Has anybody had problems with their "Magsafe" power adapter?

I have a MacBook Pro just a little over a year old now. The Magsafe adapter charges my MBP fine but the usual set of lights are "green" when full and "orange" when charging. However, since about 5 weeks ago my power adapter turns from orange to black(off) or from green to black. Almost as if the Magsafe was never plugged in. I cleaned out the Magsafe connector and tried it again and it still does the same thing.
The main reason why I am asking if anybody has the same problem is because the Magsafe is not covered under the APP plan. If there are a few people with the same problem then this could be a faulty Magsafe issue and could be covered under the APPs extended warranty.

Sadly I think you're having the same problem I had. It has nothing to do with the magsafe connector. It's actually the wires inside the sleeve shorting out. This is due to wear on the inner sleeve that eventually leads to a complete short.

My only suggestion is to go buy a new one. The new cords are much thicker.

If yours just started doing that and its less than 12 months old. You can get a new adapter (free) because it has a 1 year warranty. Take it to an Apple technician and they will mediate with Apple and get you a new one.

  • I’m puzzled
Alright, so I went to the Apple store and bitch about the Magsafe lights acting up. The Mac Genius said:
"I have no problem giving you a new power adapter, however the 2 prong plug piece is not covered by the warranty and if you want a new one it will be $10 plus tax."

I was wondering why in the world would Apple not cover a tinny plug piece and over charge a $10 fee for it. Then the Genius said:
" This plug is actually cracked and hence it could be your problem too..."

Now, I am really wondering the following, anybody who has had Mac portables for 4 or more years knows that the white PVC casing of the power plugs do crack from the heat (which can reach well over 100 degrees celsius). I have had 5 of them so far and every single one of them has shown signs of cracking after a while. I don't drop kick these things and I am sure you guys don't neither.(especially at $80-$90 each).

so, the warranty and APP do not cover the 2 little cord wrap wings or the 2 prong plug piece because they are the ones that people "break" the most often.

Thankfully, I do have 2 long power plug extensions and 1 extra plug piece. I walked out with the new power adapter. (Just for your information: the Apple "world travel" adapter kit is $39 and you get 6 pieces and a 1 year warranty, much better value than the $10)

I got home, unpacked the new power adapter and plugged my MBP to test the unit. after 10 minutes I unplug the Magsafe...and...(drum roll)... The little light indicator in the Magsafe will not turn off (after the unit has been unplugged from the machine). So, I let it stay there to see if the light turns off... 2 minutes later the light finally goes off, HOWEVER, not completely it dims to a really low green...

This is a completely new smaller 85W power adapter for the MBP. Under theory it should light up only when it is connected to the computer and completely turn off when the machine has been unplugged ... I am giving it a week, if this keeps on going (I am so not going back to the Apple store) I am just calling Apple and get them to send me a new unit.

I did try cleaning the new Magsafe plug and pushing the pins in and out and the whole works and still does it... I mean, this is a new unit, you should not need to do this...

  • Another observation:
(a few months have gone by)

My Magsafe is still lighting up after I unplug it, like it did before (this is the second bad Magsafe, I get from Apple). I haven't had time to return to the Apple store to get an exchange.

My problem now is that my girlfriend's Battery is still at 90% after 460 charges While mine is at 49% after 465 charges...

    What the heck just happened??

I think this Magsafe problem is bigger than what it was before...

  • I've noticed this started with my (penryn) MBP, as well, except it's happened on two separate magsafe adapters (I have one in my office at home permanent and carry the other one with me). The charging indicator still shows on the menu bar, but the light on the adapter is dark.

Given that this is happening on two separate adapters, I'm thinking it's an issue (at least in my case) on the "female" end in the laptop itself. The wires there appear normal.

  • Update:

    The Magsafe went kaput...
One day I woke up and it smelled like fried plastic. I found that the Magsafe had ironed down my 2 inch thick carpet and left a square hole (the size of the unit).
I unplugged it and went down to the Apple store. I took the 9:30AM appointment , they don't open till 11AM (on Sunday) so there was only one Genius at the bar and 2 iPod specialists...

After waiting for 30 minutes ...
(cause the old lady in front of me with her brand new iMac couldn't figure out how to use a Mac after using windows for like 10 years... she needed genius help... blah, blah, blah... )
The iPod specialists decided to ask me what was wrong... so I explained and they gave me a new adapter...

