I can't get my music to sync to my iPhone

  • Problem
  • Updated 5 months ago
I moved my iTunes library to an external disk. It turns out that gave me podcast syncing problems. Plus, I couldn't get my music to sync to my iPhone anymore. So, I moved my iTunes library back to my MacBook. But, I still can't get any music on my iPhone. I check on my iPhone for songs and it says "No Music". Ack.

I can select the playlists I want to sync, but iTunes won't actually put the music on my iPhone. But, podcasts and all that sync fine. What gives? I've never experienced this kind of problem, but I assume it has something to do with moving my iTunes library. Can anyone help me?

Have you tried to put your music in a playlist so it can be chosen from the Music list? This is similar to what I have done on several shuffles. Hope this helps.

If that doesn't work email iTunes, they will put your purchased music back. You will have to reload CDs that you have put in your iTunes library.

Oh, yeah, I have a zillion playlists! The funny thing is -- and I just noticed this last night -- that all of my songs seem to be missing from my playlists! So, that appears to be part of the problem.

With my brand new iphone gs, and after having read an instruction set online, I plugged the iphone in to my computer's USB port. Up came iTunes and it started synching everything from email to calendars and contacts, BUT NO MUSIC. I reset the phone and tried again; same result.
Know the definition of insanity? I keep doing the same thing over and over and hope for a different result! Call me loco!!
I'm heading back to the AT&T store today!

I think I knoww what your problem is.
When your in Itunes and have your Iphone connected.

Go to the Iphone on the side of the Itunes and there will be catagorys click on music and click on the box that says "Sync music" I dont know why but when you update an Iphone it'll not have the box checked to Sync.

@NosheenBhalli If you are using the newest version of iTunes, the box has 'moved'. Click on (the name of) your device and notice about 1 inch from the top of the screen SUMMARY, INFO, APPS, RINGTONES, MUSIC, etc. Click on Music and that is where you need to select Sync Entire Music Library.

When you do that it erases everything you already have on the iphone and replaces it. so not a good idea to do if you don't want your music erased.

I had the same problem, but the "Sync Music" box was checked, so that wasn't my issue. I discovered, however, that the individual songs in my Playlists had been "unchecked" (there is a little checkbox to the left of each song). I checked all of these boxes and then re-synced. Voila! Finally ... success!

My 3GS suddenly stopped syncing my entire playlist after I changed it up a bit, and I spent a couple of hours fooling with it. The checkbox solution worked like a charm. All synced up now!

I had the same problem, and none of the solutions worked for me. After updating to 3.1.2, I installed Installous, and checked the "iTunes sync" option. That was stopping iTunes from removing the unauthorized software, but also stopping it from syncing.
So go to Installous on your iPhone, uncheck "iTunes sync" under Settings and sync your iPhone freely. Be aware that this action will remove any illegal software installed via Installous.

I hope this helps :)

I think a lot of you are having a simple problem--it isn't automatically putting music on your iphone. So here's how i would explain the steps to my mom:

In itunes, click on "device" (iphone symbol).
Then on the screen where it shows a summary of your space used and available, select the "music" tab.
Then you have to check the box to sync it with your current itunes library. I've been trying to keep my bought music on my iphone and just add my itunes library to it, but it won't do that.
So if you have purchased music you don't want to lose, you have to go back to that device menu and "transfer" purchased music (right click on the music symbol under device) to itunes. You'll see it's progress in the status bar at the top.
Then go back to the Sync Music? tab. It might tell you it is synced with another itunes library, erase it? Click yes, (because you've just saved that music to your computer)-- you can now check boxes to select what playlists, artists, purchased music, etc. to put on and leave off.
It'll say "backing up so-and-so's iphone" for a long while if you have my issue of a lot of apps. Just leave it plugged in and come back to it in a while.

I hope this helps one or two of you with your problem!

Hi, you have to re-add your music folder to itunes, see if there is an ! next to the songs, this means it was on an external drive that wasn't hooked up when you started itunes and so it marks them all offline.

I closed iTunes, plugged my external drive in, opened iTunes back up and then I was able to add my music. I'm glad this worked because I didn't want to delete all my music from my iTunes and phone just to re-add it...
Thank you...

