Add favicons to Safari bookmarks bar

  • Idea
  • Updated 2 years ago
It would be great if we could add favicons to the Safari bookmarks bar. I have many sites I could identify just by an icon and save space on my bookmarks bar. It's hard to find stuff when it's all the same gray text.

Ideally we could edit the favicons also for sites that don't have them and to bypass the continual performance problems with the favicon database.

Sometimes it's okay for things to be a little messy

Especially if we would like to opt-in for it to be that way.

i agree, it's really hard to find a bookmark on the bar, when it's all the same text, it blends in together. Recognizing an image is way faster.

One 'hack' i just did to help, was to create fake 'separators' with the | (pipe) character, by creating a bookmark with the address javascript:0;

I have created a quazi-solution to this Problem! I inserted icon bookmarks above an embedded browseable area. Check out the site at http://googlext.com (not owned by Google) I want the next version of this site to allow users to insert custom bookmarks/icons. Gotta pull the Cold Fusion manual off of the shelf for that one, though. That will be coming as soon as I can find the time to build it!

Cheers,

Safari and its favicon problem has been driving me nuts for years. I particularly like how Safari gets a death grip on a favicon, or a generic favicon replacement globe thingie and then won't won't won't won't refresh. Ever. And your only option is delete the entire favicon database. What kind of option is that? It's all very non Mac.

Would condense my bookmarks bar enormously.

I just give every bookmark bar item a two letter name, works pretty well.

Also using folders with auto-click enabled helps a ton.

If you still want something more graphical check out Apple's built in Character Viewer, to find text-images you can use: symbols, arrows, suns, moons and tons of other things.

I guess it's a visual thing some people do not understand. I am sure your solution works great for you though :)

I will continue using Firefox until Apple will be able to solve something as simple as this issue. It's simply unacceptable from Apple.

It also bugs me. Every other browser has them including Camino .
There should be no excuses from them that don't want them, whether you like them or not users should have a choice ..

I agree with the idea of almost all the users of Safari
Is incredible how Apple didn't improve yet Safari. Favicons were created to simplify navigation and decrease searching time...
I will continue using Firefox as well..

There's a partial work-around: use special characters from the character viewer as icons. :p

totally agree with you, guys! I just downloaded safari and it wouldn't even import bookmarks that have no names!
this browser looks pretty cool especially the top sites section, but the bookmarks thing is a total deal breaker! (this and the lack of a + button for a new tab)

Actually there is a new tab button, it's just not part of the default configuration.

Under the view menu (or the equivalent on a PC) there is a customize toolbar option where you can add the tab button.

actually this is the only deal-breaker to go back to safari
if safari was open sourced this would be a matter of 2 days or so to have this functionality

I added system characters to my bookmarks (✩, ✎, etc)... it works pretty well. Gives bookmarks SOME visual separation. You can find them in your character mapper. There are lots to choose from.

Also for me the reason I never use Safari on Mac. Favicons in the Bookmarks bar is a must. It is the reason favicons exist in the first place. Favicons give the user a quick visual clue for the website he is looking for, which is much user-friendlier than just text. I thought and still think Apple is all about user-friendliness. I hope they soon find out that just "design" without user-friendliness will NOT bring them success. Luckily there are many other browsers on the Mac.
