I’m frustrated and anxious.

I can't get Itunes to authorize my computer to play my purchased music...

I had to reinstall itunes 7 on my macbook... I can play my purchased music on my computer while using the itunes program... But I have put together some video projects using some of my itunes music in the background... and now when i try to play my video's i am told "this computer is not authorized to play this song..." I authorize, re-authorize, and re-authorize again, and it makes no difference. It won't play it... I'm putting together some new clips recently, and I'm not able to use any of the music that I purchased before the re-install... Every time It tells me to authorize, i put in my email addy and password and it says it works, but it doesn't... I am really worried and frustrated... I spent a lot of money on that music collection for it to just sit there and be useless...

Thanks Dan but I do have the latest software. Am still waiting to resolve. I seem to be going round in circles with iTunes as the last email I had I was told to look at the article mentioned at the head of this thread! I am considering invoicing them for the music I've bought and can't use if this matter is not resolved. It would be an interesting test case - might end up in the Small Claims Court!

After much to-ing and fro-ing, have finally resolved this, thanks to Karen, wherever she may be. I had the feeling my problems stemmed from changing my AOL ID to an Apple ID - I had purchased a lot of songs on the old AOL ID and this was not being recognised at all. At my request Karen cancelled my old Apple ID and allocated me a new one. I was also allowed to re download all the music from both the old AOL and new Apple ID's as a one-off concession (over 290 in all). The new ID seemed to help 'unlock' the unauthorized songs. Strange and I don't know if this was the case. Anyway it got resolved, much to my relief. I feel I've aged about 10 years! Apple don't make things easy do they but they have been helpful.

  • I just deleted my shared folder (there was nothing much in it) and then replaced it with a new shared folder and Hey Presto the tunes I payed Apple for actually work. I am out of the endless authorisation loop.

  • This is totally insane, but follow me here. I got this to work in my case:

I had four accounts with three that had ID's that no longer existed. Here is how I reconciled them:

When iTunes prompts you to enter your old ID and passcode for an apple ID that no longer exists, you will get that weird "This apple ID does not exist". At that point, click on the "forget password?" or whatever the button is to the right.

Then, instead of entering your info, click on the tiny blue link that says: "Forget your apple ID?" Click it.

At that point, it will ask you to enter your current e-mail, and up to 3 other accounts that you have had in the past, plus your first and last name. Once you enter this info, it will tell you that there are multiple e-mails linked to this ID; However, you need to lie when it asks you to choose your most current e-mail, because that is not what you are looking for! Pick one of the e-mails that is OLD. They should show up as radio buttons for each old e-mail address.

At that point, it will ask you if you want to have an e-mail sent to you at this address (that would be a NO since it doesn't exist!) or to answer a security question. Pick the security question. Then you reset your passcode. I would reset it to whatever you current Apple ID's passcode is to make it easy to remember.

Go to iTunes, and play one of the songs from the old account whose passcode you just updated that wouldn't previously play. Using the old Apple ID linked to this song, enter the new password that you just reset. And this should work. All songs linked to that old account should now play.

i don't remember, but I think I had to repeat this process for each old e-mail account.

    Good luck.

  • I just upgraded PCs and having the same issue. I've tried EVERY suggestion in this thread and nothing's worked including the most recent suggestion by updating your Apple ID. My issue is the songs that wont play were DL'd under my AOL s/n. I still have that account but in the last 3 yrs I've been logging in with an Apple ID. I've never have changed my password for the AOL s/n but it won't accept that password when trying to authorize the computer.

I've sent an email out to Apple hoping it doesn't take too long.. this is BS..

Ugh!!! It was telling me to authorize with a different email that I actually bought them with!! I finally authorized with my current email, not my ID, and now it works! so glad because I would have had to use my "one phone call" to apple support for my new $300 ipod touch on this!! Chris's reply above helped me figure out all the ID's I had.

  • I’m frustrated, confused
Tried Chris's method. BUT I've only ever had one "AOL ID" (old) and one "APPLE ID", which is my current email. Never got to the point where it says "there are multiple emails..." because there really aren't. They're talking about APPLE ID's on that screen. I even went further and reset the password (it forced to my current/only email).

Still get "This comp is not authorized to play... would you like to authorize it?" popping up with my OLD AOL ID prefilled. Can't get in there to save my life. Went on AOL and signed in just to check that I have the right pw and I do. I've got 262 songs, 15 movies, 41 TV episodes and 10 audiobooks that are now useless.

QUESTION: If I was to delete the songs from the library and SYNC with my iPod would it bring the songs back in a useable state?

  • I’m thankful.
When it pops up to prompt you to enter the AOL account password, enter a wrong password a couple of times until it asks you to "Verify Identity." Select this option, then it should ask you a security question, answer it, then create a new account using a different email address. Click next, then, on the next page enter your credit card information (it won't charge the card). That should do it, your songs will play. This worked for us.

  • I'm getting a similar problem.

I wiped my computer (with songs saved elsewhere), and reinstalled itunes. I put all on the songs back on itunes and bought a couple more. However when I try to sync my songs across to my ipod it won't allow me because it says that i need to authorize the new songs I've bought for this computer. So I click authorize and it comes up with the apple id and password box. Although it has automatically put the email "b-rovers@hotmail.co.uk" which I've never seen in my life. So I put mine in instead and password then authorized it. When I do it says I have already authorized the computer (I assume this is because I wiped it then reinstalled it). Then I click ok and it says it could not be authorized again and to go into "store>authorize this computer" to authorize the songs... I tried this but couldn't find it anywhere, and besides, it would probably just tell me the computer is already authorized again... would be grateful for any help...