This adapter seems to be 100% A+ ok!
Hopefully it won't crash and burn or set my room on fire...

The toasty Apple logo that was ironed into my carpet lasted for 4 days. Now it's gone...lol...

  • There is a recall on the MBP adapter. I bought a new one 6 months ago, saved the old one. Recall announced a few weeks ago, brought old one in to Pentagon City store and walked out with a replacement. So now I have two.

  • Hi! I just got my Macbook back from the dealer here in Norway and I had a similar problem. I was smelling burnt plastic for a while and one day I saw that insted of charging the battery it said not charging. I then checked the Magsafe adapter and it was melted on the (computerside) of the adapter. It was burning hot and then it sparked and the Macbook went dead. I went to a dealer and found out that the motherboard was fried and sent it to the dealer where I bought it. They changed the motherboard and stuff on the warranty and I also got a new Magsafe. So maybe there is a problem with these adapters, I'm not sure.

  • Keep your adapter block off of padded things that prevent heat dissipation. There is a new add-on called PowerCurl. It snaps on to the block and allows airflow all around. When not used, it allows neat wrapping of both power cords.
    Check it out here...

  • Mine is just charging intermittently. The light is a very dim green. I reset the PRAM and PMU to no avail. I think it may be the actual charger and not the battery that is fried, though there is no outward appearance of wear or tear. After fiddling with the cord, I can get the light to turn amber...

  • I’m frustrated
This is what is happening to mine. I bought a macbook pro off of eBay and I love it. It came with a Magsafe 85W power adapter from macbookadapter.com. The power adapter never really worked. I was able to get them to send me another one (supposedly new) and it had the same problem. I had no idea what was going on with it and thought that the outlet in my house wasn't supplying enough power. This same 85W worked with my friend's 13" macbook (mine is a 17").

I'm off to buy a brand new Magsafe 85W power adapter first thing in the morning from an Authorized Apple Dealer.

  • My adapter has to be wiggled to get it to charge..... I looked closely to find the 2 outside gold springloaded charging posts... no longer had any spring to them so they were stuck inside..... I hope the apple store will swap it out...

  • The lights on my magsafe have entirely stopped turning on, and therefore my computer does not charge....I used cotton buds and everything to clean the little L shaped thing but there was no effect. this is the second time it's happening, the first time, i took it to the apple store and they replaced it...this problem however is too frequent, i don't wanna be paying every six months for a new charger..

  • I'm having similar problems. This is the third time my 60W Magsafe Power Adapter has quit on me. The power charger is flickering from green to orange, then black to off when I move my computer, or even if I don't touch it. I've tried resetting the main battery of the computer laptop (2006 Macbook model) and no luck. And I've tried plugging in to different wall plug ins. It'll work for a little while, then flicker off. So it looks like it's time to dig for the receipt and go get a replacement. Not real thrilled with the magsafe brand of charger at this point. My laptop is running just fine, and everything's up to date too, even.

  • I got burned a few days ago by my power adapter. I called Apple to let them know. I have a burn on my arm that blistered and will probably scar. The adapter got so hot that it sizzled my skin. Apple made me pay for a new adapter $72 and said they would refund me when they received the old one back. They didn't seem to care that I got burned.

Don't know who's following this thread, but I think it might be time for some lawyers to jump in and start a class action law suit!

My daughter has had her macbook for about 18 months. I have to go get, yet again, another replacement power adapter, this will be the 2nd one!

They fray and split right where the white insulation meets the connector. It is a safety hazard as Jennifer above posts. It is also a fire hazard. The first time I noticed my daughters, it was laying on her carpet smoking. If we had gone off for the day and not noticed, no telling what would have happened!

I almost don't even care about the $80 a pop to replace, it really is the safety aspect of this that bothers me!

Apple has known about this since 2008, because you can find Recall notices on this very issue.

So it isn't clear to me why they haven't figured out the materials being used are either substandard, or under-engineered for the use of the product?!

  • Excuse me, there was a class action law suit!

    http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsui...

So, instead of giving free adaptors that are going to do the same thing in another 6 to 8 months, why don't they fix the problem?!!!!
