I never faced the error "iphone update server could not be contacted" before i did some minor changes to my network settings. I just managed to solve it by changing my network settings. The problem with my network setting was the proxy, maybe you have a certain network setting that cannot connect to the server.

I had jailbroken my phone and installed an shsh backup utility called tinyumbrella.
After fiddling around and doing some testing i found when contacting gs.apple.com it resolved to 127.0.0.1.

I checked the hosts file and tinyumbrella had inserted itself a line there.
Removing it resolved the error (obviously) and this allowed me to contact the correct address without error.

I went to the advanced settings under "Open Network Settings" on my Macbook. I had a socks proxy turned on. When I unchecked it, the restore button worked fine.

I'm running a PC and have MS Security Essentials v1.0.2498.0. I turned off "Real-time protection" (Settings tab/Real-time protection/UN-check the box that says "Turn on real-time protection"), clicked Save Changes, and the update worked fine. I re-enabled Real-time protection after the update. Best.

I wasn't warm to to idea that I have to download iTunes, which I'll never use, QuickTime, which I don't want and will never use just to update and use my iPhone (which is why I subsequently bought a Driod which I like a whole lot better). I also haven't been able to update my IOS, which is required for MobileMe iPhone's solution to what happens if you lose your iPhone. Here's my solution: #1 Get insurance and lose it in the Pacific Ocean. #2. .iloci2.com claims to have a similar service. We'll see about iloi2.com. In the meantime, buy a DRIOD. Apple sucks!!!