I had the same problem. None of the above solutions worked for me. It was pretty weird...I had to basically go through and right click ea. song and choose "get info" for itunes to basically figure out that it was *actually* in my library and then index it. I think the indexing ends up crapping out from time to time....anyway, hope this helps someone.

email iTunes, they put all my purchased music back. I had back up disc, script and audio, but still couldn't get music, iTunes put my music back in less than 48 hours! Very nice about it also. I don't know how to link, but the website that gives you the phone number to call apple is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451. I hope you get fast results like I did!

I have the same problem too. however, this method will help you guy go through this problem easily.
1st. go to start, control panel, User Acc, create new user account, after you done with your new account, log off, and log on back to your new account (the one you created)
2nd. open itunes, click on your device, click on music, CHECK on Music, then apply then sync. after you've done, itunes won't let you add any music to your iphone/ipod.
3rd. log off and log on back to your first user account, this time open your itunes up again, click on your device, music, CHECK on Music, then apply then Sync, now it will sync your music to your iphone/ipod with no problem at all. hope this will help

Eric et. al. This is frustrating. I have an iPhone 3g (not 3GS). I've tried all suggestions to no avail. I sync'd my iPhone to my Macbook and all albums transferred to my Macbook but vanished from my iPhone. How do I get them all back on the iPhone? I want to listen to them on the bus. A definitive solution for this would be awesome!

I had this problem with a 3g, jailbroken with ios4 - all of my songs disappeared and regardless of my checking and unchecking of all options in itunes (playlists, etc.) no music would sync. The issue was very easy and kind of dumb. What I did was check the playlists I wanted to sync in the iphone itunes options, then go back to the main itunes library and check all of the music - on a mac it is command+click to click them all. Go back and sync and there it is - all of the music within the checked playlists sync. I guess the music in the playlists need to also be checked in the itunes library to actually sync. Strange, dumb and not surprising.

My i touch firmware is still 3.1.2, and it is jailbroken
Before, my i touch has apps and all my music, but no movies. But then I downloaded some movies and put it in itunes. When i synced to itunes, all my music suddenly were gone and the movies weren't synced too. Only my apps were left.
Then i tried to sync my music and movies again.
But then on, the music and movies won't sync on my i touch.
I tried all the ways, but it still doesn't work.

I have the same problem. I have had loads of issues since updating to OS4. The main one being the music on my phone. When connecting to Itunes, it starts to sync and then "an unknown error occurred 13019" and it stops. Now my phone has no music at all on it!! I have tried unticking, ticking boxes all over itunes, have tried every solution i can find but nothing has worked at all!!!! I'm so annoyed! What's more annoying is that when i go into my device on itunes, it shows that my phone has 7.36GB of audio in it....but actually there is no music on the phone whatsoever....

Please can someone help before i throw the whole lot out the window!!!

I had a similar problem & found a fix I didn't see.

PROBLEM:
After installing an update my music would not sync.

After trying to figure it out I noticed the the "Other" space on the phone had about 15gb of files in it... Which was the same size as the music files... Hmmmm...

So I figured dumb iTunes was just not seeing my files on the phone or unable to recognize them after the update.

I found this software, it is free & worked perfectly for me. http://www.digidna.net/products/diskaid
They do caution you when you go into the files about changing & deleting things.

I went through my files in the iTunes_Control folder & found one called "Music." I downloaded a backup of that folder to my computer. I looked inside & WHALLAH, there was the music!!!

I proceeded to delete the files & the "Music" folder from the phone, knowing I had a backup.

Once it was done I synced my phone again. It is working & it transferring music files as I am typing FINALLY.

I also think the music would not sync because with the 15gb of lost files & the 15gb of music I was trying to put back, it was going over the storage capacity of the phone with everything else on it.

Anyway, I hope this solution helps some other people!!!

I had similar issue with sync music from iTunes to iPhone 4. Music synced were shown under DEVICE/iPhone within iTunes window correctly, but nothing were shown in iPod within iPhone. In my case, I shut down ZoneAlarm security, the free firewall and then sync went correctly. Hope it is helpful.
