature info as well, which may be useful in the future, as the ecobee only controls central heat in my home... but if I could use them to control window AC units. Even basic ones, with a homekit outlet controller. or window fans to keep from making the kids rooms too cold at night or sucking in hot outside air when the room is cooler than the outside temperature . Lots of possibilities.

I have noticed that Apple Home Kit trumps ALL of the motion sensors on the remotes and the thermostat itself. I can be standing in front of the main thermostat and it will stay on the AWAY setting. I have been told that Apple Home Kit doesnt allow for the Smart Home/Away motion to work, is that the case and if so why do allow that? I need to have the remote sensors trigger that I am at home or my kids are playing in their bedrooms.

  • Now that HomeKit sees the sensors at the individual level for temp and motion, has anyone figured out how to use them to trigger scenes or individual devices?

You might want download the eve app. It lets you do what you trying to do.
    • You can set conditional triggers right now, but not with the built in IOS Home app. You can use The Elgato Eve app, the Hesperus app, the Home app by Matthia Hochgatterer, and a few others.

  • I'm in the same boat. I have a family of 5 and were trying to get this to work. I would like the sensor or the thermostat itself to change the away hold to resume schedule when it detects that people are in the house.

  • This seems to work fine. I haven't actually tested it in operation. but the Home - Smart Home Automation app seems to allow triggers to use the "Motion Detected" event on remote sensors.
