my iphone won't sync to itunes

  • Question
  • Updated 8 months ago
I can't sync my iPhone to my mac laptop. This is new. I've done it before. Not only will iTunes not see the phone, but iSync won't either. It will be picked up by bluetooth, but I can't sync it that way. The cable does work to *charge* the iphone, but not to sync it. iPhone is v2, MacOSX 10.4, iTunes is 8.

There are a number of things that could be causing it, and an almost equally large number of solutions. Something from this list should work for you:

Thanks James. I worked through that already (rebooting everything, checking the cable, etc.)

The phone is not recognized by iTunes, and now I'm trying mobileme as a workaround and I can't log on -- have gone to iForgot, had info emailed to me, changed my password twice, etc.

I have a BRAND NEW iPhone with no podcasts loaded directly and am having the same issue. Can't synch! Just uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and still can't get to the iTunes store once I connect the phone. In fact, I can't get to the iTunes store when my phone isn't connected either. Leads me to believe it is an iTunes problem and not the phone?

If none of those worked for you, then your phone (probably the dock connector) may be defective. I recommend taking it to your nearest Apple Retail Store or authorized service center for repair or replacement.

As for your MobileMe troubles, if you still can't access your account after using iForgot, you may have to contact MobileMe via chat support. Go to the MobileMe support page and select "Account & Billing". At the bottom of the list, you should see "Still need help?" with a button to start your support chat. MobileMe chat support is available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Central Time, except on holidays.

try this

Connect your iPhone to PC
Then Open iTunes
Click "Store"
then Click "Authorize Computer"

This trick works for me... this Syncing Problems with iPhones and iPod Touch is very common to recently jailbroken iphones or ipod touch.

Hope this helps

I have been trawling the internet all day for a solution to this problem... I have tried everything suggested on the apple support page with no success. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410)

I have changed nothing on my phone - 2 things happened on my mac 1. I had turned on Genius and 2. my battery ran out and lost my itunes library...

Since then I have switched off genius - tried uninstall/reinstall older version, now back to current version of itunes etc

Any help out there, this is sooo frustrating!

Danielle, were you able to get it fixed? I'm in the same boat and I've tried every suggestion. The apple store told me I have water damage because she could see a dark spot, which I think is nuts because I never had any problems before a couple of days ago and my phone has not gotten wet. I really would love to update to 3.0.

Hi Michelle - I did get it fixed thanks to my mac tech savvy friend... he found something on a site called macosxhints (I think that's it).

In the end my issue was related to podcasts that I downloaded directly to the iphone. This created a glitch of some sort. Once we removed the podcasts then the iphone would be recognised in itunes and would sync.

It was still a bit flaky, ie it wouldn't sync automatically etc, so in the end we did a restore on the iphone as well. A bit of a nuisance but it's back to normal now and I have upgraded the software just yesterday with no dramas.

Now with podcasts, I download them on itunes (on the mac) and let them sync over to my iphone rather than doing it directly from the phone.

Hope that helps someone out there!

Thank you so much! This problem has been plaguing me for over 6 months- the "geniuses" at the Apple store had no clue and said it was issues with my computer's hardware. David, thanks for the tip on how to delete podcasts, I had no clue!

This works! I deleted all podcasts from iPhone and now it syncs. Apple should fix this. You should be able to download podcasts directly from phone as well without screwing things up.

Meaby you did that before, have you tried to power off both Computer and Phone ?

If you never did it for the phone hold on the power (on top of phone) for a few second until the red power off slider come up. Slide it to turn off the phone.

Then reboot your Mac and try again.

Good luck !

Yes, it turned out to be a bad install of iTunes, which surprises me because the same thing happened on both of my laptops. Something happened went wrong during the mobile device portion of the iTunes install the guy at the apple store said. What are the chances of this happening on both of my computers?! It's all fixed now, but man, that made for a stressful weekend.

Ok, I will fully admit that I am no technophile, but maybe someone else is an idiot like I am....if you try to sync your iphone with a cable from Belkin, make sure the cable isnt marked "Charge Only". I hope this helps someone else out there from trying in vain to figure this out...

Is your phone hacked? Have you tried restarting your computer and your iPhone? I have found that a majority of problems that happen with iPhone can be solved with a simple reset.

Danielle - thank you thank you thank you for that post. I was trying to sync my wife's iphone and had the exact same issue. Once I deleted her podcasts that she had downloaded directly to iPhone off the phone (by dragging my finger right to left across them), it synced just fine. I haven't seen another post anywhere on the internet with this information so you saved me TONS of time. Thanks again!

Danielle- Thank you! I had 2 old podcasts (the only ones I have ever downloaded) on my iMac. I deleted them, trashed them, and then restarted the iMac. Magically my iPhone 3GS synced JUST FINE after the reboot.
Thanks again!

I've got the same problem, although I've tried nearly everything I've read on this page and nothing has happened, I recently upgraded my OS to Vista from XP, I'm guessing this is probably the cause, any ideas? Maybe I have to download drivers for the iPhone that are compatible with Vista, I'm not sure but any help would be awesome right now, really annoyed I can't put the new CD's I bought this week onto my iPhone :( :(

I'm working from a PC....(yes I know) laptop, 64-bit windows 7, 500gb, 6mb memory, quad processesor ...so its not too shabby. Purchased iphone only to discover that 1) it required iTunes in the 64-bit version. No problem, downloaded, synched okay first time, not ever again without restoring. Message given was that "itunes can't read contents on iPhone". Tried different laptop, 32-bit but got same message. Went to AT&T store, tried new phone on my 64-bit laptop, same message. It was only when I went to Apple and they plugged my iPhone into their Mac laptop, it went through a registration process (which is what was supposed to happen at the time you purchase the phone and the activate it for your use) and it began to sync with itunes. I've had no problem since then. I'm ready for business now!

I had this problem, and was able to fix it this way:

1. Download new version of iTunes
2. Run the installer, click "customize" and uncheck iTunes but keep the "mobile device package" checked
3. After it completes, plug in my iPhone again

I wanted to say THANKS! I am a NPR/ podcast junkie and never thought that downloading directly to my iphone (instead of syncing) would be a problem. My itunes would have a pinwheel, not responding, not recognizing my iphone. I initially thought my iphoto, which recognized my iphone, had hijacked my iphone. It was difficult going through the itunes help section. Almost about to give up, I stumbled upon your question and Danielle's answer and deleted all my podcast downloads. It worked, THANKS AGAIN to all involved. I am new to macs in general, my iphone is the original version, and I am brand new to this site and grateful for the help--elizabeth
