I’m annoyed

Dismal color scheme, hard-to-scan headlines, poor flow

The color scheme is dismal and the modular layout "below the fold" makes it really hard to scan through the headlines in each section. My eye keeps getting stuck in each section because of all that space between each module. (Too much padding after the headlines and then those big gaps between sections). I feel like I have to scroll down way too much to take it all in. Additionally, there is a disconnect between the layout above the fold and below; the important information above the fold is on the left, but as you scroll down, the important stuff is on the right? Does not compute! Everything below the fold looks like advertising as a result.

Great feedback, Meredith. We will likely do some experimenting with the number of words and lines in the headlines so they scan better and fit with the overall design.

While the section modules shift to the right as you scroll down, as you pointed out, there's still plenty of interesting and useful (weather and traffic, for example) content on the left side, as well.
    • That's true, though my interest typically lies in the headlines - I'm not as interested in traffic or weather (though I'm sure other readers might be).

What worked best about the old design is that I could scan straight down from the top stories to the sections - my eye moving in one continuous line - and catch all of the headlines quickly. I don't know how easy this would be, but I think it would be a better reading experience if the sections were in a single container with more subtle dividers between each, and a more distinct "eye line".

And while I'm usually happy to see decluttered design, and think the tabs in the different sections work well to that end, they aren't as good for a quick information "fix". I could probably get used to that, though...

So, I think that making the flow more consistent would be the best improvement, along with the color. Looks like a dark, stormy day, and the news itself is gloomy enough these days - especially considering this is the Sun we're talking about! What if the header incorporated more of the gold accent color, rather than that dark gradient? I think even just changing the header would make a huge difference.

      Thanks for taking feedback! :)

Overall design is horrible. Color schema is very bad. Things run together and it is difficult to differentiate sections without good headers. I like the ambition to change the outdated layout, but it looks like some people really failed on the overall design. Cutting cost in IT?

Don't like the new design. The top screen looks really busy, and the new topic headers are hokey and don't make a lot of sense -- a Sports tab AND an Orioles tab? Bleh.

    Nick and Meredith:

Thanks for your comments. I am sorry you do not like the color scheme. I think the darker color at the top creates a serious look and presents opportunities for maximum visual contrast when we place white or lighter colored boxes on top of it.

One thing we can improve is on the story level pages where the top is too dark and our logo is getting cut off.

Also, we are looking for ways to better indicate to the user where they are on the site. It has been pointed out that if you go to a sub-level of a section (like the Ravens page within sports), there is no way to know where you are by what you are seeing in the top nav bar. We hope to address that too.

    Regards, Jay
