Plug-in for Chrome not working

  • Problem
  • Updated 3 years ago
I installed the Awayfind plug-in (v0.6.5) for Firefox (3.6.3) and Chrome (5.0.375.38 Beta) on Win XP and allthough it works fine in Firefox I don't get to see any orange icon in Chrome Gmail messages. Any suggestions for solution? What I tried: refresh, quit/start. disabled all other extensions, gmail with no labs.

Doesn't work for me too. But I can see the icon - however nothing happens when I click on it.

Is it possible that you have the Sender Timezone option from Google Labs turned on? It seems to be the most common reason why the Chrome extension doesn't work reliably.

Let me know if that helps, and sorry for the inconvenience.

It worked. But would be nice if it could work with sender time zone enabled also...coz the timezone feature is very useful when you are communicating with ppl across the globe

Hey Jared, It solved the problem initially... or so it seemed. Then I actually tried to use it and the problem reverted back to the original manifestation... no orange arrow no nothing. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, with Gmail up, with Gmail gone, restarted Chrome, etc. Nothing brings back the arrow. Sender Timezone has been off since we last chatted.

Hi Jared. Thanks for your reply. Sorry to report Sender Time Zone is disabled already. I have many other Labs options turned on and did try the no labs escape hatch. I might try a different PC in time.

Can you let me know your AwayFind account user? That way I should be able to check if there's something wrong on our side.

Update: I went into my Google access settings and revoked all access for AwayFind (there were two). Reinstalled the Extension and it still does not work.

FYI... I have disabled all (2) other extensions (goog.le shortener and GoogleTalk). I've uninstalled and reinstalled AwayFind's Chrome extension. No joy.

I know this is a silly question, but are you certain that AwayFind is checking email for the particular account where you want the extension to display?

OK, maybe I'm the idiot... where on the site does it say that for the Chrome gmail extension to work, that AwayFind needs to be checking the gmail account? I completely missed it and feel really stupid. I connected my AwayFind account to my gmail account for login purposes, but had not had AF sniffing my gmail messages.... I've added my gmail account and will let you know how it goes.

Unfortunately AwayFind can't do any sort of routing with your email if it's not checking it, and most users get to the plugin on the step after they setup their gmail account...but outside of the product UI I don't think this is referenced explicitly. Thanks for mentioning that, and do let us know how it works...

Hi James, are you running any other extensions in Chrome? What operating system are you using? What's your account name? Could you send that and maybe even a screenshot of your Gmail opened with a message displayed to support@awayfind.com so we could take a close look at the issue? Thanks so much!

Hate to beat a dead horse, but could also let us know which other extensions you have running? You may also want to share your account name, but you can email that in if you'd prefer -- to support@awayfind.com.

Cheers!

Ah ha! Well, we can test all of those. But I'd bet you can find out faster than us which one is causing the conflict (by disabling all of them and then re-enabling each of them one at a time and seeing at what point AwayFind fails -- should take about 5 minutes).

If you can let us know we'll fix it faster. Otherwise, we will definitely address the conflict but it may be a couple weeks before we have an hour to replicate your environment before testing all the plugins. Thanks so much for all your help and patience.

When I disabled all the extensions, and all my google labs, it doesn't work. When I enable IE tab, and click IE tab a few times, it sometimes shows up. Then it disappears. None of the other extensions change anything.

Sorry it's not working for you, Benny

Just curious, when did this problem start occurring ? And what happens if you perform a hard refresh? (i.e., if you press Ctrl+Shift+R in Windows, Command+Shift+R in Mac)

Cheers

I only started using Chrome a few weeks ago, and only installed the plugin this past week.

A hard refresh does not change things, unfortunately.

Benny,

Thanks for taking the time to test. If you happen to have an installed version of Firefox, can you please give a try to its extension? Just to make sure it's not an isolated Chrome issue.

Thanks!
Sergio

The Firefox plugin seems to be working just fine. It seems that it is just Chrome, then.

We've got a few users with this issue. Something must be up in some versions of Gmail. We're trying to do some live video sessions with users to see what's up and debug. If you're interested, please pick a time at http://tungle.me/goralnick and I'll try and fit you in. Sorry about the trouble here!

PKJR,

Thanks for getting in touch, and I'm sorry it doesn't seem to be working for you.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, when the AwayFind Chrome extension is installed, you should see the orange AwayFind arrow on your emails. When you click it, a small options panel should open:

It sounds like you can see the orange button, but when you click on it, the options panel doesn't appear. Can you confirm that this is the case?

Thanks,
Dan
